    Default Dsquared Potion Black

I just got this a week back and I really like it.

A wonderful Rose, Incense , Tobacco scent with overtones of leather.

It has a very sophisticated and romantic vibe. This is quite the under rated fragrance IMO, and the price is a deal. Dsquared's best for sure up till now.

I get average projection but excellent longevity about 11 hours, with this one.

Any others who own this beauty?

If i remember, Jack Hunter is a big fan of this. I inquired about it around its release and he had some positive things to say. I STILL haven't smell it. I can't find anywhere to get it in the US. Where did you purchase it?

I just had to buy this after smelling it. A masculine fresh dark rose and incense accord that has a slight peppery sweetness from the pimento. Out of this you get hints of leather, tobacco, woods with a dash of oud. And I have to say imo it smells really good.

It also smells much more expensive than it actually is and it gives off a really classy romantic vibe making it perfect for evenings out.

How does the rose note compare to Noir de Noir? It sounds similar.

The notes sound wonderful and it's available at around £50 for a 100ml which seems like good value but I'm torn between this and Aramis Calligraphy Rose.

The rose is more brighter, think pink rose. Noir de Noir is more darker and earthier because of the patchouli and chocolate like notes.

That is interesting as I'm seeking an opulent yet bright rose note.

Now to track down a sample.

Great fragrance. Purchased it about two months ago. The priced has dropped from a year ago. Amazon had a few for about $70.00. One of the best designer scents in a while IMO. More of an intense version with rose of the edt Dsquared Potion.

Was it because it did not have the "MADE IN FRANCE" label , your criteria for purchasing fragrances,

It really does, its smells superb in colder air. Definitely one of the few stunner designer fragrances I have smelt in a LONG WHILE.

Really its there, but I think depending on your nose or the weather, different notes stick out more.

No, they are totally different, especially in the mid notes and drydown. Oud Ispahan is a very natural smelling animalic oud wood with patchouli , rose and sandalwood.

Potion Black is more of Tobacco Rose and incense fragrance.

Blind bought this a little while back. 1st wearing really didn't impress me too much. But, because of this thread, I just broke it back out and put a quick spritz on my hand. I am really really liking it right now. I am not sure if it's just me, or if it works better in warmer weather, or if it's because my skin is slightly more oily (being later in the day). Probably just my nose is detecting it a little differently today, but I must say, it smells much deeper and richer than the last time I wore it. I will have to give it another full wearing very soon.

To me, this smells almost nothing like Dior Oud Ispahan, but they do share some common notes of course.

How are the performances for you guys? I like the scent but i get terrible longevity with it (about 3 hours) for this type of fragrance and projection also minimal. Ussualy my skin is very friendly with fragrances so maybe the sample i tested it from had a problem?

I just received my blind buy bottle today and sprayed it on skin an hour and a half ago for an initial read... First off, the rose is nicely done though I wish there were a bit more of it. It was definitely there early and still is, but it is quite light; more of a supporting note, IMO. My real gripe with the composition is its liberal use of cashmeran. Cashmeran comes off as synthetic soft woods, and I find the rose (and everything else) smothered in them.

All in all, Black is not a bad composition for sure, but unfortunately not the kind of thing I enjoy wearing... As things stand so far with its development, I very much prefer the original Potion to Black (which as an aside smells nothing like it). Oh well, at least I like the bottle. ;-)

edit: My neutral opinion on the composition remains, now through 12 hours on skin, but I think it is safe to say performance is not a problem with Royal Black. The composition still has plenty of potency all these hours later... That cashmeran is relentless in its tenacity...

Is cashmeran also used in Gucci Forever Now? There is something in Royal Black that somewhat reminds me of Gucci Forever Now except Royal black is more intense and with an addition of rose.

For a good example of Cashmeran (combined with Rose and Pepper, co-incidentally), check out Declaration d'Un Soir.

To my indiscernible nose, there is very little or no resemblance between the two scents except the notes indicate both have rose in them. The rose in Declaration d'Un Soir is more prominent, transparent, and coexisting with pepper while the rose in Potion Royal Black is less prominent and overwhelmed by the smoky incense and wood. If I may say, Declaration d'Un Soir is a spring or summer scent while Potion Royal Black better suits fall or winter but then of course, one can wear whenever he wants.

How forward is the rose in this fragrance? Rose is a huge hit or miss with me. I can tolerate rose in small doses, but if it's pushed up forward and more in your face I cannot stand it. For what it's worth, I think the original Potion is a vastly underrated scent.

This thing does project on me , esp in the drydown , a strong rose musk. This beats the vast majority of niche fragrance I smelt at Nieman's last week.

I agree it's a stand out and it punches well above it's weight. It's a very satisfying romantic rose fragrance with nuances of leather, oud, tobacco and woods within it's composition.

I tested Royal Black again last night and this time my nose picked up the rose note a bit more than the first few wearings. Therefore, the rose is a bit more prominent than I previously thought. FYI.

I just had a chance to try Potion Royal Black on skin, thanks to a sample sent by a generous friend here on BN (thanks again!!)

I've been wearing it for a few hours and it smelled oh so familiar, yet I couldn't put my finger on it. The rose is there, but not in a typical flowery sense. It's more of candied rose petals, with sugar and spice (pimento pepper?!?), and kind of oudy vibe. And then it hit me... Oud Ispahan - it's the same 'type' rose, and the drydown is amazingly similar. Oud Ispahan is just 100 times stronger and will survive a shower or two, and a wash cycle if you spray it on clothes, while Potion Royal Black has more down to earth sillage and persistence. If you like OI but find it too big and heavy - definitely try PRB - the similarity is uncanny, especially in the drydown - but it won't clear the room and kill plants as you walk by them. The first 15-20 minutes PRB feels a little synthetic, more like a designer fragrance than expensive niche, but after that... it's actually pretty nice and very similar to OI drydown. For some $55 a bottle that it goes for online - it's a great fragrance.

Thanks for the review... I never bothered getting a sample of Oud Ispahan but I just ordered this one blind so now I will at least have an idea how oud ispahan smells like.

Got it today and was somewhat disappointed... that chemical sharp note that I hate so much is found in this composition (also found in most fake-oud fragrances) and it's loud especially in the dry down which makes this whole thing smell generic and cheap. Another masculine fragrance with "woodsy" screechy notes, YAY that's all we need... more of those!

Edit: Top and mid stages weren't so bad though!

Oud Ispahan and Potion Black are totally different wtf.
Oud Ispahan, is agarwood bakhoor chips , syrupy rose, and a bit of patchouli.
Potion Black is a Tobacco Rose, with Tobacco, Leather and Rose, with a musky (Cashmeran) drydown.

I love both of them but comparing them makes no sense, they are totally different fragrances.
