Default I want "clean" but something distinguished

Mind you, I've been looking for a signature scent, something that smells clean, crisp (think freshly pressed shirt) but at the same time doesn't come off as non-descript or boring.

I used to alternate between Bulgari Pour Homme Extreme and Mugler Cologne, later replacing Mugler with Creed Original Vetiver and still trying to find that second scent. I've looked at Lutens L'eau Lutens (first release), Ramon Monegal Umbra (love the scent, the dry-down is perfect for what I'm looking for, but there's a phase that comes off as wet cotton/paper and it annoys me). Which reminded me sorta of one of those Cereus scents - #4 or #7. I forget.

Marc Jacobs for Men is friggin' awesome, but it lasts so short. And for a fig scent, you'd think it'd do better. But even Diptyque's Philosykos EDP doesn't last, but it's such a close to amazing scent for what I'm looking for. I've even looked to Xerjoff Mefisto (SMW but with way better citrus) but it's just an occasional wear for me - less clean but hits the spot when I'm in the mood for it.

I've expanded into some masculine florals, where Creed Original Cologne has become almost the favorite but I find myself reaching for it rarely as of late. Recently purchased Helmut Lang EDC, and I can't say that it's a long-lasting fragrance. When it starts, it's perfect, but it dies too quickly. Damn shame too.

So... what would you guys recommend? I've tried the Prada Infusion's for men (way soapy), I've tried Infini Oolang (loved it, wished it lasted longer), I've been around looking for something that just has a clean smell but doesn't really offend or grab too much attention but lasts a while.

Sorry for the long post. Just wanted to knock out a few that I've used on this journey. If anything, I tend to default to this kind of scent when I can't make up my mind. Thanks in advance.

    Terre D'Hermes

The orange, orange blossom, and grapefruit smell really natural and the give the fragrance a really fresh feel. However, those notes sit over some vetiver and woods that adds some earthiness to the overall scent. The end result is an earthy, dirty orange type of smell that comes off as smelling extremely professional and appropriate for the workplace.

The only downside is that it's not very sensual, but I still get compliments from it all the time. There's this one pretty girl at work who absolutely this fragrance and follows me around just to get a whiff of it.

It's super versatile also. It can be worn in any season, and it can be worn for any occasion. It's a better daytime fragrance, but it works really well at night too. Projection is the best I've experienced in a "fresh" fragrance as well. Easy 3 hours of beastly projection, and then it lasts another 5 hours closer to the skin. Great juice!

    Hope this helps your search.

Clean crisp linen is a vibe I get from MFK Acqua Universalis Forte and Acqua Universalis. Two very fresh, very long lasting scents with some good character worth checking out IMO.
    Seasonal favorites:

    1. Creed - Spice & Wood
    2. Creed - Aventus
    3. Dior - Vetiver
    4. by Kilian - Incense Oud
    5. Puredistance - Black
    6. by Kilian - Cruel Intentions
    7. Armani Privé - Oud Royal
    8. Brückner - Aoud 1
    9. Neela Vermeire - Trayee
    10. Creed - Royal Oud

I must say I tend to find the style pleasant, but, indeed, a bit boring. I second Aqua Universalis - though that too doesn't escape a certain non-descriptiveness. But it is indeed the perfect clean laundry scent-and indeed, I enjoy it that way (it comes as a laundry detergent as well).

I'm wondering whether you can enlarge the search a little bit. For instance, CDG 2 man is an incense, but it comes off as extremely clean. Or if you want to go into green scents, many are quite clean, sometimes even slightly soapy. Examples would be Insense (discontinued but it can still be found online), Estee Lauder Private Collection, Jacomo Silences, Futur, etc.

Going with the clean and crisp vibe you've described, but still not run-of-the-mill:

Comme des Garcons Odeur 71 (very appealing, but certainly clean and crisp)
Frederic Malle Geranium Pour Monsieur (a little goes a long way)
Gaultier Fleur du Male (orange blossom over a soapy slight barbershop vibe)
Givenchy Insense (dry floral with almost a laundry effect to me, but crisp and lovely)

All of these last all day, easily.

Absolue Pour le Matin (alternative: Prada Infusion d'Homme)

Oh wow, thanks for the awesome replies and suggestions!

I've tried CdG Man 2, which reminded me of Le Labo Vetiver 46. There's a clean component to it, but there's a bit of unclean in there. Can't say I was a fan for this particular itch. I do own Odeur 71, love it but there's a note that smells like the fuzz off of a lightbulb (way specific, but it's there for my nose).

Rive Gauche is barbershop clean, but slightly different than what I'm looking for.

I've seen MFK thrown about, will have to check it out further. I've done samples of Aqua Universalis, but there's a note that screeches at me. I've seen other threads about such a note that seemingly "yells" out, but I think it's just me on that one.

I also own and use regularly Tom Ford Grey Vetiver and Terre D'Hermes. Bought them for that purpose and they "do the job", but unlike my old favorites Bulgari Pour Homme, I don't find myself reaching for it 3 or so days in a row. But my goodness... there's so many others in this thread that I've yet to test or haven't given a chance to that it seems like I'm missing out!

Thanks again. Any other recommendations will be appreciated.

Never smelled any of the Malle fragrances, save Noir Epices and Musc Ravageur. In fact, this one I've somewhat avoided because folks here at BN kept repeating "toothpaste" - sounds like I need to give this one a chance. Thanks!

If one thinks every orange based scent smells like lemonade than you find GPM smell like toothpaste. Mind thought, the mint is just in the opening. It's a great scent as the genre isn't my favorite but still I adore this scent and it will always be in my collection.

Okay, got some samples and a bottle of Penhaligon's Sartorial. Also found a place that sells Patrick of Ireland for relatively inexpensive and local.

Penhaligon's Sartorial - this reminds me of what Brut used to smell like on my father growing up some 35+ years ago. I mean, I've been reliving old thoughts and it's about as manly and "clean" as you can get. Love the fact that it doesn't really play too far from the skin, but it's an enjoyable scent.

Patrick of Ireland - wow... this is clean. I mean, I took a shower, scrubbed myself with a loofa under a waterfall type of clean. This... works.

    • Dior Vetiver
    • Malle Vetiver Extraordinaire
    • Malle Geranium Pour Monsieur

These are next. If I can find the Dior Vetiver, that is. Byredo's Sunday Cologne is also coming in - I think that's more of my style too.

Thank you again all that took the time to give me some great new directions. Sartorial is a keeper, but I think it's more for memory than a signature scent.
