Hello by Lionel Ritchie (women's version). So terrible it actually made me laugh a little. Smelled like pineapple Jell-O smothered in vanilla whipped cream.

This is a damn fine vetiver frag. Solid stuff. Brighter at first, but then the more rooty/smokey aspect comes out after around ~10-20 mins, it's not SUPER prominent, but it's noticeable. If you find the opening too citrus-y, especially when smelling up close (I guess a bergamot presenting kind of like grapefruit? IMO), just wait a few mins.

The papyrus might help from being too fresh as well, not sure. I like this type of vetiver frag. I'm not too much into the super bright fresh stuff - I mean that's fine, but I want some rooty too! Which this one does.

    Well done.

Edit: This kind of reminds me of the drydown to Eau Sauvage Parfum, but minus the myrrh & sweetness, and perhaps a bit more natural smelling.

Not bad for a vetiver, I prefer Chanel Sycomore and Dior Vetiver.

You should try to get your hands on some Dior Vetiver. It's really good.

    • By Kilian Black Phantom •

By Kilian (or is it Kilian Paris now?) has been recommended to me plenty of times, so in one of my first sample orders I included Black Phantom...I didn't like it, but given the status it had, I waited a while to give it another shot.

Based on the notes, I should love this, but my perception of this fragrance steers quite a bit away from what the listed notes suggest (in the first hour). I get a lot of the sweetness, the caramel, the rum, but I also get a hint of green, a bit of saltiness and most of all, liquorice. Almost like salmiak. What I unfortunately don't get as much as others seem to get, is the coffee note. The opening is reminiscent of Carner's Ambar Del Sur for me. I wouldn't say the scent is bad at all, but I don't really love it and because it projects really strong, it starts to border on being unpleasant after a while.
The drydown is where this fragrance is starting to win me over. The sweetness starts to tone down a bit (as well as the projection), the booziness remains and is in my opinion the best part of the scent. The green and salty bits that I picked up on, completely disappear, and in place, there's nuts (almond and heliotrope) and creamy sandalwood. The fragrance becomes much more cozy to me and turns into something akin to a sweet pastry, next to a cup of instant caramel coffee (usually those kinds of drinks barely taste like coffee, so no, I don't get more coffee in the drydown). By this point, this comes closer to a rum injected Maison Francis Kurkdjian's Grand Soir, which I absolutely love. The liquorice-esque scent lingers around for a while, but it's not as strong as in the opening.
Longevity is really good, although by the time it turns into a real skin scent, most of the depth and complexity is gone and I get more of a generic sweetness. Overall, I'm not fully sold on the first hour of the wear, but I 'get' it now. Would I be inclined to run out to get a bottle...There are a couple of gourmands high on my wishlist, like Grand Soir and Lubin's Korrigan, which also has a nice booziness. I think Black Phantom isn't ready to skip the line yet, but it definitely made the ever-growing list •

Went on a niche sampling spray today and tested for the first time in one of the few niche stores in my town several Carons, of whom Yatagan and l'Anarchiste impressed me the most, while the highlights (from a personal viewpoint alone) by other niche/exclusive houses included so far Frack Boclet Tobacco, Houbigant Fougere Royale, strangely also quite popular Amouage Bracken and Akkad by Lubin, in no particular order

Creed Cedre Blanc. hated the first 3-5 seconds. such a strong chemical smell. really liked it through the next hour or so. it's now dried down. it's nice, but since i sprayed it on the back of my hand, it's a bit too 'much'

i'm happy with it though. another different scent for my collection

Went to a great boutique today and tried a bunch. Obviously most of my impressions will be of the opening on a tester strip, so take with a grain of salt:

French Lover/Bois d’Orage: Love it, bought it. I really wish they’d just called it Stormwood, but hey, can’t complain too much. As is well documented, this comes off with mossy grey forest imagery that starts painting in a picture in your mind the moment you spray it on. Bittergreen, loamy, foggy, ethereal and beautiful. Much more than the sum of its parts.

Serge Lutens Vetiver Oriental: Disappointing. The opening was overpowering, cloying and miles off what I would have liked. Didn’t get any sharp or smoky Vetiver coming through either.

Chergui: Fantastic, decadent opening without being cloying. Shame I didn’t get a chance to try it on skin because I’m sure the tobacco dry down will be magnificent. I have my eye on this for winter.

MFK Acqua Universalis Forte: Really nice, but I struggle to justify the price point.

Frederic Malle Bigarade Concetree: With this one I was thinking, “What’s the point if you already have Concetre d’Orange Vert?” ... or one of any other great citrus that retails for far less, really. Nice, but I don’t see the point.

Frederic Malle L’eau d’Hiver: Too transparent to be worth a bottle. Beautifully constructed, but hardly practical.

Byredo Sundazed: I am coming back for this one. Initial impressions were it’s magnificent, lovely opening, and I really want to see how its jasmine develops on skin,

Byredo Bal D’Afrique: Need a wear or two to work it out. It could just be too sweet for what I’m looking for. But for a fruity Vetiver, it’s on point.

    • AMOUAGE OPUS VI •

The most anticipated of the Opus line for me, so I was excited to sample it. Opus VI has the strongest, loudest opening I've encountered in a while, rivalled perhaps by Amouage's notorious beast, Interlude Men. As with Interlude, I don't enjoy it. It may be fine if you spray this on and you go outdoors, but having it on your skin to sample, inside your house, is simply too much in my opinion. The scent is not unpleasant, although a bit of a curveball to me. There's a strong, sweet, animalic accord in Opus VI, that I didn't expect based on the listed notes, but I think the labdanum has a big part in that. Leather, incense, warmth and a hint of an orange or neroli-like citrus is what I pick up on. The incense and spice mixture is clearly reminscent of several other Amouage's that I have tried. There's also the same szechuan pepper that's in Journey Men, which I think has a lot in common with Opus VI, but it's much softer. Whereas Journey seemed like Interlude's tiny brother, Opus VI takes a scent close to Journey and amps it all the way back up.

Where Opus VI starts to differentiate itself, is with the greens. Some wafts reminded me of Parfums de Rosine's Eloge Du Vert, which features a prominent green pepper note. Opus IV uses some notes that give it a slight herbal or medicinal touch in the base. Somehow this felt fresher and cleaner in the late drydown as well.

Personally, I'd take Journey Man over Opus VI (or Interlude) anyday, but if you're really into the scent profile and you want to project more and constantly be aware of the scent cloud around you, this is a winner •

Guerlain Eau Imperiale -> Loved it! Was aware of it notorious short longevity, so I didn't count that in as a factor for judging this fragrance. As far as EdC's go this is as good as it gets to my nose. The opening is a burst of all kinds of citrus and neroli that is just heavenly. After a minute or 10-15 it dries down to a skin scent of soft lemon/neroli on a bed of tonka. After two hours the scent was almost completely gone. I can see myself ending up with a bottle of this.

Guerlain Apres l'Ondee -> A beautiful soft floral feminine fragrance to my nose. I really see how people compare this to impressionist painting. It comes across very soft, innocent and serene to me. I heard rumors about this being discontinued, so I wanted to at least have smelled this one before it maybe disappears.

Guerlain Vol de Nuit -> Another Guerlain Classic and another winner. I would place this as a rounder and softer sister of Jicky and Mouchoir de Monsieur. I think the three all share some similarities, but all have their own character. Vol de Nuit has a very nice bright/green/earthy opening, which I assume is the galbanum (not a note I'm really familiar with), and dries down to a introspective, soft, powdery and melancholic drydown that is to die for (just as Jicky and MdM). Only "problem" I have with this, is that I would like it to have a better longevity.

Annick Goutal Bois d'Hadrien -> I didn't really like this one. The opening had a really nice citrus, but soon the fragrance went into the wrong direction for me. To my nose it quickly became a very modern gourmandish sour/sweet fragrance that I really didn't like. Also not something I expected from Goutal.

Annick Goutal Encens Flamboyant -> Very intriguing. This must be one of the most dry and austere fragrances I have ever tried. This is not your incense with (sweet) resins, but for me really captivated the smell of old churches as I knew them from childhood. I guess this could work fantastic when you are in a sere and introspective mood.

I'm trying Tom Ford Extreme today for the first time, and I'm on the fence. I love the scent, but I can already tell it has no performance or sillage. I sprayed an hour ago and the scent is already disappearing to my nose. A shame, because it's a unique frag. I'll keep an open mind on this...
