Smile Hello from a new member

Hi, I’m Lee. I’ve been interested in fragrance for as far back as I can remember. My parents believed that getting dressed includes an appropriate scent, and I took that idea to heart early on.

I joined Basenotes because I’d like to be able to discuss and compare info on fragrances, particularly vintage ones. The constant reformulation is a weirdly upsetting issue. It never occurred to me growing up that one day I wouldn’t be able to replace the scents I loved… I got into the habit of using them with abandon, and still find it very hard to save some for a rainy day.

Anyway, I look forward to meeting you all on the boards! The depth of knowledge and experience I’ve found here is impressive; I’ll try to contribute how I can.

My fragrance history, for whoever’s interested:

Nenuco (I still carry around their wipes in my handbag)
    Gal Lavanda Inglesa
    Myrurgia 1916
Diorissimo (when I was little my mother would let me dab this on from time to time)
Paco Rabanne Metal (first scent I bought for myself)
    Guy Laroche Fidji
    Cacharel Anaïs Anaïs
    Chanel No. 19
    Lancôme Magie Noire
    Yves Saint Laurent Rive Gauche

    Guy Laroche Drakkar Noir
    Montana Parfum de Peau
    Robert Piguet Fracas
    Chanel Coco
    Felissimo 56
L’Artisan Parfumeur Thé pour un Été
    Jean Paul Gaultier Fragile
Frederic Malle Angélique sous la Pluie
    L’Artisan Parfumeur Premier Figuier
    Frederic Malle Bigarade
    Serge Lutens Fleurs d’Oranger
    Hermès Eau d'Orange Verte
    Hermès Osmanthe Yunnan
Victorio & Lucchino Agua de Rocío
    Frederic Malle Une Rose

Underlined are scents I still wear, older ones in pre-90s formulations only (with the exception of 1916, which is still good off the shelf).

Welcome to Basenotes. That's a nice list of fragrances. Vintage fragrance is always a discussion of interest here.

    Welcome to basenotes, metalee!

l also have a bottle of the original Magie Noire. That & Diorissimo are prime examples to me of the disastrous results of reformulation.

The current formulation of Fracas is pretty darned good, though!

Another Malle fan here, too. l just received a bottle of Une Rose, & it's truly stunning!

Thank you all for the warm welcome! Makes me wish I'd joined sooner...

Teardrop and TLS: Aren't the Malle fragrances incredible?? Une Rose just blows me away and I don't even like rose fragrances! I worry now that Estee Lauder is the owner -- not that Lauder don't produce excellent fragrances, but they're pretty ruthless about maximizing profits. If only I had the cash to stock up on Malle before they change something...

I always admired Fracas rather than loved it; I'm really glad the current owners care enough to try to preserve it! I was OK with 90s Diorissimo because they at least made an effort with it, but now... ugh. The cynicism is beyond appalling.

Anyway, I've got my eye on a 1970s Magie Noire parfum up for auction on eBay. I get more comments on that scent than anything I've worn apart from the original Montana (which I would happily wear again if I could only find the first iteration of it...) So weird and wonderful, those two.

adam090273 and hedonist222: Thank you. It's the first time I've listed all the things I've worn with consistency and it's weird to see the same types of scents repeating themselves... I have a very narrow range of fragrance preferences!

Welcome. I think mostly we gravitate to a specific scent profile, we all have our favourites. Basenotes is very good for learning of new things to try, both new products and others that have been around for many years right under our noses, so to speak.

I’m really enjoying people’s takes on fragrances I’ve worn and fragrances I’ve neglected! All these new trains of thoughts on top of news of the new…

Hi! Joy perfume is hugely important to me -- it was the scent my father always gave to my mother -- so I'm very happy to meet a member with that name!
