Default What Are The Best Tobacco Colognes...Without The Sweet, Honey Or Powder?

    Greetings,

It seems like a lot of tobacco colognes have a sweet aspect to them - be it honey or vanilla or some sort of fruit added. Growing up, my Dad smoked fancy cigars and smelled like leather as well with the leather jackets he wore, briefcases and old 60's/70's classy leather furniture that he had in his office, so are there any tobacco colognes that just smell like you walked into a cigar store?

Now obviously I don't expect a cologne to just have one note - tobacco, but the other notes should stay away from anything sweet, so leather, woodsy, scotch, etc are fine. Basically the kind of cologne you would wear to a fancy poker game where a killer suit is required along with a huge bank roll.

Now before people recommend Aramis Havana - I have tried that one and just didn't particulary like the scent. So please skip that one and I prefer a more cigar over pipe or a cigarette type tobacco scent.

    I greatly appreciate your feedback.

    Thanks,

    HM

Tom Ford Tobacco Oud might be what you're looking for.

Cuir Tabac by David Jourquin perhaps might work.

Sounds like you're describing Creed Vintage Tabarome. Not sweet or a pipe tobacco scent at all. Very much the leathery scent you are wanting. It smells like you walked into the library at Harvard with leather book bindings and leather chairs all around, with tobacco plants mixed here and there.

But Vintage Tabarome isn't just about leather and tobacco. It's allegedly a collection of over 60 ingredients. Very much one of the most collectible fragrances around now, and very expensive since it's long out of production. Legendary stuff.

Cool thanks. Are these colognes that you both wear? I would generally prefer feedback from people who actually wear the cologne and love it.

Sonoma Scent Studio Tabac Aurea. Very dry tobacco.

Slumberhouse Jeke is the most realistic cigar smoke smell I know, but the drydown definitely leans sweet.

So far it would seem like the 60's/70's real man tobacco colognes are the most expensive - well over 100 dollars, where as you can buy all the sweet tobacco colognes for like 40 bucks.

You could try Varvatos Vintage. The topnotes are a bit sweet but they don't last, you end up with a Tobacco, Pine, Suede concoction.

Cumming is probably the best cigar note I've encountered but there is some sweetness to it. Vintage Tabarome doesn't strike me as cigar enough for you. Havana Reserva is more focused on the tobacco note than the regular formulation but it's not easy to find and may not be cigar enough either. It may be that you should simply try to put this sort of thing together yourself, perhaps by using the Perfumer's Apprentice site.

Perhaps also Very Valentino pour Homme- a quite dry, discreet, almost cooling pipe tobacco note.

Oh, I forgot Joint for Men, which isn't outrageously expensive, though it's a bit camphorous.

+1's to Jeke & vtg Tabarome...

Tribute attar is a potent tobacco too, the rose & other notes in this get easily lost.

Great question, HM. I say that because I had no idea there were so many tobacco-based frags available. In my collection, I have but two: Feuilles de Tabac by Miller Harris and Meerschaum by Soivohle.

You can see what 45 Basenotes say about FdT here: http://www.basenotes.net/ID26123267.html According to Fragrantica: The nose behind this fragrance is Lyn Harris. Top note is pimento; middle notes are sage and pine tree needles; base notes are tonka bean, patchouli and tobacco. There are more reviews here too: http://www.fragrantica.com/perfume/M...abac-4804.html

My only comment about FdT is that it's an EdP and, while that may help persistence, it may also affect dryness.

I can recommend with greater confidence Soivohle's Meerschaum. Here's how Fragrantica describes it: "Meerschaum features elegant and very intense layered tobacco with a rich green undertone, spices, floral accord, cedar, wild chamomile, a dark leathery amber and green moss." And I would agree with that description. Here's the link, http://www.fragrantica.com/perfume/S...aum-12374.html, but there is only one review. Alas, there's only one review on Basenotes too: http://www.basenotes.net/ID26134765.html However, both of these reviews are positive.

    I would add two comments. First: Zorn, the perfumer, calls this an "absolute," so it's quite potent. Second: If your dad smoked a pipe and you liked the smell and you wanted to bottle up that smell and decant it at will, Meerschaum would get you close. However, your dad would have had to smoke a rather serious tobacco. ;-}

    Hope this helps a little.

The first thing to come to my mind is SL Fumerie Turque. It's not like Tobacco Vanille with all that vanilla.

+1 on Liz Zorn Siovohle Meerschaum.

Smoker here and this is some amazing pipe tobacco with that prune smell to it, great stuff. But not exactly Cigar tobacco smell you are looking for.

ou're mostly just talking about coumarin, the mainstay of the fougère genre and the main component of the sweet smells of tobacco and hay. Might as well try some hay absolute while you're at it.

Definitely Chillum, although you have to like Mysore sandalwood also, it has loads of it.

I was so intrigued by the Meerschaum description and a blog article about her that I immediately ordered a sample of Meerschaum as well as a sample of Green Oakmoss!
