Default L'air du Desert Marocain vs Ambre Sultan

Let's say you have both in your collection and love them both. Your bottles are running low.

If you have to buy a backup bottle of only one of them (both is not an option), which one would you choose and keep in your collection.?

    For me it's Ambre Sultan.

Both great. I voted for LADDM because it's starker and more unique.

As it is highly unlikely I would ever have a Tauer composition in my wardrobe since I dislike his signature style (LDDM no exception), the choice would be quite easy... Ambre Sultan (which is quite deserving regardless).

Ambre Sultan on any number of levels, but L'Air is none the less good, if rough around the edges.

Likewise. The trademark Lutens sweetness doesn't work for me at all, so I vote Tauer.

Gotta go with LDDM as I cannot tolerate the kitchen spice rack accord you have to get through before you get to the glorious amber.

Maybe I shouldn't have voted as I've only tried the LADDM, but I thought it was a pretty unique and inoffensive frag.
Wouldn't mind owning some, but the cost scares me off a bit.

Interesting to chart people's perception. I'd have said the same thing inverted: the Tauer is just too sweet in the drydown for me, where as the savory element in Ambre Sultan keeps amber's olfactory sweet "swamp" in check.

I don't find them similar at all, and kind of an odd comparison for me. But If I just had to pick one for the hell of it, I can't be without Tauer's masterpiece. So that's my pick!

Ambre Sultan for me. I'm one of few people on this site who finds LDDM to be quite unremarkable. Perhaps it's just how it reacts to my skin chemistry, but I've sampled it many times and have always been underwhelmed by the experience.

I don't find it odd at all. I know they're not similar (duh) but they're both popular amber based fragrances with exquisite amber drydowns, so i wanted to know which one gets the extra love among basenoters.

For me, it's L'air du Desert Marocain by a wide margin. The two are very different scents, but I understand the comparison, especially in terms of the later drydowns. I'd choose LDDM every time, and there are more times when it can be worn. LDDM is so dry that it's easy to wear year-round, even in the summer provided that summers aren't humid where you live. I don't know how it would wear in humid heat since summers are dry where I live... but here, it wears quite well in summer. And in winter, it's fantastic.

If you like amber you should have both.

I prefer the drier, less weighty L'Air du Desert Marocain.

Perfumes can have different notes but be linked by the same idea. LDDM and AS, while being amber frags, are completely conceptually different. Amber Sultan is replaceable, LDDM is not. While AS is much easier to wear for me, LDDM is much more interesting and evocative. I sold my bottle of AS because Amber Absolute gives me what I like in AS and so much more. I kept my bottle of LDDM, and will never let it go.

But laddm is the more unique of two.

    I'd get laddm.

    LDDM

Have both and yes both are great frags and will always have both in my stash but the Tauer gives me the amber from the very start and the spice opening is more manageable than Ambre Sultan bitter herbal spice opening.

Yes. What was the prob. I find it shoots very short bursts.

I find LdDM quite harsh and loud. Overall it's not a very pleasing scent. I don't know if I could ever wear it. I haven't smelled Ambre Sultan, but given that it's a Serge Lutens, I doubt I would care for it. I'd still like to try, though.
