For me, La Nuit
Thread: The One vs La Nuit?
If we'll just consider the smell and not the longetivity, sillage & projection..
who would win?
For me, La Nuit

Mean spirited, nasty, snide, sarcastic, hateful, and rude individuals on Basenotes don't warrant or deserve my or other Basenoters' acknowledgement or respect.
Smell: The One, then La Nuit EDT, then La Nuit EDP
Performance: La Nuit by far
I vote for The One.

JPG Le Male

Paco Rabanne Invictus
"Waste time wondering which "cologne" pulls better, and your genes will spread only by accident. A perfume should be right for the man, not for the job"
The One smells superb.
If it performed like La Nuit it would probably be too much for the world to handle.
The One. No contest for me.
Current Spring Favorites:
1. Creed - Spice & Wood
2. by Kilian - Straight to Heaven
3. Dior - Vetiver
4. Clive Christian - 1872 for Men
5. Tom Ford - Grey Vetiver
6. Ermenegildo Zegna - Haitian Vetiver
7. Les Nez - Turtle Vetiver Back
8. Tom Ford - Rive d’Ambre
9. Creed - Green Valley
10. Parfumerie Generale - Grand Siecle Intense 7.1
In terms of projection then the one wins for me.
La Nuit slightly better than The One on scent alone, and slightly better compliment getter I think. Both awesome, The One more versatile.
The one by far in terms of smell. Although in terms of compliments from girls they are pretty close, maybe more so for the one but in all fairness I wear it more as well.
Bijan for Men
Van Cleef and Arpels pour homme
Lolita Lempicka au Masculin (older version)
Bleu de Chanel edp
Armani Code Profumo
CK One Shock
Nautica Voyage (metal cap version)
Kenzo pour homme
This a difficult choice in my opinion, not if someone likes both, but also since (in my opinion) these fragrances perform quite similarly in terms of longevity and projection, albeit with entirely different notes and referring strictly to the EDT version of La Nuit barring any flankers.
My preference is slightly biased in favor of La Nuit, but still keeping The One in mind as more than honorable mention/second option.
OP has this same question on Fragrantica also, and I'll say what I said there -- for me, these are two apex predators when it comes to designer romantic female-compliment-attracting awesome-smelling scents. For me, La Nuit is a little less versatile than The One, La Nuit performs better in terms of longevity and projection than the One, for me La Nuit has been a slightly better compliment-getter. But regarding scent alone, it's a push -- I bet you'll have 50% of people liking one, 50% liking the other, both are widely admired on scent alone. The other scent which I'd put up against these two is L'Instant de Guerlain, similarly beautiful romantic scent
As discussed in the "Ridicule" thread, The One can open surprisingly large considering how fleeting it can be on some people. This may be compounded by the fact that, in order to get more longevity, people spray more. What that all boils down to is -- with The One, I spray at least 30 minutes before I go out, and preferably longer. Similar to Nautica, which also has a big (and shrill, IMO) opening.

The One by far for me.
The "winner" for me is "The None". These both are equally unappealing, IMO.
Current Top Favorites:

2) Giorgio for Men vintage/V.I.P. for Men (Giorgio Beverly Hills)
3) Dia Man vintage edt (Amouage)

4) Lalfeorosa (O'driù) - tie
6) Les Nombres d'Or Vetyver (Mona di Orio)
7) Captain vintage (Molyneux)
8) Tzora (Anat Fritz)
9) Javanese Patchouli (Zegna) - tie

Scent-wise, I'd choose The One, but I hate how it wears, so I don't own it. The One starts so BIG - too big for my tastes. But it fades away surprisingly quickly. I like moderate projection with excellent longevity. But The One gives me huge projection with disappointing longevity.
Choose either? I chose neither.
Current Favorites (not in any particular order)
Hanae Mori HM EDT
Gucci Pour Homme II
La Nuit for me. Though I actually dislike the smell of The One, so it wasn't a hard pick.
I find La Nuit more elegant. But both are sensual fragrances
Amazing scent, and although the OP mentioned that he isn't concerned about longevity, sillage and projection, I'm pretty lucky in the sense that it has pretty good performance on me.
Amazing that in a sea of new releases, reformulations, and flankers it has never dawned on DG to release an intense, extreme, or parfum version of The One...

The One.Thank you.
Both are nice... My vote goes to La Nuit...
La Nuit EDT for me wins in every aspect!
My all time favorite:
I'd say The One for scent.
MY STEALTHY FREEDOM.
La Nuit EdP - More restrained, understated, limited sillage, good longevity
La Nuit EdT - Clearer, sillage wise, good longevity
For me la nuit hands down. I liked the one when I first sprayed it but then it really smells like I accidentally spilled Hawaiian punch on myself.
Not only does La Nuit perform much better one me, I think it smells better.
Own both, La Nuit for me.
