Sahm Sandal Oil by Habzoud: it hits the bull's eye even being a 'raw fresh' sandalwood scent.
The moment I smelt the applicator, copper flashed in my mind. But, after a few minutes, its Mysore nature started swelling forward. Beauuuuutiful! Its aroma suits the word ELEGANT.

Caramelized or not, the scent profile is an enigma for me. Ceylon copper, Mysore copper, Mysore. No problem as the scent is outstanding.

It seems to be extremely fresh with a lot uneven edges. Aging is a must to enjoy sandal sobriety and gravity. If used as base for attar making, different intrinsic shades of the oil would play a vital role.

Sultan Rose Attar by Ensar Oud.

Quietly and subtly released into the market about 7 days ago. EO once again proves he is the Master of oud based perfumes. There is nothing complex about this fragrance - no dramatic transitions, no tricks. What you get is a composition containing some of the finest natural, wild ouds (Hindi/China distilled), rose oils, and sandalwoods, elegantly blended.
Took me less than two days of sampling to decide it was FB worthy.

    “Cambodi Qadeem” Ajmal late 90’s

This was $50/3ml at the time. Really reminds me of resin bubbling on wood chips. Not your sweet candy Cambodian- more earthy, salty, dark chocolate type sweetness on top of a scintillating wood heart. Some faint cola-like notes hiding in there. Nice stuff

Oudline km super ateeq. An unusual resinous Kalimantan... kunroku resin and dry woody earth in the top note, and a heart not which is like a glowing ember of deep oily tangy cola, and overall a very dignified and clean profile.

I’m wearing Khalifa Hind and Amir Crassna from AgarAssam. Excellent Hindis. Khalifa is powerful and Amir Crassna has subtle dried fruits and peppery sandalwood notes. Excellent layering combo.

Hindi oud is the most challenging and funky of all the ouds. Depending on the producer it can have overtones of stinky feet, cheese, burnt notes, manure. Most definitely not an oud for novices. If you smelled a well distilled Vietnamese or Borneo oil, you would be feeling differently I suspect.

Yeah this is spot on! Chinese, Cambodian and Thais are straight up beautiful. Zaza Zen is a great introduction to oud. Hindi’s are extremely challenging even when they’re done really well.

Yeah, I always recommend beginners to start with Cambodian.

Sheba attar by Rising Phoenix. Very nice with Taif Rose and natural civet, ambergris, musk, sandalwood and a touch of Cambodi Oud. It’s nice but I think I slightly prefer Sheikh Khalifa Attar with the more intense Hindi Oud.

This thing is absolutely amazing - the tea/citrus character just sings above the rich, spicy-sweet (and slightly animalic [and characteristically Chinese]) woodiness is underneath.

What do you mean by "old oud scent"?
Are you referring to old traditional distilling methods?

By “old oud” I am referring to what I imagine to be a hallmark scent of oil distilled from mature agarwood as opposed to plantations or wild-cultivated oud. I am really not experienced enough to say for sure that this scent is a hallmark of this kind of wood but I have never experienced in in plantation oud of any kid. Adjectives are hard for me to come up with: It is a deep resinous oily buzz, sometimes with cola and slight lime oil top notes but it does not always have this aspect. A little spicy / peppery, mellow, somehow giving a sense of old wood. I have smelled it in good oils from quite different regions and (based on scent) species of agarwood. I smell this in the imperial oud super hoi an from Vietnam (one of my favorites), as well as this oudline Malay (which is very different in profile than the Vietnam oil) and some top shelf ouds from oriscent like the old Oud Royale, and also in some other aged dark maroke oils. This was distilled recently but the oil smells like it was distilled from really nice quality wood. Again this is speculation to some degree since I’m just experiencing the stuff as a consumer in my collection is pretty small.

I went to bed wearing Naga Layyen from Ensar. Deep resinous plums and peppered incense with the signature Cambodi dry down. There’s definitely a stage where this smells like resinous burning sandalwood. I woke up with the most beautiful wafts of incense coming from my hair haha.

Today it’s super hoi an from imperial oud. One of the best sinensis oils I have had the chance to smell. I diluted a bit down in ethanol - just a few drops per 10 ml - and put it in a roll on bottle.

In this way I enjoy certain aspects of the scent daily without really depleting my supply much. 3 ml does not last long at all if you are swiping on a daily basis. This oil performs nicely in diluted form - I get notes that remind me of gently heated aloeswood slivers, especially like high end Vietnamese agarwood. Reminds me of expensive Japanese incense and I am pretty jazzed I get to walk around in a light cloud of this aroma almost daily.

Thanks for elaborating Mr.P. I think I know the smell you are describing and in my opinion it is more from the distillation techniques used than the wood itself, of course to some extent it shows the quality of the wood as I don't believe this can be done with bunk wood, but I may be wrong. I too have smelled it in some of the old "legends" and it lends itself to the concept of aged or old wood. I have however smelt oils from high quality old trees that has been distilled differently and they do not have this smell.
