Difficult to tell, spending habits and consumer behavior are, in my opinion, rarely gender-based. Although I could most likely imagine that outside BN and a few other similar groups/communities/collectives etc. of fragrance enthusiasts (however not saying this from an "us vs them" viewpoint) men tend to generally spend less on fragrance and, in doing so, usually stick to a lifetime favorite and/or a popular bestseller.

    It's a very vague question.

I agree it is in general woman, most women I know like and buy cologne/perfume etc many of the men do not or they have only 1 or 2 things often gotten as gifts from female companions or female relatives. As to the women spend men's money - weeeellll, I DO hear a LOT of women say "I'll make my husband buy me that," or" I'll get my b/f to buy me that" especially if it is an expensive one - women do tend to buy themselves more though in the general public I think then men do. I tend to associate with the type of guys who wear nothing at all, or just maybe an aftershave like Cool Wave or Adidas Dynamic Pulse or AXE or Old Spice Body Sprays for the younger ones.

But women spend all their time in the kitchen and nursery, where chattel belongs. They have no time to shop with men's money.

Same here. And l also buy Mr teardrop's fragrances for him. He owns four bottles, l own over 50.

Why does it matter, anyway? Are you doing some kind of market research?

Basenotes started as a male perfume forum, the women's section came a long time after.

If you visit other forums they are mainly women as they started out as women's forums.

Yeah that totally doesn't happen in my world, but I don't doubt it does elsewhere. A lot depends on the country and culture. Lots of American men wear fragrance, but then there are also lots of American men who were raised to believe that any fragrance is a "girly" thing and to be avoided. And then there are countries where perfume is a matter of fact, just a part of getting dressed, for both men and women and nobody thinks twice about it. So it's hard to get a sense of the real numbers.

I would agree with what Zgb said, except that on this site, I'd guess it's probably equal.

I'd think that, among the average public, women spend more on fragrance. In my experience, the average guy owns a bottle of something like AdG or Light Blue, and that's what he wears on the occasions when he wears a fragrance, which isn't every day. The average woman, in my experience, owns a few bottles. The difference is that a woman is more likely to buy a new fragrance before she finishes a bottle, whereas the average man seems to only care when he runs out of whatever he occasionally wears. Again, I'm talking about the average guy, not the average frag head. Just the average guy.

Here's an interesting question that somebody on this site probably knows the answer to.

Which sells more each year: The top selling men's fragrance or the top selling women's fragrance? How great is the difference in terms of total sales each year?

There are actually many interesting gender questions. Which sells more, the top selling masculine niche perfume or the top selling feminine niche perfume, and how great is the difference in terms of total sales each year? And then, it'd be interesting to consider how many men buy the feminine niche for themselves to wear, and how many women buy the masculine niche for themselves to wear?

"Follow the money" is a common saying. It'd be interesting to do that and see where the money really is, in terms of gender. And then, throw in the stuff that's sold as unisex and see which genders purchase more of it. Interesting, interesting interesting...

I would venture to guess (in the U.S. at least) that women spend much more on fragrances...by a wide wide margin. I'm including body sprays into the general fragrance category, but either way I don't think it's even close.

Not sad at all, even though I usually do the opposite. I've got a really bad habit of spoiling people in my life. It's not a good thing to start. Everyone should provide for themselves, provided they're capable of doing so.

I'm working hard to rectify this in future ventures, but thus far have only been able to stay away from the oppisite sex, not stop wanting to make them happy. I blame the boobs.

From all the people I know I have come to think that both care equally little about perfumes. While it's true that most women own 1 or 2 bottles more than your average man would, I have yet to meet a freak like me.

Count the number of perfumes marketed towards women.

Count the number marketed towards men.
