Default Citrus causing Headaches? Other Cheap Options?

I've been trying many 'citrus' colognes over the past 10 days or so and in those 10 days I've had more headaches than I had in at least 6 months prior to it. Can certain types of colognes cause headaches? Or is it just the fact that I've smelled so many different colognes during this time period? The only other cologne that has given me a headache in the past is Curve.

If you feel (like I'm starting to) that it's the citrus causing the problems, are there any sub $25 (for 1.7+ oz) colognes that you would recommend that aren't citrus?

I know I want to try Rochas Man. Possibly Tommy because of all the colognes I've gone through this week this is the one that didn't cause a headache or give me the feeling I might get a headache by wearing it. Possibly Versace Blue Jeans?

In the past I've liked an ending note of vanilla but at this point I'm open to anything. I've got some Hugo by Hugo Boss so I don't need anything that has the same fragrance of it.

I appreciate all your help and patience.

There are plenty of anecdotes about fragrance ingredients that cause headaches, so it seems possible. I'm not sure I've ever heard too much about citrus doing that, but again, it's possible. I doubt it's the number of fragrances you've tried, though.

If you're looking for a vanilla base, you like gourmands, and want a $25-ish fragrance for 50ml, I'd say go with your gut and give Rochas Man a try. It's quite sweet, but many people enjoy it. And you certainly won't get any strong citrus! I think it's a nice one, personally.

It's very possible to get headaches from some perfumes. Though it's certainly not true citrus (of which there is little in modern sporty masculines), but some of the sharp materials that are now abundant in masculine perfumery, especially those that have the name "sport" or the like. So it's hard to identify the offending materials, and you simply have to try.

Rochas man is certainly a good option. If you want something fresh, you should try to smell Lush Dirty body spray, it's a body spray but it's better (and lasts longer) than most perfumes. You need to have a Lush store nearby, though. For something really cheap, there's that old staple, still good, Stetson original.

I've never had a fragrance give me a headache. Usually it's stress or sinus.

Rochas is a very nice gourmand frag. Well worth trying.
You like vanilla and want affordable, try Altamir by Ted Lapidus.
Maybe Perry Ellis 360*White. Both are very nice, affordable, heavy on the vanilla frags.
However both are different takes on vanilla

I used to have a very bad headache with ADG. I thought Essensa would get rid of it bit still have the same head splitting headache. I tried using 1 spray at the back of my neck on the hair but still a couple of hours later headache starts. I read an article somewhere about ingredients that causes this. The only other fragrance that is diesel fuel for life that gives me same headache. Perhaps i am just allergic to a certain ingredient.

If you've tried it, does it smell anything like Carlos Santana? I've got some of it and wear it from time to time but it's not something I would wear daily to work...I'm a 7th grade Math teacher.

How does Versace Blue Jeans or Curve Soul by LC compare to either of these?

I recently acquired a bottle of cerruti harmony edition. Had low expectations, but I am blown away. It's a fresh, citrus, vanilla and sandalwood (among other things) scent. It's not a standout scnet but unique and very rejuvenating. I also get allergies from certain scents, but this one I can wear even while I am having an allergy bout. Does not have any irritating elements in it, smells high quality and unique. Very average longevity, but it's inexpensive (but not cheaply made) and a lot better than any hugo frag or most citrus or aquatics for that matter.

I can honestly feel your pain. I have found that fragrances with a heavy dose of synthetic musk, white musk, such as Kilian's Musk Oud and Amouage's Musk Abyadh give me a raging headache. Also, I tend to stay away from many citrus frags as many contain that same musk in the base to help give the fragrance longevity and extend that cleanish feel. I see from fragrantica that Curve contains that note and the likely culprit may be that ingredient. Easy test would be to get a sample of a non-citrus scent like Musk Oud and see if it happens.

Yes, I own Rochas Man and the Carlos Santana. Rochas Man doesn't really smell like the Carlos Santana at all. Many people compare Rochas Man with Bond's New Haarlem if you're familiar with it (both the same perfumer), and Carlos Santana is probably closer to something like a more grown up 1 Million. To put it reductively, Rochas Man has a slight roasted, vanillic vibe (mocha/coffee) whereas the Santana is fruity that dries down to vanilla.

If you wouldn't wear Santana to work, I doubt you'd wear Rochas Man either.

If you want something vanillic (without citruses) but more refined and professional for your job, maybe Jaipur (Boucheron) in small amounts? Might come across as too formal, but worth a try. It's a good one.

Trying numerous sub $25 colognes in the past week and a half has given you headaches and you're surprised? Honestly, you have some good fragrances listed in your signature, I have no idea why you're so dead set on buying multiple bottles of cheapies.

Actually most, I'd say 90%, of what I've tried over the past 10 days were expensive (retail over $70) colognes.

Two that didn't cause a headache were Tommy (under $30 for 3.4 oz) and Swiss Unlimited ($21 for 2.5 oz)...go figure.

I may be wrong, but it sounds to me like you are simply over-spraying.
Perhaps not over-spraying any individual fragrance, but in total, you have been hitting it hard for 10 days.
Give your head a break for a couple of days and start again with an easy trigger finger.
Just test one fragrance per day.
I would be very surprised if two sprays per day of a smooth citrus like Eau Sauvage, Boucheron Pour Homme or Bulgari Pour Homme would cause this.

I am going to try and not sound like a snob with this but here it goes. My experience has not so much been that certain notes give me headaches but rather certain quality levels. Some people can wear cheaper scents all day long but they are the first ones to get me head throbbing. I dont know if its the quality of the alcohol or any number of factors but I find that if buy something of quality and limit sprays Im much less likely to induce a thumper. All is not lost though. My recommendation is to skip the grocery store or department stores as they rarely have any good deals. I would walk into any kohls store and try out some different scents and then hop on the computer and check fragrancenet to get it on the cheap. Many many bottles that will cost you $40-70 in a department store can run you as little as $10 and rarely go over $35. Other good places to look are TJ maxx, Ross and Marshalls. I think a good one to look into for you would be CK one shock. Its a slightly sweet floral/citrus that tones down relatively quickly into a nice fresh tobacco. The bottle makes you think highschool drop out but the juice is rather pleasant. and I dont get any headache from it. It can also be had pretty cheap. The thing to remember though is that just as much as fragrance is subjective so are its effects. What gives me a headache may be fine for you and there really is no way to know without testing.

I reckon it's in the blending -- some fragrances just jar. They have a certain discordancy
