D'oh! I'm so conflicted! I feel like it's my duty to make fun of the French... Napoleon riding a pineapple horse. My god, the jokes write themselves... and yet... so many of the best I've ever smelled are from France.

I'll take the risk of being banished to Elba. I have to go with France.
In my swap list: Gucci Pour Homme (2003) BNIB.
I'm looking for Reflection Man or Andy Warhol (silver bottle w/Andy's face)

Currently France but I am rooting for Italy because the Tiziana Terenzi line is quite nice. In addition, the Middle East region is way underrated.

I think France used to make the best fragrances, but today, well, there's plenty better, or at least totally competitive - Italy in the first place. And they've a dangerous and growing amount of rubbish (won't make any name...).

By the way Switzerland is missing there: don't underestimate them! They've Tauer, Ys Uzac and Vero Kern I mean that's still better than the entire Uk.
    My current top five:

    Etro - Vetiver
    Slumberhouse - Ore
    Parfum d'Empire - Cuir Ottoman
    Hermès - Equipage (vtg)
    Geo F Trumper - Curzon

    Historically? France.

    Today? France

Future? Possibly the USA, based on some trends I see. Long term, probably Africa or China more likely though.
    Seasonal favorites:

    1. Creed - Pure White Cologne
    2. Creed - Aventus
    3. Tom Ford - Grey Vetiver
    4.

    5. Clive Christian - 1872
    6. Montale - Aoud Legacy
    7. Xerjoff - Nio
    8. Neela Vermeire - Bombay Bling
    9. The Different Company - De Bachmakov
    10. Chanel - Allure Homme Edition Blanche

I don't think it has to do with culture anymore.

We live in a globalized economy. German automakers build cars in Mexico. "Japanese cars" are made in America. And lots of automakers purchase parts from all different kinds of the world. Yet we still have the conception that "European = luxury ; Japan = performance ; America = american jobs".

The same thing with fragrances I assume. Companies start up or move to France because people are more impressed by "French perfume" than "Italian perfume".

France has their historical reputation to protect. They are fairly concerned about maintaining that integrity. Just as Switzerland is fiercely protective of its reputation for making the best chocolate. If you want quality, you seek out the best and you can have confidence (generally) that your money is well-spent.

France easily, but closely followed by Great Britain, Italy and perhaps some of the German speaking countries (Germany, Austria and perhaps even Switzerland may have, apart from some very exclusive niche houses, also some potential with their designer segment).

As possible contenders, the Middle East and the US may bring just the needed amount of constructive competition, so that the fragrance industry regains more of its luster by becoming less focused on quantity and popularity and far more on the way more elusive pursuit of quality, exclusiveness, market ethics.

as for middle-eastern fragrances, there is definitely a cultural barrier. i'd assume that most of us are western and therefore we have more western interests. personally, i prefer cleaner scents and find lots of middle-eastern scents incensy and earthy.

SereneGreen - I think that might be a misconception regarding scents created by Middle Eastern regions. They also make scents with a Western interest in mind.

I disagree. I believe people are actually more interested and impressed by "something different" than "French (again)". Hence the fact that houses from other countries tend to "show" proudly their own heritage.

The thread is a query about where the majority of quality fragrance originate. Certainly there are unique exceptions world wide. France has probably been doing it longer than any body. The whole country is pretty much tuned in to the process and the infrastructure exists to facilitate top-notch product.

It's kind of akin to asking "Who makes the best baguettes in the world?".

Germs got some good stuff, but nothing I've tried that's really competing.

Spanish along same lines of German.

Seems like all the middle Eastern stuff is nothing but the ever obnoxious, loud oud.

But this is, of course, based only on what I've tried.

If I were strictly into oil perfumes I'd say Middle East since that's the smell I always lean towards. However I think they have yet to master alcohol based perfume.

So without a question, France. Especially when a perfumer has a the know how to create a middle eastern style perfume. Outstanding results!

Historically France... That said, nowadays, Italy appears to be where the more innovative action is at (at least to my tastes) and as such gets my vote.

    2) Giorgio for Men vintage (Giorgio Beverly Hills)
    3) Dia Man vintage edt (Amouage)
    4) Les Nombres d'Or Vetyver (Mona di Orio) - tie
    4) Lalfeorosa (O'driù) - tie

    6) Anat Fritz Original Formula and Classical (Anat Fritz)

    I'd say
1- France (they used to have no real contenders, but today they've to confront with a global world that has learned a lot from them)
2 - Italy (the contender with more interesting new brands: Maria Candida Gentile, Acampora, Eau d'Italie, Xerjoff, Nobile 1942, Meo Fusciuni, Antonio Alessandria and so many other new brands launching every other month...)

I'd put also Northern Countries on the map: Maack, Byredo, Agonist and others are offering really interesting things!

The italian Giovanni Maria Farina was probably the eau de cologne inventor. France is the historical country of the perfumes but nowadays in Italy are growing up dozens of great great artisanal brands and genial noses. Italy is also the country house of historical perfumes maison worldwide famous as Farmacia SS Annunziata, Santa Maria Novella, Officina De' Tornabuoni, Acqua di Parma, Acqua di Biella. At the end of 800 the french discovered the synthetic usage in perfumery and going ahead they invented in the 900 a real perfumes industry. Nowadays France is still the country of the perfumes but Italy is a great great contender with an enormous amount of qualified brands as Villoresi, Tonatto, Maria Candida Gentile, Hilde Soliani, Tiziana Terenzi, Goti, Profumo (AbdesSalaam Attar), O.P.S.O, Il Profvmo, Meo Fusciuni, Profumum Roma, Mazzolari, and the modern Nu_be, Testa Maura, Profumi del Forte, O'Driu', Nobile 1942, Nasomatto, Masque Milano, Casamorati-Xerjoff, Orto Parisi (even if probably a laboratory is located in Amsterdam), Mendittorosa, Eau d'Italie, Cale' Fragranze d'Autore, Bruno Acampora, Acqua di Stresa and many others.

Italy has some of my favorite fragrances I am discovering.

France is historically the home of the traditions, and I love the old school houses there as well as new ones like Annick Goutal.

But the Middle East fascinates me the most, as I have loved the attars and Amouage fragrances I have sampled.

You have to define 'makes' though to really assess it. Are we talking about the location of the house selling it, the fragrance house who made the perfume, or th location of the perfumer within that house? How do you classify an american house (tom ford) selling fragrances made by a Swiss company (givaudan) whose perfumer that won the brief is based in singapore?
