    Default Vintage Discontinued Fragrances

What do you consider vintage and/or discontinued fragrances that a serious fragrance collector should have in their collection? As an example, the original Patou Pour Homme gets a lot of praise, but the reformulated version is not nearly as well received. Looking for suggestions for a truly memorable scent.

Long time discontinued, Siecle by Fragonard IMO the best they ever made.

Speaking from a purely personal perspective, I would like to think that my recent purchase of Royal Scottish Lavender by Creed fits this description, but of course there are many, many more.

Too many to mention and it depends upon what you're seeking.

Thanks for the replies thus far. My interest in fragrances has broadened since I started following posts on Basenotes. Initially, I was strictly a citrus guy, but I now have a bit of everything. In this group, 140 fragrances is nothing unusual, but I have tried to pick up a diverse selection of well constructed frags with longevity of at least 2 hours. I like everything from a rich gourmand to a classic fougere, to a linear summer citrus, to a heavy leather.

What I don't like are cheap, synthetic fragrances. While money is not an issue, I find it silly to spend money just because you can. Case in point, one of my favorite summer frags is Monsieur Balmain. Now in the winter I do like Enigma, Parfum Extrait.

This! There is dozens of discontinued scents which may be worth having in your collection, mostly because a collection must be made of scents that you like, and the only way to discover that is testing, testing and testing...

Actually, many of my purchases are blind buys. I like doing the research, learning about the notes and the feedback from the many experienced frag connoisseurs on this forum. As I said, I like a diverse selection of fragrances and am curious what you think is worthy. Once I get your input, I then can determine if it makes sense for me.

I am happy to say that I have every single one on Badarun's list but for Kipling, which I ran out of many years ago. I must have started collecting a long time ago and I am showing my age.

A few of my favorites I'll add to badarun's list:

    Charles Jourdan Un Homme
    Lanvin Man
    Monsieur Carven
    M de Morabito
    Ungaro I
    Ungaro II

    These are all superb.

It's a shame that so many great frags are no longer being made.

The problem is usually cost - some of the vintage stuff costs $$$ on ebay.

Great lists already. As said,it's true that many have been reformulated. But I wouldn't be so negative on many of them (eg Derby seems still perfectly fine for me). Unfortunately, i must agree on many others.

    In any case, some suggestions;
    1) A vintage masculine citrus chypre: this genre has indeed been reformulated notably, because of the oakmoss restrictions. Examples would be Eau Sauvage, or also Cravache, Goutal Eau d'Hadrien, Chanel pour monsieur, all in their vintage form.
    2) Fougere royale: I put this in just for the sake of it, since it's impossible to find, at any price (I smelled it at the Osmotheque in Paris). This is the father of all fougeres (and of all modern perfumery, according to many), and smells fantastic, like the most pleasant barbershop in the world. The stuff with this name sold right now has nothing to do with the original (different brand too, if you will, the brand changed hands several times).
    3) Coty Chypre: also for historical reasons, it's chypre 1.0. Not impossible to find for reasonable prices.
    4) Monsieur Rochas vintage. Great, citrus and dry tobacco, perhaps not as memorable as the others, but i mention because I got it for little on ebay.

Among countless others: Gucci Nobile, Spazio Krizia, Joint by Roccobarocco, Davidoff Relax (first three, classic chypres, the fourth, a rich fougere, the type of fougere hardly manufactured nowadays even by niche), Fendi Theorema Uomo and Life Essence, Biagiotti Venezia Uomo, Guy Laroche Horizon (even if occasional remaining bottles of this one do resurface), Joop! What About Adam.
