Interesting... thanks for the heads up. I really liked the oud and leather scents, but this one doesn't sound as compelling to me.

Musky marine notes? Don't exactly know what to make of that--in an amber scent!?--but it sounds kind of discordant. My guess is that the prominence of these "musky marine notes" will make or break the scent (although I have to say, musky marine amber sounds just... yuck).

But the other ones in the line were surprisingly good, so I'm looking forward to sampling!

It's not an amber scent, it's ambergris. Hence the marine notes.

Interesting, if that's true, that makes more sense. But I thought "ambra" meant "amber" (e.g. this mish-mash of labdanum / vanilla / benzoin, not the fossilized sap)? Ambergris (which presumably would be synthetic at any rate) has a different smell than what usually counts as "amber" right? But what you said makes sense if they mean "ambergris" instead of "amber" with the name.

And if it does refer to synthetic ambergris, then that makes me even more hesitant, since that note is not my favorite... but I'll try it anyways, maybe it will surprise me.

Not sure if you're serious... someone with almost 18,000 post must be quite an experienced basehead by now.

But back on topic, can't wait for this, love ambergris

If it's ambergris and not amber, I'm in. Blind buy. But if it's amber, then I'll pass, or at least won't make any decisions until I get to sample it first. Too many perfumers interchange the names amber (fossilized tree resin) and ambergris (sperm whale vomit) as if they were the same ingredient, so sometimes it's hard to predict what the fragrance may actually smell like. Amber and ambergris are two completely different ingredients, with vastly different scent profiles.

The name of this one suggests amber, but the notes ("nuances of musky marine notes") suggest ambergris. I'm hoping it's the later...

Very curious if it indeed is ambergris.. very curious to smell their take on ambergris, esp after their excellent takes on Oud and Leather.

    Available in April?! Nice.

IIRC, nobody guessed ambergris in that thread where everyone was speculating as to what the featured note might be. Someone did come in and say what it was (insider info), but I can't recall it.

My SA specifically said it would be amber, but I imagine he was confused by the name. I'd be confused by the name myself to be honest, and would naturally assume amber rather than ambergris.

The notes remind me too much of Milliseme Imperial so this will probably be a pass for me.

Do try it out before marking it a pass
ADP does a good spin on their ingredient series.

    LOL wat?

You know that just from this?: "Colonia Ambra is an aromatic, complex scent, with nuances of musky marine notes."

I wish I could know what things smelled like based on one note...

I will certainly give it a try before making it a pass, I'm just guessing based on the description :P.

I do love the ADP series, but the "Leather" and "Oud" are my least favorites. This sounds more fresh, so I will probably like it more than the other two in any case.

It's partly based on the notes lol. The ADP range has space for a musky, fresh oceanic fragrance like Millesimal Imperial. I'm quite surprised they haven't done one yet actually, and a scent based around ambergris would be the perfect opportunity to introduce such a fragrance.

ambergris is often referred to as "silver amber".

" ambergris (sperm whale vomit) "

My understanding is that ambergris does not come out of the mouth but out of the other end - sort of pre-fecal, I guess.

Ambre gris= grey amber, while the fossil resin is ambre jaune - yellow amber.

Well, how it comes out of the whale, that I think has been somewhat of a mystery. Wikipedia and other sources mention both "The sperm whale usually vomits these" and "Ambergris is usually passed in the fecal matter"... Either way, it is something that comes out of the sperm whales one way or another, and we can leave it at that. ;-) The point was, ambergris and amber are two different materials, and it gets awfully confusing when perfumers interchange these two names as if they were referring to the same thing. Amber and ambergris smell vastly different, so I'm not sure why so many people interchange these names... It's like confusing vanilla with mint - they have very distinct attributes and are definitely not the same ingredient - no one would try to mix these two up... yet people interchange "amber" and "ambergris" all the time.

Well put! Amber and ambergris smell completely different, so it's confusing when the names are mixed. This new ADP does just that, as does Roja Dove's Amber Aoud for instance.

According to Christopher Kemp, author of Floating Gold (and a BN member), ambergris is not vomited. It is either excreted or liberated from the intestines after the dead whale's body decays. See here:

    http://press.uchicago.edu/books/exce..._floating.html

Anyway, concerning this new release: if it is ambergris (probably synthetic) I will certainly try it. But it wouldn't be the first time if what was described as ambergris in the ad copy turns out to be amber. We shall see.
