Default Top Ten Designer Picks - with a few rules

What are your picks for the best designer scents available in stores? And, by stores, I mean brick & mortar stores you can go to locally.

Sometimes designers don't get enough credit here, so I thought it'd be fun to do a designer Best-Of thread for scents that one could go to a store and smell today. There are a lot of great designer scents that are only online - and that's fine, but this thread is about scents you could find in stores to sniff.

    • No vintage. We're talking about current juice here.
    • The scent must be available in stores.
    • No elitism, no snobbery, etc. This is about giving credit to designer scents that deserve to be highlighted.

Here's my list, though I'm sure I'm forgetting a few things.

    - Terre d'Hermes Parfum
    - Dior Homme
    - Fahrenheit
    - Prada Amber Intense
    - Tom Ford Extreme
    - Hanae Mori HM
    - Varvatos Vintage
    - Gucci Pour Homme II
    - Tom Ford Noir EdP
    - Dior Homme Sport

It's actually a pretty versatile line up as well. You would have a decent wardrobe with these.

I should just sell my 95 other bottles and stick to these. Life would be so much simpler.

For me Chanel, Dior, YSL, and Mugler are of little consequence and these are the one's I've seen at Sephora or Macys:

    Armani Mania
    Armani Code Ultimate
    Kenneth Cole Mankind
    Terre D'Hermes EDT
    Terre D'Hermes Eau Tres Fraiche
    Tom Ford Extreme
    Tom Ford for Men
    Tom Ford Grey Vetiver
Tom Ford Noir EDT (I've sampled both this and the EDP and definitely prefer this one without question)
    Versace Pour Homme

    Honorable mentions:

    Armani Code Sport
    Cartier Eau de Cartier Concentree
Chanel Platinum Egoiste (this might get substituted into the top 10 as it's the only Chanel that I really like)
    Versace Eros

    1. Bleu de chanel (paris made version) some say there is no difference. I care to differ. Some scoff at this stuff. I find it to be a wonderful swiss army knife.

    2. Pure malt. - nuff said

    3. Dior homme/intense- Either is fine with me. Does it smell like makeup? Yes the most manly delicious makeup ever.

    4. Acqua Di gio - Not really because I love it, but because its the only scent I have ever worn that women always compliment it and always know what it is and think you smell great

    5. Mugler A*men. - Love it, hate it it really doesnt matter. It has a following for a reason and few fragrances beat its performance.

    6. Dior Fahrenheit - Its unique powerful and timeless. To me it will never smell dated.

    7. Le Male- I hate the stuff, but it has stood the test of time for reasons that defy my logic and it deserves props for that.

    8. 1 million - Another scent that makes me gag. But millions of clubbers cant be wrong can they?

    9. Obsession - I HATE the opening of this one. But the drydown? sublime. I really dont even like admitting that I like a CK fragrance. But it deserves it

    10. Mugler cologne - So underrated its shocking. Plus its a ballsy fragrance literally.

This is going to be a tough one because it will depend upon which stores are available.
I cant do 10, but I'll give you some I think of highly.

    Likely available:

Kiton - Men (I think this is in Bloomingdales, easy to wear Chypre)
Hermes - Terre d'Hermes Parfum (Steamy, citric mineral spring)
Prada - Amber Pour Homme Intense (Myrrh + Soap)
Gucci - Pour Homme II - (Tobacco, Violet Leaf, Black Tea)

    Possibly Available:

Guerlain - Homme L'eau Boisee (Lime, Dewy Grass, easy going vetiver)
Comme des Garcons - Wonderwood - (Light, fluffy sawdust)
Lalique - White (Green Lemon Leaf, Pepper, Tamarind)
Pal Zileri - Sartoriale (Just blind buy this one while you can if you like Sandalwood + A little Violet Leaf)

    Songe d'un Bois dEte
    Balenciaga pour Homme

Vintage don't fit the thread though, because I'm asking for the best fragrances you could go to a brick & mortar store today to smell. There's no way to go to a local store to smell vintage Yatagan.

Yup. I realize Tom Ford private blends can be considered designer by some, but they can also be considered niche, and at that point, the conversation skews to things like Tobacco Vanille and Bois d'Argent... and it reinforces the comments often made about how basenotes writes off designer options. So, I thought I'd create this thread to do the opposite and shine a little light on the best of the designers that are easily available to be sniffed and sampled locally.

Nice idea. Sticking with the OP's guidelines of chain department stores such as Macy's, Dillard's, Sephora, Ulta, Kohl's, Belk's, etc, without going too upscale into the Nordstrom's, Neiman's, Etc..

No particular order: (keeping this list strictly to fragrances that are always accessible right now through the above listed department stores)
    Spicebomb
    Acqua di Gio
    La Nuit de L'Homme
    Fahrenheit
    Dior Homme
    Bulgari Aqua Marine
    Prada Amber
    Azzaro pour Homme
    Drakkar Noir
    Cool Water

    Honorable mentions:
    CK Be
    212 for men
Hanae Mori H.M. (Not as easy to find, but still available at most department stores)
Burberry London (Not as easy to find, but still available at Sephora)
Bulgari Black (Arguably discontinued, but just saw this at Sephora 2 weeks ago)
Lacoste L 12 12 White (One of my favorite citrus fragrances, would probably make my top 10, but longevity is poor)
1 Million (Love this one, but a bit harder to wear, so it doesn't make my top 10)
    My Ultimate Top 5:

    Fahrenheit (1988)
    Le Vetiver Itasca (2010)
    Arpege pour Homme (2005)

    Classical by Anat Fritz
    Tzora by Anat Fritz
    Terre d'Hermès PP
    Bentley for Men Intense
    Avignon by CdG
    Javanese Patchouli by Zegna
Or Black (current) by Pascal Morabito
    Costume National Homme
    Havana by Aramis
    JHL by Aramis

All are designer releases currently available in stores, though many are in only a few...

Edit: If removing any "Luxe" lines from designers that feature regular lines (as is mentioned later in the thread), then Javanese Patchouli is out...

Leaving this additional composition to make the list:

    Bel Ami by Hermès
