Default This hobby is so niche

I was really into electronic dance music (still am) back in the day. I had turntables, records and was producing music. I lived it hardcore for at least 10 yrs. My life revolved around it. We were the kids who new who produced the tracks and remixes that the dj was playing. Just like we know who the perfumers are behind our fragrances. The analogy would be someone talking about how great dior homme is, but they don't know who olivier polge is. Another example is someone who refers to all dance music as techno. This used to drive me crazy. It's not techno. It's trance, house, or drum and bass...etc. Techno is it's own genre. Fragrance is the same way, different genres and producers. At least with dance music, you could go to raves and meet like minded people and talk about the artists and music. On the other hand, this hobby is way out there. Even people who wear fragrance all the time and have a lot of bottles don't know jack. Sometimes I'll get a little excited and start talking about my new favorite and people just look at me like I'm crazy. I told my friend who was really into the music scene with me that I wanted to start making perfume. This made absolutely nooooo sense to him, even after I explained how it was the same way we felt about people who didn't understand our passion for dance music. Since then I've just been keeping my mouth shut, unless someone is really interested. I just wish I lived by scent bar.....hahaha

I know what you mean. Sometimes i try explaining my passion for perfumes and that i wish to launch my own niche line in the future, and people often respond with, "But you have to be a celebrity to do that!" Obviously they're talking about celebriscents, which drives me nuts.

A lot of people are only interested in mainstream shit, be it music or perfume or whatever. They don't want to think about it, they just want to consume it. They switch on the radio and listen to the crap that is broadcasted, they buy perfumes just because of a half-naked celebrity who leads them to believe that they will be "sexy" when they wear it. A lot of people are terrifyingly shallow and don't know shit about anything.

I agree. The perfume scene really needs more drugs to fire it up. Hallucinogens and stimulants could really do wonders for the industry

Of course, we would need to take it back underground, to the equivalent of illegal raves, to take back power from IFRA and others with commercial interests in the scene.
    1. No, never blind buy (I do, but do as I say, not as I do. I'm taking no responsibility for your fragrance gambling).
    2. Get them both. You're a Basenoter and you know you're going to end up purchasing them both eventually.
    3. Yes, it has been reformulated.
    4. Looking for a signature scent? You've come to the wrong place.

I understand your point OP. Still when I first stumbled into BN I myself thought "what is this, they are crazy..." But I kept on coming back and now... I have 100 bottles, mostly niche... So I changed my mind or now I'm crazy too.

Thinking that any hobby is destined to become, in a certain way, niche if one really gets familiar with it and acquires above average, "beyond mainstream" knowledge about it.

I've always felt like that with pretty much any hobby/interest (I was a dj/producer too by the way), but as Ken wrote above, I guess that is normal when you really into a scene - I mean normal to be much more knowledgeable & discerning than other people.

That's awesome. I hope you get there. I made some really good friends back in the day because of the music. People I would never have been friends with. It was awesome to talk to someone who was excited as yourself. I just want to learn more about it through creating it. All my favorite scents at the moment are independent niche houses like Bouge. I would love to know what Antonio did to get started. What steps did he take? I think both him and josh from slumberhouse are relatively young.

What were you producing? I was making a lot of trance and house. I actually made some really good tracks. I don't have the passion for it like I use to, but I use to spend hours on my computer working on tracks.

It's hard sometimes to find like minded people with the same passion and enthusiasm but they're out there.
Remember that while it is perfectly acceptable to criticize the content of a post - criticizing the poster is not.
Mean spirited, nasty, snide, sarcastic, hateful, and rude individuals on Basenotes don't warrant or deserve my or other Basenoters' acknowledgement or respect.

That wasn't what I thought. I've always done specialty horticulture, where those in the know are knowledgeable about all the various named varieties of things, and the names of the different people who've hybridized them. And are willing to pay some serious money for new things that come on the market.

So when I first got here, I was like "Oh, another one of those things" and got right in.

With the plant work, now I'm a hybridizer myself, with some developing credibility, and as with this hobby, when the commercial grower I'm associated with finally gets my creations to market, they'll pimp my name and try and squeeze every penny they can from them. 15 years ago, desirable new introductions in my area of work were $50, and now they can be $300, so the play on exclusivity is the same. As well as the idea that in our current era, the sky's the limit when it comes to pricing.
