Default Why are Perfumes and Colognes so popular?

The marketing of perfumes, colognes, aftershaves, and other scented body care products is based on sex and the power to control others. In other words, people are subtly promised that they will be more sexually attractive or sexually desirable. It is further suggested that people can be invincible and they can get whatever they want — that is — if they wear a certain fragrance.

How many of the following statements have you seen? How many do you believe? You may not realize that all of these statements have been carefully marketed to get us to change our beliefs, our habits and the way we spend money. A hundred years ago, few people would have believed these types of statements. Yet, today, these lies and half-truths are considered to be facts of life for the modern woman or man, all because of marketing campaigns.

The natural scent of the human body is unpleasant.
Being clean is not good enough, we must put on a fragrance to prove that we are clean.
Clean clothes must have a distinct fragrance to reassure us that they are clean.
A clean house must have a noticeable fragrance to demonstrate cleanliness.
The fragrance of a house is part of the decor.
Each person should have a distinct scent that defines their individuality.
Getting dressed also includes applying perfume or cologne.
Prosperous people demonstrate their success by the expense of their scent.
You will have more power in the workplace when you wear a commanding fragrance.
You will feel more sexy and get what you want from men or women through the power of a scent.
    Beautiful people smell beautiful.
Scent is essential for attracting someone of the opposite sex.
    Scent magnifies sensual pleasure.

Well, I'm certainly no friend of the industry part of the perfume industry, and some isolated points, e.g. about an ideologized obsession with hygiene in US culture, are pertinent. Most of the statements made here however are patently misinformed and misinforming both in terms of the history and chemistry of perfume. As a whole, this is unfortunately nothing more than a saddening account of someone trying to vent their frustration and anger about a personal tragedy on some sinister other. In this case it is perfume, in others it is chemtrails or freemasons. That kind of conspirational thinking is a sign of mental instability and I would urgently advise seeking professional counseling.

The list of marketing BS is spot on; that is exactly how the advertising and marketing industry thinks about the promotion of fragrances and frgranced products. It has been shown time after time that a specific fragrance can be the deciding factor when having a choice of two very similar products. That's why cleaning products and laundry products are fragranced (well one of the reasons).

The accompanying article with the hysterical title was, of course, crap.

A lot of people just find fragrances intoxicating. Plain and simple.

Agreed. It's aromatherapy for me, plain and simple. All the ad campaigns are meaningless verging on campy to me.

..oh and I love the smells of the human body. When it comes to making love, I want my partner to smell like sex, not perfume. Sweat is more a sexual scent to me than any fragrance I've ever smelled. ...then again, I'm a man who loves men. I think that makes a difference (in general)
It is true that fish stink. It is also true that the river is
beautiful. But the river would be beautiful despite the fish. What
    is noxious remains so.

That is not to say that sh*t is not useful when buried in the wheat
field. Bread made from the field tastes sweet, wine from the arbor
sweetest. All things serve a purpose, but that is no reason to
glorify what is abominable. A man must still watch where he walks
    and keep his sandals clean.

Everything culturally interesting is really a contrivance. If you didn’t have it, you wouldn’t have modern culture at all: no artifice, no city planning, no media, no culturally acceptable parameters of what is beautiful etc. If you look at it will an objective view, but one within the scope of creativity, skill and nuance, then advertising and general bombast is put in it’s perspective.

Multiple Chemical Sensitivity Syndrome, otherwise known as Modern Neurosis number 48.
    Number of sprays N = {(6-L)x(7-P)}/2 (where L = longevity and P = projection, on a scale of 1-5).

    Agreed.

Also, I think that whether the statements in the OP are true or not depends on the public's level of awareness. There are people who really think that fragrance will take them places where they cannot go on their own. I was probably one of those people until I realized that fragrance is more about personal pleasure and personality/fashion/style than anything else. The more the public is made aware of this truth, the better their choices will be and the more rational/accurate fragrance ads will become.

Fragrance has been around for millennia and I know that I feel great when my wife wears a fragrance I like. Fragrance IS part of getting nicely dressed. That's why they call it "wearing a fragrance".
