Default Opium PH, price increases, discontinued soon?

    Good morning everyone,

I have noticed that the prices of YSL, Opium Pour Homme EDT have increased dramatically. Additionally, it is much harder to find on many of the sites we use to purchase fragrances, ie fragrancenet, etc... I remember about 2 years ago it was being sold at Marshall's and TJ MAXX on the cheap. Man i wish i stocked up. I know it is currently not discontinued, but is it impending doom? Would this explain the price increases and scarce bottles? What is going on??

My guess is that it is being phased out of the american market, and unsold old stock is running out. Its still being advertised (along with edp) on the french ysl site,

Can still be found but with much more difficulty. As for price increase, doesn't surprise me.

I think YSL has discontinued most of their classics, so it's likely. I know for a fact that Rive Gauche, and M7 are discontinued. Even though they reintroduced RG in the La Collection line, according to YSL, these were limited time offerings. I recently did a search for Rive Gauche online, and found very very limited results; even with full priced La Collection bottles. It's crazy because like Opium, which I too remember seeing at TJ Maxx for around 30 a bottle a few years back.. I no longer see RG going for cheap prices online. You used to be able to buy a 4.2 oz can for 25 bucks easy, on any website. Quickly vanishing.
    My Current Top 10:

    Rive Gauche Light (2004)
    Fahrenheit (1988)
    Paul Smith Man (2009)
    Burberry London (2006)
    Prada Amber pour Homme (2006)
    Live Jazz (1998)
    Eau des Baux (2006)
    Midnight in Paris EDP (2010)
    Arpege pour Homme (2005)
    Eau Duelle (2010)

Sad to hear that! These classics are golden chains of perfumery, remaining are trashes....
    My all time favorite:

    Dior Fahrenheit

I was wondering about this. The only male YSL fragrances I have see in stores lately are L'Homme and its flankers.

Anything is possible with YSL. They are known for high profile discontinuations (along with Gucci).

Athough a classic, the companies are more concerned whether a product has a market or not. If it is no longer in fashion (and lets face it, Opium's appeal is not that wide) then why keep it? I really do not think they treat fragrances as "art" or part of their heritage (though they probably should).

I'm pretty sure i have a 3/4 bottle of this still sitting in my old bedroom at my parents. I remember I had a date about 10 years ago with this pretty young women and she told me that I smell horrible and musky, I told her it was Opium for men and she told me that it smells like what she imagined Dog the bounty hunters musk would smell like. LOL. I never wore it again.
