Default Oud scents that actually smell good -

    Hey guys,

Not a big fan of Oud scents partly because, for me, since I like compliments, I never get any with this one especially from my wife....

The ONLY one my wife really likes on me is Oud from MFK....THe dirty, rooty kind of oud scents doesn't wear well down here in the Florida heat and can become very cloying....The ADP Colonia Intense Oud is a prime example of Oud scents that simply stink to me...Most of the Montales are pretty bad too. The Tom Ford Oud scents (i.e. Our Wood) don't do too well and what I'm finding is that the Oud scents to me that I love and actually smell good are Oud scents that are mixed with something like Saffron or other notes....Somehow these mixtures seem to take the harshness out of straight Oud notes and actually make it wearable...

Are there any out there that you guys might recommend that you have had good luck with?

Oud Alif by Shay and Blue is a nice oud with prominent saffron. Heart notes feature a dark chocolate with a nice leather base. Only issue would be how it performs in your location. Worth your while checking this one out.

Edit: I think hednic found this one a little hard to come by in the states.

Yes I have ordered fragrance before from Shay and Blue...I believe it was Sicilian Lime and I had to pay exuberant amounts of money for shipping....It's a great house, though, and certainly would love to smell this one....

Many, but I'll suggest a recent one I just got - Oud Saphir by Atelier Cologne. The oud is pretty subdued in this one and blended well and pretty evenly with the other notes.

In terms of oud fragrances that actually get compliments ill go with oud wood from tom ford or ragbah by lataffah? Not sure how you spell. I think in general if you want general complments with a fragrance that has a lot of oud you are gonna be in some trouble. Theres just to much stank to it in general to big unsolicited compliment getters. But the 2 ive mentioned ive had positive feed back on. Subsequently of course neither have a strong oud smell. Although oud wood deff has a cumin sortaish stank to it for sure imo.

You could try by kilians amber oud as well. Compliments have been mixed for me on it, but any oud in that one is minute at best. And if anything I think the bay leaf/herbal note is what smells kinda "off" in it. But for what its worth I generally tend to enjoy the smell of that one, expensive as hell though.

agreed...I haven't found a Kilian scent I really like yet so I might have to give this one a whirl...

Well it's an EDC although an absolue. Where I am we haven't experienced excessive heat yet, low eighties with low humidity and it worked like a charm. I know you said you're not so crazy about the note so this might work for you. If you have an opportunity to try it, give it a shot.

Versace Oud Noir has a smokey oud note at the beginning with dark wood and smooth leather to finish.
I swear I smell port wine in it at some point along the way.
Lasts 8 hours on me, then its gone. The first 2 hours are magic.
I have left Basenotes due to excessive childish behavior by community members.

Saudi Arabia is a pretty hot place and they wear oudh. It's everywhere. Some Western oudh fragrance compositions just don't hack it in hot weather.

Maybe head towards attars, where you dab on just a little. Might work out a little better.
Some favorites: Pasha Incense Royale, Chopard (Oud Malaki, Noble Vetiver), Amouage (Epic Man, Tribute), Versace L'Homme (vintage), YSL (M7, Kouros (1st)), Gucci Envy, Gucci Nobile, Hermes (vintage: Bel Ami, Equipage), Chanel (vintage: Antaeus, Pour Monsieur (+CC), Egoiste (+CC)), Tiffany For Men, Estee Lauder Metropolis, Jean-Marc Sinan VO, Guerlain (Heritage, L'Homme Intense, LIDGE), Prada Amber Pour Homme Intense, Etro (Palais Jamais, Gomma, Vetiver, Shaal Nur), Davidoff Zino (1st), Acqua di Parma (Assoluta 2011, Essenza, Intensa Oud), Gianfranco Ferre For Man (1st), Elsha 1776, Balenciaga Ho Hang Club, Calvin Klein Obsession (vintage), Jovoy Private Label, Monsieur Carven, Diptyque (Hesperides, Tam Dao EDP), Byredo (Accord Oud, Baudelaire)
Currently wearing: Epic Man by Amouage

    OP
i have a couple of empty vials, if you paid the shipping from me here in the UK, i can send you a sample of the Shay and Blue Oud Alif, and Chopard Oud Malaki.
the chopard is one of my favourite ouds, i think youd find it more sensual. i LOVE ADP oid concentree, but in the heat its gojng to be extreme, try getting some vanilla frag to layer with it.

    Harrods Agarwood
    New York Oud
Signature Scent (simple to me like MFK Oud)

hands down each and every time I wear either I get tons of compliments. More so with New York Oud it's such contradictory fragrance withe Plum and Saffron.

Well a strong oud note is not likely to garner compliments in Western nations, so it sounds like you want a mild one that you can at least detect. If you like the Habit Rouge idea you can get the EdP, which has a mild oud note, for example.

While "actually smells good" is quite subjective and will vary by person, Oud Shamash (and Oud for Love) by The Different Company and As Sawira by Penhaligon's are good places to start, IMO.

    4)
Anat Fritz Original Formula and Classical (Anat Fritz) - tie
    4) Lalfeorosa (O'driù) - tie

    7) Captain vintage (Molyneux)
    8) Tzora (Anat Fritz)

So, it really sounds like you aren't looking for oud scents, but scents that either are oud in name only, or have it in such small amounts that it will still be fresh/clean/light. Not sure why you are trying to put that square peg in that round hole. Have you tried Bond No. 9 Shelter Island? That seems to be what you may be looking for.
    Current Summer Favorites:

    1. Creed - Original Cologne
    2. Xerjoff - Nio
    3. Creed - Aventus
    4. The Different Company - De Bachmakov
    5. Dior - Homme Sport 2008
    6. Tom Ford - Grey Vetiver
    7. Montale - Aoud Legacy
    8. Dior - Homme Sport 2012
    9. Tom Ford - Rive d'Ambre
    10. Creed - Virgin Island Water
