Default Difference between new and old Rive Gauche?

Are they very different? What's the main difference between vintage YSL Rive Gauche, and the new glass bottle Rive Gauche? Is the "classic collection" just a limited collection, or will it be permanent?

Own the original release and have smelled the more recent one that's out there. On my skin. longevity is the same. I wouldn't say it smells identical to my nose, but close enough to know that they're both Rive Gauche. Just my experience.

I have never smelt the new version - but other trusted noses on BN have said that the difference is substantial to search for the old tin can...

I own both, and they smell extremely similar to my nose. I think a lot of people complain about the difference in *price* between the old "tin can" version and the new glass bottle - up to twice as expensive in some cases (the tin can version was heavily discounted towards the end).

Long story short: if you can find the "tin can" version at a lower $/ml then (obviously) buy it. Think twice (or more) before paying more $/ml for a tin can version than a glass bottle...

    Just my 0.02$ (per ml)

I too would say they are very similar.

Best way I can describe it - vintage (tin can) feels a tad lighter and fresher, the new (little square bottle) feels a tad deeper and richer.

My personal preference is for the vintage - but they are SO very similar and close to each other, I will not be be upset the least bit when I can no longer find any more of the 'tin cans' at a reasonable price and end up having to switch over to the new formula.

Prices for tin cans on ebay have about doubled in the last year, and they are still cheaper per ml than the glass bottles. YSL has lost the plot.

Old one feels wider, more depth.

High street retailers around me have it for around 70/80ml. As I recall it relaunched even higher than that. I'm starting to see it pop up on discounter websites for 60.

For comparison, I've scored the old packaging for as little as 45/125ml, but that was over a year ago.

guess the difference is very minimal.. maybe the only cube which doesn't stray far from the original..

    Grab it!

First, and foremost, this is a great (in my opinion) fragrance.

And secondly, given the rapidly developing hysteria (fueled in part by threads like this one), a spare 125 ml can or two of this will always be easy to sell or trade advantageously.

Finally, the can is opaque so it's that much easier to store in good condition.

The "Tin can" older version is really fantastic! And worth of purchase, now as it's still available. This thread worked as a reminder, I sprayed 3 full sprays as my SOTD. Smells really, really good.

People seem to be forgetting that there is the vintage tin can version that drives some women wild, and the reformulated tin can version which smells almost the same, but which doesn't get the same female reaction.

    The vintage has
    "YVESSAINTLAURENT
    Parfum"
written on the back of the can.

the non-vintage tin can is missing the "Parfum".

Shame that one can't look through the plastic and paper wrapping to see what is written in the back of the can.

I literally just purchased a tin can 75ml off of eBay last week. I got the "Parfums" version as well. It was cheaper to buy it than the glass bottle version. By quite a bit still.

Best advice is probably, look around and find the best price and get it there. My bet is you'll be able to find the vintage stuff cheaper than the new release anyway.

The biggest difference is that the old can contains Oakmoss (2003) and the new one from La collection does not.
IMO, the current one is smooth, creamy and understated while the old can feels scratchy due to oakmoss (in my guess).

Otherwise, there is no big difference.
Dont forget that both perfumes are composed by the same perfumer. He def. knows how to relaunch the original one without losing its soul.

My personal opinion: If you can find the original one easily at acceptable prices, go for it. Otherwise, do not waste your money/time to find the original one.
