Default Tom Ford - Neroli Portofino versus Chanel - Platinum Egoiste

Just curious what people think of these two. I appreciate that they're not really in the same area - apart from being suitable for summer.
I'm just interested. Please don't base your answer on pricing. Let's assume you have the money to buy both.

Thanks again. I normally don't like these poll threads so apologies in advance.

    Indeed!

Plus: PE has more uniqueness to it than Neroli Portofino.

I like PE for summer nights, but it's a great all year around. It's one of my go to's when I'm not sure about the occasion etc
NP is also great for any time. Very easy to wear and inoffensive.

I think PE is more "dressy" and NP is like the essence of casual

I love both but they are for very different ocassions. Thus I really can't compare them. I love NP for casual wear and I love PE for formal occasions / events.

I'm with Hednic on this one, the Egoiste is the better fragrance to me.
I buy fragrances that match my personality. I want to smell like I'll whisk you away with me on a weekend retreat to engage in an exciting adventure in parts unknown.

I have a sample of Neroli Portofino. I'll try it again.

My experience has been wearing Platinum Egoiste often, and loving it, and trying Neroli Portofino and thinking it was just ok. Price usually affects my opinion, I can't help it. Fragrances more expensive than Chanel often strike me as silly.

I've owned a bottle of PE in the past, and tried Neroli Portofino this past weekend while I was @ Nordstrom.

And my vote is for Platinum Egoiste. It is a much better value...since it's a better scent, with better performance, at a MUCH better price!

1.7 ounce bottle of Neroli Portofino at Nordstrom = $215

3.4 ounce bottle of Platinum Egoiste at Macy's = $89

This is a case of a name, hype, designer versus niche, and price tag having people thinking that something is "superior" when it is not.

It's a case of people thinking PE smells horrible (or is in my case). I'd wear YSL L'Homme over it all day, every day. Or Cool Water. Or D&G The One. Or damn near any other designer. I think PE smells bad, and is beyond screaming off of my skin. So I have an enormous cloud of bad encircling me every second. We won't even get in to how you can't find it under retail.

Neroli Portofino smells pleasant to me. I don't find it good enough to purchase, but compared to PE? Yeah, lights out winner for me - no contest. Throw NP up against Cool Water and I'd pick Cool Water every day.

    Bang on.

Designer v niche has nothing to do with it whatsoever - I love plenty of designer fragrances and am judging based on smell alone.

Fair enough. I just wasn't impressed with Neroli Portofino at all. Forget that it's priced ridiculous...it was a barely detectable scent that had poor performance to boot. I think if I didn't care for PE, I'd remain neutral rather than throw my hat into the ring for Neroli Portofino. I guess I'd take a bottle of NP if someone gave it to me, because it's not an offensive scent....after all, something actually has to be noticeable to be offensive.

Thanks everyone, who chimed in. It's good to hear other people's thoughts. I know these two fragrances are not an easy comparison. I'm just interested in if you had the money to buy either.

A fair comparison. Everyone's obervations have been on point. My £0.02:

NP is like 4711 that can stretch its legs for a few hours. Citrus which settles to a neroli/white floral smooth slightly creamy base with a comforting glow to it.

PE is (like other workhorses such as TF Grey Vetiver) a sharp and sophisticated wear. Too cool for school is the feel I get. A strong piece that is better appreciated by the fairer sex than NP.

NP for the yacht in the day; PE for blackjack at the casino.
