Default Introducing someone to fragrances - which ten are a must-try?

I have a friend who is getting interested in fragrances since he checked out my collection a few weeks ago. Now he's hooked. He bought his first bottle (Burberry London, after smelling it from my collection) and is asking me about what else he should try. He is also very interested in Green Irish Tweed. However, I've been trying to advise him to test all kinds of stuff to see what he likes. If you were to recommend at least ten easy-to-find, or easily accessible fragrances to a newbie to get them started or get them interested (possibly by going to Sephora, Nordstrom, or any department store to smell or sample them), but you also want them to smell what they'd potentially like and keep them interested in the hobby...what would you pick? Interested to hear your thoughts.

    I'll suggest four:

    Dior Homme
    Bleu De Chanel
    Terre D'Hermes
    Nuit De LHomme

Tom Ford designer line, especially Grey Vetiver
    Chanel Blue and Egoiste

Except for the Lalique I totally agree.

Add some Davidoff or Ralph Lauren into the mix.

For someone who is new to fragrances, I wouldn't advise scents like A Men, I feel they take time appreciate. Fragrances which are easy to like are the ones you should be introducing him to to begin with. And because of the price designer, for now...

    I would go for these:
    -Chanel Allure Homme Sport
    -YSL La Nuit
    -Bleu De Chanel
    -Boss Bottled
    -Pure Malt

And if you could introduce him to 2 niche:
    -Aventus
    -VIW

But remember fragrance is subjective, what one person likes another won't...so sampling and trying as many out as possible is the way to go.

    What a question!

Is he young, young professional, adult or mature? Conservative / uptight or more relaxed? Relaxed, say, like a Californian new age sort-of.guy, or relax as, say a Williamsburg hipster?

    I don't have that information so I can't tell.

If the person asking me would be my age (51), I'd suggest him trying those that were popular when in our 20's. I know it would be fun.

If the person would be a young professional, I would suggest the same ones suggested by Hednic.

And if someone into the history of perfume, I'd suggest the ones capturing the spirit of their time:

    Mouchoir de Monsieur (1904)
    Knize 10 (1924)
    Pour Un Homme (1934)
    Aqua Di Selva (1949)
Tabac (1959) or Chanel Pour Monsieur (1955)
    Habit Rouge (1965) or Guerlain's Vetiver (1961)
    Givenchy Gentleman (1974)
    Kouros (1981)
    Chanel Platinum Egöiste (1993)
Dior Homme (2005) (well, 1 Million I guess would be more pertinent, but I don't like it)
    Blue de Chanel (2010)

As someone who is in a simliar situation to the OP's friend, I find this thread quite interesting!

I see some very nice suggestions, however, I'm not sure about suggesting creed's and tom ford's so early in a fragrance journey. I'm sure most of them are truly great but their price tag seems a bit high for starting out, in my opinion.

From my short experience, I'd suggest Allure Homme Sport and Farenheit.

Oh and I agree with Pollux that age should matter as well, in my case I'm 31 young professional. Any suggestions to expand my collection are welcomed too

At least 10, to get started?

How about seven favorites as an end-goal?

I'd probably start with easy sniffers then something more challenging

Oud: Versace Oud Noir then Montale Dark Oud
Woody/Spicy: Pal Zileri Sartoriale then Costume National Homme
Chypre: Kiton Men then Comme des Garcons 1994 EDP
Vetiver: Guerlain Homme L'eau Boisee then Lubin Itasca
Leather: Acqua di Parma Leather then Hermes Bel Ami
Sandalwood: Chanel Egoiste then Maitre Parfumeur et Gantier Santal Noble
Tea: Gucci Pour Homme II then Costume National Scent Intense
Citrus Aromatic: Lalique White then Gianfranco Ferre Bergamotto Marino
Tobacco: Michael Kors Michael then Chopard Oud Malaki

That should be a pretty good start even though im missing some good notes, but those are some of the scents that really opened my eyes to what smells good yet intriguing.
I have left Basenotes due to excessive childish behavior by community members.
