Default Help me pick a Vetiver that lasts

    Hey,

It's time to ask for some suggestions, once again.

I'm looking for a clean and crisp vetiver that lasts a while. Something along the lines of Vetiver Babylone from the Armani Privé series. I really like that one but it doesn't seem to last too long.

Please note that I really like the clean, formal, elegant type. Scents like Encre Noir won't fit the bill here.

I have access to: pretty much everything that's designer (not the exclusive lines unless they're listed afterwards), Heeley, Creed, Armani Privé, Les Heures de Cartier, Artisan Parfumeur, Serge Lutens, Tom Ford and The Different Company, that's about it.

I take it that Original Vetiver, Vetiver Veritas and Grey Vetiver might be something I should try out. What's the performance on those? Is there any scent you can recommend from the other brands?

Tom Ford Grey Vetiver is along the Vetiver Babylone line, and lasts quite a while for me (8 hours). One of the best in it's class IMO. However, I don't have a problem with the longevity of Vetiver Babylone either.

Original Vetiver is pretty light on the vetiver and longevity, but smells excellent. Vetiver Veritas lasts all day, but may not be what you are looking for - it is a much stronger/harsher vetiver scent (but certainly worth a try if you love vetiver).

I thought OV lasted quite a bit and was incredible. Lalique as well - I'm snapping up that having just sampled it this week. Right now I'm wearing Guerlain Vetiver and it seems light. I like a Vetiver that's going to punch you on the face and make you notice.

I would have also said Vetiver extraordinaire, the freshest and zingiest of the lot. But you don't list malle as a possibility, and it is very expensive.

TF Grey vetiver is good as well. In mainstream, Givenchy also does a nice vetiver, but I'm not sure it is distributed widely. And Dior has a very powerful vetiver in the exclusive collection.

Vetiver Extraordinaire is the longest lasting on my skin. Unfortunately, Grey Vetiver by Tom Ford lasts all of two second on me....perhaps its olfactory fatigue.

These are some great recommendations however, I would add Vetiver Fatal from Atelier to the list as a very nice vetiver fragrance.

Original Vetiver is one of the best smelling vetiver fragrances on the market. I own and love Tom fords grey vetiver and it lasts about a good 6-8 hours. I suggest you get your hands on a sample of Vetiver Royal Bourbon by Oriza L. Legrand. Best vetiver I've smelled in a long time. Maybe it fits you, it's worth a sample at least.

My favorite, long-lasting vetivers are Dior, Turtle Vetiver Back, and Encre Noire. Sycomore, Red Vetyver, and Grey Vetiver all perform well too.

Vetiver Extraordinaire is great, but doesn't last for me. Vetiver Tonka lasts fairly well
My favorites in no particular order:

Vintage Antaeus, Vintage Bel Ami, Puredistance M, Vetiver Extraordinaire, Tauer L'Air du Desert Marocain, MDCI Invasion Barbare, Amouage Jubilation XXV, Morabito Or Black, Sycomore, Gucci Pour Homme I, Jovoy Private Label, Geranium Pour Monsieur

Even Musc R has suffered from what I've read.

This is why I hate samples. I think so many people who rely on them to make a judgement of longevity and sillage could be misled by the relatively small amount of juice you are actually putting on the skin...I would suggest, 3-4 blasts from an actual SPRAY bottle to determine how well longevity and sillage will be...

3 sample trials from a SPRAY bottle at Sephora EDP. DOA IMO

This is one of the very best I've ever found. Impressive longevity. Highly recommended.

Another one worth your sampling is the Ermenegildo Zegna Haitian Vetiver.

They sell VE at Sephora up in NYC? Damn, they do not have any Frederick Malle scents at all down here in Florida. I had to order mine from Frederick Malle, direct....

And I disagree with you unfortunately on the longevity. Maybe you didnt use enough but 4-5 sprays and its a Vetiver BOMB !

or it could be your skin. My skin is usually terrible with longevity problems so this one really was surprising...the CDG Vettiveru was the absolute worse on me for longevity but had a similar vibe to VE...

Hi there Souryu. Personally I haven't purchased another vetiver fragrance in the last 4 years thanks to a fellow basenoter Trebor who introduced me to Vetiver oils. They have several advantages over fragrance sprays:
    1. You are not paying an extortionate amount for the oil as it costs around £10/5ml.
    2. The oil lasts a lot longer than the fragrance sprays.
    3. You only need a very tiny amount and is enough for at least 12 hours long projection.
    4. There are really radically different regional characteristics just like oud oils......varies from region to region.
    5. The oil is pure and natural.
    6. It's one of the finest layering agents I've ever had the pleasure to come across.
    7, 8, 9,.........blah, blah, blah!

Three of my personal favourites are:
    1. Chocolaty and seriously complex Sri Lankan organic vetiver from Oshadi
    2. Silky smooth velvety Bourbon vetiver from Aquaoleum
    3. Smoky leathery butch Javanese vetiver from Aquaoleum

That's a nice bunch of suggestions. Thanks for those. I'll check the availability and start sampling away.

The vetiver done by Guerlain does not appeal to me. It reminds me of the smell at my dentist. The Givenchy Vetiver has caught my attention upon reading the notes but unfortunately it is not carried by any local distributor in my country and I could never try it.

As for all the niche suggestions, I'll try and sample as many as I can the next time I take a trip to the city. I'm sure I'll end up finding what I'm looking for.
