Carnation, Woods, Geranium, and Incense sound cold and lonely, I like that.

Does anyone know if "L'INCENDIAIRE" will be available only in 50ml or will there also be a larger size? Preliminary indications from the pictures I've seen online of the bottle suggests it might be released in a comparable size as the 100ml L'Eau Froide.

Tested L'Orpheline at Harrods recently (thanks to the SA) -- just a tester available, no actual stock

    It smelt gorgeous

An incense scent right? Could you describe it?

^^^ I'll try. Was a clear liquid. It smelt quite fruity up top, but fresh and zingy also. I only had a card (not on skin) but a sort of cold incense and floral accord started to pervade then -- seemed a little powdery later. The overall smell was lovely -- maybe a touch feminine imo.

Need to test on skin ideally.

Translation of the Elisabeth de Feydeau article linked by etoile above:

    "L'Orpheline by Serge Lutens

The most recent creation from Serge Lutens is inspired by ashes.

Between fire and dust, fumes rising to sky and cemetery, the author-perfumer tells us a story that issues from from his entrails, his intimate childhood. The hidden face of a painful past, this perfume reveals pitilessly yet with restraint, the cry of a child, the deaf pain of abandonment without words yet buried in silence.

How to escape, if not through creation? How to surpass (the pain) if not by elevating it?

Incense and musks extend to him both a stairway to heaven and a duvet-like reassurance, so cruelly lacking from his childhood, part-orphaned.

Faced with so much pain, I bow to the artist, and give him leave to speak his words of freedom and salvation:

    1) Another girl!

Yes, if I consider her an abandoned part of myself. As a child, I divided the world in two. On the one hand, The Conquered (feminine) - not the loser! - and more precisely, I lifted up in myself that which was germinating in her; and on the other hand, The Conquerer (masculine).

For a child, the world is summarized in three persons: himself, his mother and his father. Without everyone necessarily making such a split choice as mine, each will be dependent on this (world) for the rest of his life.

    2) Your choice was the mother?

Not the mother, but her wound; I carried it. It is without a doubt an identification.

As with anyone, my life owes much to chance. The perfect example seems to me to be the person who achieves fame through a roll of the dice - it's a hell of a number - it is he who drives to where we must exist (be born) or not exist. I wouldn't relive the major episodes of my destiny, but the difference between what was and what I felt was massive. At the same time, the child is clairvoyant: he divines. Because I accorded the wound with all the qualities of the feminine, it decorated me (as in, to decorate a knight).

    3) Are we to understand that from this moment the "masculine" was denied in you?

In all that it officially imposed, to my eyes: army, authority, power, order, moralisation, yes. I was at war with The Male: evil (there's a wordplay between "le Mâle" and "le mal" here). Expecting that from this moment, I invent for myself a woman and bring us both to light, it's a baptism by blood.

    4) Let's come back to the (female) orphan. Is it you?

Not originally. She was a virgin territory and she attracted me, but I didn't recognise myself in her; this territory that I denied myself was that of men. My mother was the anger and I, her son, was her revenge.

    5) And the father, where is he?

The father is the declared enemy. I was rage against Earth, against Father.

From the mother, I was the prone figure, and from the father, the assissin. The wound doesn't heal. I could blind myself, but I'd still see: the fatehr was immortal. From him I kept the feminine, which he denied.

    6) How did you find the path of the perfume within this labyrinth?

It is memory, forgiveness and in a way, how it might persist today: in dust. Not only is (the perfume) in the feminine, but it has no plural. From my life, it is the sillage that remains when all has disappeared. She is the invisible that, veil after veil, right where we forget her, fades to grey.

Got my bottle of L'Orpheline a few days ago, but decided to comment on it after wearing it for 2 days. Strong on the outside but soft inside. Rather complex in that all the notes are there but not easy to pinpoint the real source at different stages. Initial whiff is incense, frankincense and myrrh. Dry musk. The animalistic part probably from castoreum and/or civet too, but then it could be from a carnal type of oud, though very very faint. Just my observation, could be wrong. The floral part could be from carnation as I detect a hint of clove. Not particularly feminine overall. I think it is extremely sophisticated. Love it on my skin.

I tried it yesterday. From the blotter I smelt white musk, which I usually hate, but on my skin it smelt very different. A really subdued incense and something powdery-metallic reminding of his eaux. I was intending to buy it on the spot before smelling it, but I have to say I was disappointed. It is not intense, not fumey, not spicy, not colourful. It is just too ho-hum IMO. Maybe I need to give it more tries, but I really was left with a weak impression. Damn!

I found it a bit barbershoppy, with that typical fougère smell... it was pretty light, not a lot of incense, mostly white musk (but not sweet). I think I will give it a skip. L'Incendiare sounds much more interesting (read Elena Vosnaki's review on Fragrantica).

Not to reply to my own post, but I found additional information about L'Incendiaire on AuParfum (French site).

    http://www.auparfum.com/l-incendiair...lume-la-flamme

It appears L'Incendiaire is part of a new launch in January 2015 of 5-6 «ultra-niche» fragrances and will be 450 euros for 50ml. That pretty much kills my interest in it, whatever it smells like.

That cost is insanely expensive, but it may be a split worthy.

L'ORPHELINE (The Orphan) is really weird name for a fragrance.
    Must admit it's intriguing though.

For folks in the US, L'Orphaline hit Lucky Scent recently. I for one love it and snapped up a bottle (review here on basenotes). The name alone for L'incendiaire has me salivating. If anyone samples it or gets access to notes, please post!

Eghads, I hope with wider distribution that price point comes down!!!

Also, my review of L'Orpheline is languishing in administrator approval land (as tends to happen on basenotes). So I am posting here:

Cool, flinty incense and warm musk in a summersault tussle. I'm an introspective person who runs hot-cold, so the concept and execution resonate with me. Also an incense lover who's a sucker for anything incense + whatever bee I have in my bonnet (which with fall coming happens to be musk). Layers well with a few other scents that I love but that needed a dose of L'Orpheline to truly embrace me how I want to be held - fully, but without crushing my solitary spaces. Snapped up a full bottle as soon as it hit Lucky Scent!

Shiseido has registered a few trademarks in 2013, especially these two sound promising: "L'ORPHELINE" (The Orphan) and "L'INCENDIAIRE" (The Arsonist).
One of them could be the new release for the Export-Line and the other one might be another Exclusive Bell Jar.
In the uk the l'incendaire launches in Harrods in October - priced £380 for 50ml

Here is the description of L`incendiaire:

"Sensual and opulent skin perfumery. Rare resins, saps, ambers and tarmac. Insanely elegant and deep."
As I understand, there is oud inside.

And little more news, soon will be released Rahat Loukoum in Le vaporisateur tout noir

I wore L'Incendiaire a couple of days ago. There's real oud in there. It's nice, maybe even beautiful. Yes, $600 for 50ml. It's not as strong as one would like at that price point, imo. Nothing groundbreaking, but they did a good job. It's good oud, as far as I can detect, not young, band-aid oud, and maybe a little less civilized than Roja's oud. Which I count as a plus. Definitely some musk, probably some amber. I never get a good sense of a fragrance in one wear, so I need to try it again.

First the 17,000€ Guerlain fragrance, now the $600 Serge Lutens. It seems to become a trend to make Roja Dove look cheap.

They have had this at Barney's for the past two weeks. I only got to smell it on a strip, and yes it is by far the smokiest lutens ever. Blows serge noire out of the water, but in a smoother, fuller way. Is it good perfume though?

Also the $600/50ml tag killed whatever joy I had smelling it, despite the incredibly beautiful bottle.

  29. #59

Default Re: Serge Lutens - Any news about the 2014 exclusive range perfume?

I think the problem is that Lutens' perfumes have been rather reasonably priced in the past, so this $600 for 50 ml is incredibly alienating to part of his current customer base. In Roja Dove's case his perfumes have always been outrageously expensive, so there is no surprise with the prices.

In my case this is prohibitively expensive even for a split: probably around 130 dollars for 10 ml (including shipping and bottles)... for this price the perfume better knock me flat out on my back or send me into rapturous ecstasy on the spot... seeing as though I doubt this will happen, no thanks, and I wish them good luck with that.

Often times , the hosting department store or boutique will request a limited edition or special edition that's priced absurdly high.
