Trying out my order from Ensaroud: I've got the Nhek 1976, its a strong busty Koh Kong deep woods, dry pine, a light chalk smell, and hints of barnyard in the background. I could mistake this for the backwoods in montana or the Northwest, hits close to home for something so far away. I am also trying out my samples of the Peoples Sultan and Green Papua. The Sultan starts out with orris and wood and tranfars over time to a powdery cedar (just a little bit) with floral aspects i can't define maybe a slight apple blossom and cinnamon. Reminds me of Tarrywile Park near my house when I was growing up in Connecticut, definitely buying this for the nostalgia later. The Green Papua gets more interesting everytime I smell it; It came on first as a indestinguishable green and settled into a green ceylon cinnamon spice layered over the clay from a mitti attar. The sweetness from the ceylon coupled with the clay and forest green make this one really nice. More subtle than powerful but not delicate either

Agreed, I think I might need more than a sample. Wearing Tigerwood 1995 along side Tigerwood Royale today, I much prefer the lighter woodier TW1995. I pick up on Virginian cedarwood facets in it. Sheer oudiness with not much else - it's all wood all the way, which is why I like it so much.

Over the past few days, more sampling:

Midori Qi (Ensar) A truly wonderful straight-up Borneo. A little fruity with cinnamon-like aromatic spice on an incense/laquered woody base. Straight-laced and easy to wear.

Oud Royale (the current Sri Lankan OR, also Ensar) I like Sri Lankan walla patta, love Suriranka Senkoh, but this one is not for me.

Oud Dhul Q (also Ensar) from the new batch. Smoky! In the opening the smoke is ashy, almost like richly sweetened tobacco ash, in a good way of course, but wow, what a lot of smoke! An extremely thick oil too, this stuff lasts forever. The smoke dies down but leaves a lingering resinous presence, then it's rich woods, vegetal/herbal floral tones, a pinch of pipe tobacco, which goes on and on and on. All of those aspects somehow conspire to smell like smoky molasses, which interestingly enough it is nearly the consistency of. And did I mention it lasts forever? One of the longest-lasting oils I've tried to date.

another totally unique oil. so nuanced, so layered.

    - - - Updated - - -

oud of the night last night was AA kiyosumi: the more stripped down, piercing, higher toned vietnamese release by taha. kenmei goes on mustache but kiyosumi on the wrist. the scent is very similar: condensed milk, vanilla, spearmint, classic vietnam bitterness and a different kind of medicinal than chinese oils. and then on evolution there is the balsam sap note but the energy and radiation is very different than kenmei. overall when i crave that green oil kyara scent or the note of burning some sick kyara based japanese incense upright, this oil scrathes that itch perfectly.

oud of this morning: sri pada IO. a relative great bargain of a sri lankan with deeper, fuller, darker, cinnamon, cardamon, mango peel, thick dark clover honey with mild but noticeable saline oceanic note. is doesnt have any smoky notes. no pot smell. no fishy seaweedy notes. but also absent or very very dialed down is that incense note that is abundant in ORSL. for the price though this oil is wicked.

    Yesterday was a sinensis day:

    China Sayang - Ensar Oud
    &
    Viet Zephyr - Imperial Oud

Today it's crazy windy (trees down everywhere, no power) and pouring rain. Felt right for some Sultani 1990 earlier on and now wearing Abdullah's/Mellifluence Tsuga Musk (original batch) to bed.

Found a sample I received a couple of years ago from Feel Oud. The label said Thai Papua.

Not as medicinal as other ouds I've tried. Not animalic, but somehow reminiscent of clean skin. Very expansive and uplifting, if that makes any sense. Slight leatheriness to it, but my inexperienced nose seems to get that from all ouds. Aged leathe with maybe a hint of prunes.
    1. No, never blind buy (I do, but do as I say, not as I do. I'm taking no responsibility for your fragrance gambling).
    2. Get them both. You're a Basenoter and you know you're going to end up purchasing them both eventually.
    3. Yes, it has been reformulated.
    4. Looking for a signature scent? You've come to the wrong place.

Agreed, classic Borneo. My sample size is basically gone, I hope they offer it in larger sizes at some point. I don't have a Borneo in my quiver yet, this would be a good candidate.
