Default What's a designer scent that could easily pass as niche?

Outside of Christian Dior.....is there anything available out there currently (not vintage) that could pass for niche?

    Be interested to hear....

Yes, great smell but suspect longevity. I only get three hours with it been subdued by hour two, but that is from a sample. Though others have reported good longevity.

Most of the Tom Ford fragrances- in my personal opinion, this fragrance house is far more on the verge between designer and niche and even their regular, non-limited lines are often well-crafted enough to pass as niche (in fact, when I first tested fragrances like Black Orchid or Grey Vetiver, my first reaction was: "Wow, these are some fine niche scents").

Basically, I think almost all designer scents are better than at least a few niche scents, so the answer to your question is: all of them.

But if by "niche", you mean "good niche" then:

    Chanel Egoiste
    YSL Splendid Wood
    YSL Noble Leather
    YSL Oud Absolu
    The entire Armani Prive line
Tom Ford line - including Private Blend
    Lalique Encre Noire
    Dolce & Gabbana The One
    Gucci Pour Homme II
    Scentstory - 24 Gold
    Hermes - Terre d'Hermes
    Mugler Cologne
    Mugler - Pure Havane
    Mugler - Pure Malt

    AND KENNETH COLE BLACK!!
    Current Summer Favorites:

    1. Creed - Original Cologne
    2. Xerjoff - Nio
    3. Creed - Aventus
    4. The Different Company - De Bachmakov
    5. Dior - Homme Sport 2008
    6. Tom Ford - Grey Vetiver
    7. Montale - Aoud Legacy
    8. Dior - Homme Sport 2012
    9. Tom Ford - Rive d'Ambre
    10. Creed - Virgin Island Water

I'm not sure what "pass as niche" means, really. If you mean outside-the-norm, and you're already excluding Dior, then maybe:

    Bulgari Black
    M7 Oud Absolu
Any number of CdG, as has been mentioned (maybe try Vettiveru or the new Serpentine for a warm weather CdG?)

Personally I thought he meant "what designer scents have a "niche" approach in terms of creativity, uniqueness, of being "positively different" from the usual mainstream trends".

If you're asking designer (with modest price) that can be a niche:

    GPH II

Ah. If he meant that, then:

    1 Million
    Acqua di Gio

When they came out, they were probably more unique and groundbreaking (or as you put it: "positively different" from the usual mainstream trends") than any niche in the last 15 years.

Guerlain l'instant Extreme has to be up there and i'll add Eau Savage EDP a close second. Rich, well blended with obviously good ingredients.

If Azzaro Pour Homme was made with some less synthetic notes as per 'niche quality' it'd be untouchable (in my opinion, to my nose)

I will add that I tested half of the Xerjoff line recently and to be honest it was a 'you get what you pay for' epiphany moment for me.

Not that I can pay for any of them in my post vacation depths of debt.

Is Guerlain and/or Comme de Garcons considered niche? If so, then my list would be a lot longer!

If so, then I'd say Encre Noir,

    Prada Infusion d'Homme.
    Prada Amber.

I admire Prada for taking such a different approach than the rest of the designer market. Most designers end up with wishy washy average scents because they try to appeal to everybody. And while that may seem like a good approach, it leads to mediocrity as everything becomes bland. Prada, on the other hand, seems to know exactly who they're targeting with their scents. Their stuff isn't going to appeal to everybody, but those who like it will probably love it.

I agree. I'd say the same for Black Orchid as well, but then again, once you're over the $100 price point, you're practically in niche territory.

Niche is an interesting term. It has no meaning, yet means so much to so many even though few can agree on what it means. Really, there should be several terms instead of just the one word "niche." One guy making perfume is technically Niche. Comme de Garcons isn't niche, but their scents smell more niche than many niche houses! Bond no 9 and Creed are corporate niche, which is a whole different world than an Andy Tauer niche. And though Bond is niche, they're getting more and more mall exposure, first at Nordstrom and now at Sephora too.

I think it's funny how people assume that because a company doesn't have a clothing or accessories line, their fragrances have more merit than those of a designer.

Perhaps, decades ago, the word Niche had meaning, but today it doesn't.

Lalique Encre Noire could be considered niche based on its performance. The actual scent is really high quality too, but it's not exactly complex like most niche fragrances.

Also, anything by Jean Claude Ellena could be considered niche. Un Jardin Sur Le Nil is an amazing scent that I wish lasted longer, and Terre D'Hermes is a great scent that performs pretty well.
