My Ex-Mother-in-Law is a Shalimar lady and hates florals, fruits, florals in particular, she loves the Summer of Love by Neil Morris. So if you are making up a sample order....

Ok I'll be getting Midnight Tryst, Prowl, Burnt Amber and Mystic Dragon soon. I thought about Summer of Love and Rumi but I decided I wanted to keep it under $25.

Mystic Dragon is also wonderful. On my list to purchase. Gotten compliments while testing samples.

They have arrived! I was a bit surprised to see all four of them are so dark.
I'm wearing Prowl and I'm terrible at describing fragrances, so I will just say that I like it very much! I could imagine getting 30ml (I do not think I find this 50ml-worthy but luckily that won't be an issue if I decide to buy it).
Are the samples parfum or edp?

edit: Just tried Burnt Amber. I highly recommend it to people who like fragrances like Eau d'Italie Bois d'Ombrie, Histoires de Parfums 1740 Marquis de Sade and Dior Leather Oud. I think it is better than Bois d'Ombrie and Leather Oud and it is cheaper ~__~

edit 2: I washed them off and tried Midnight Tryst (wrists) and after about an hour put on Mystic Dragon (elbows). Midnight Tryst is the only one I don't like. People who like vintage perfumes may like it, but I don't really wear pre-1990 perfumes so it isn't my style at all. Mystic Dragon is awesome but you need to love chocolate. The patchouli and smoke (isn't there another version of the list of notes that say pine and incense instead...) are there too. People who like Parfumerie Generale should give Mystic Dragon a try.

After many long months staying on the sidelines, I've officially sampled my first Neil Morris fragrance: Earthtones #5 Tropical Lagoon. I've noticed there's very little information about this scent. There's no fragranctica page or basenotes profile for this scent.

Very cool - I did not know he had done a #5 on that series!

I'm going to use this as an opportunity to plug my favorite BN web page - the one where people can help improve the database:

    http://www.basenotes.net/contribute.php

All you need is the name, house and gender. Anything more is appreciated, but it takes literally seconds to submit a new fragrance.

If you can submit this, let us know how long it takes for a web page to appear. I'm curious how fast it happens.

I submitted pages of Earthtones #5 Tropical Lagoon, Seaflower, and Midnight Shadows.

Does anyone have the notes to Earthtones #5 Tropical Lagoon? I can't find it anywhere online.

Thanks for the submissions! It may be a bit - I just checked my recent submissions, and they're not up yet.

As for Earthtones #5 Tropical Lagoon, I had to dig the notes out of an old Russian blog post!

    Pyramid of the final version:

Top notes of yuzu and mango
    Heart: black coconut and freesia
Base: solar musk, myrtle, sea spray and Madagascan vanilla

    Wonderful find! Thanks for sharing!

I noticed that some these scents aren't listed in the Neil Morris website. Were some of these limited edition and/or discontinued? Here are the names:
    - Earthtones #5 - Tropical Lagoon
    - Midnight Shadows
    - Seaflower

I would tend to think they're still available and that he simply hasn't updated the website. If there is anything bad I can say about Neil, it's simply that he lets the website get out of date. It's a bit like a stopped clock. It's been correct TWICE in my memory! LOL For the most part, it's correct. But always SOMETHING wrong. For instance, I would imagine that one can get a FB of Takashimaya, but his web site still directs the user to the nonexistent Takashimaya NY site.

That's both interesting and odd. I would think he'd keep things organized and up to date. When I looked up the names of the scent, these fragrances had release dates that were a couple of years ago.

Phantom Rain still isn't on the site either, & that was released last year. I would not have known about it had l not been kindly sent a sample with my order.

N.CAL, l'm curious how you managed to get these samples if they were not available to order on the site? Did they send them with an order?

From what I have gathered over the years, Neil is a very busy guy, and a lot of his business comes through personal interactions, emails, phone calls, and notes on the website (people just grab some samples and add what they want in the comment field at the end). Apparently the website is just a low priority. I only notice because I'm a geek, and I pay attention to stuff like the copyright date on the "About" page.

I got a lot of things that way from him - many before they appeared on the website in the first major update that I remember. I'm happy to see they're still there.

They came with the now completed Tihota + samples pass. The atomizers were near empty by the time they came to me. I think you would've enjoyed smelling these.

Hmmm that makes some sense but the excuse sounds terribly flawed at best, at least that's how I see it. If this excuse is true, then he would have these scents available for purchase? I'm compelled in getting additional samples as I enjoyed the Earthtones #5 Tropical Lagoon and Seaflower quite a bit.

That's what I'm thinking - you can ask for things not showing.

I just got an email recently. Neil has a 15% discount (code: summer) on orders of $70 or more until August 7th, and he is including samples of his new scent, Dreaming California.

I'm gonna have to reconsider a couple of things I cheaped out on before.....

Has anyone ordered a fragrance from Neil Morris that wasn't listed in either his 'signature collection' or 'the vault'? I'm not talking about the custom made fragrances.

Here's my review of Scrumptious (2011) also available in the current Sample of the Day thread.

Neil’s decision over the name of this fragrance was definitely spot on! I will say upfront that this was a very addicting scent for me, I simply couldn’t stop wanting to get whiffs of my wrist every few minutes. I consider Scrumptious to be a bright sweet, fruity, oriental fragrance with very subtle floral notes. The opening revealed bright fruity notes of mandarin orange and pear with a little bit of bergamot. The fruity accord is indeed sweet but I don’t think it’s overly sweet to the point that it’s nauseating. There’s a bit of vanilla present as well laying beneath the fruity accord but it won’t make a dominating appearance until much later. In the heart, the fruity opening calms down a bit while a refreshing green tea note becomes apparent adding a little green to the scent. The green tea note was blended in very well which surprisingly didn’t disrupt the scent. At this point I did pick up traces of floral notes which were likely the jasmine and the rose but they were so muffled into the scent that they could easily be overlooked. The oriental notes of vanilla, which was detected earlier, becomes a bit stronger which is now accompanied by white amber at the base. The best time to wear this would be during the spring and summer months as the scent would benefit from warm weather during either the day or a warm evening. A very friendly comforting scent that I think could easily appeal to people. There’s something special about Scrumptious that simply puts a smile on my face every time I smell it. I think it’s safe to say that this is a winner and a FB purchase could happen. Anyone who wishes to experience a happy comforting scent in the fruity oriental genre, take a look at Scrumptious!

    Here's my review Afire (2007)

I consider Afire to be mainly a citrusy scent with gourmand, oriental, and incense notes supporting it. The opening begins with a not so fresh sparkly citrusy note which in a way reminds me of a orange soft drink. After an hour the citrusy notes mellow out and notes of caramel, cinnamon, and vanilla begin to come through changing the scent into a fruity, spicy, and gourmand scent. After three hours the incense note becomes noticeable. I did not detect a woodsy note in this scent. Aside from the first hour the scent remains quite linear throughout its duration. Longevity is fairly good lasting a good 10 hours while the silage remains decent for the first 2-3 hours before becoming a skin scent for the remaining time. The best time to wear this would be in fall and winter.

Afire does seem rather appropriate for the holiday settings IMO particularly around Thanksgiving (here in the US) and Christmas. I’m reminded of huge family Xmas gatherings that involve the passing of countless dishes at a large dinner in the dining room. This is immediately followed by gift exchanges in the living room with a roaring fire in the fireplace and a Xmas tree that projects aromas as well as the burning of spicy oriental candles.

Finally, I was disappointed with the scent overall. I was expecting a lot more from this fragrance after spending time reading up on Afire prior to wearing it. Initially I was pleased based on how the scent reacted to my skin during the opening. The opening was bright and refreshing and got my attention but that soon came to pass. As I said earlier, the scent becomes quite linear and little development was noticed after the first hour. I had trouble smelling it after the first several hours if I didn’t put my nose close to my wrist. Although I won’t say this is a terrible scent, this is clearly something that isn’t for me.

It's been nearly six months since I submitted new ID profiles of scents from Neil Morris in the Basenotes Directory and nothing has been updated. I find this rather frustrating as I have reviews that can't be added and I Can't update my Wardrobe/Sample list. Is there anything that can be done to update the directory?

Posting about such issues in the Tech forum has worked for me!

Reviving this thread because the lovely mumsy sent me a batch of samples a while back, & l've finally got around to trying them! Here's what l have:

    Chasing Autumn
    Afire
    Fetish
    Leather Garden
    Aegean
    Clear
    Asea
    Zephyr

The last four sound like warm-weather scents to me, & so l may come back to those next year, but l'll definitely do the first four over the coming days.
Others l'd still like to try include October, Dark Season & Gotham. As previously stated, l tend to prefer Neil's darker scents, & these do sound appealing.

Speaking of dark, l've started today with Chasing Autumn.

This opens with a cloud of black pepper, cedar & birch woods, burning leaves, & the scent of damp earth in a deep forest. lt creates a dark & unsettling atmosphere, & instantly l am reminded of that "dull, dark & soundless day in the autumn of the year", which sets the scene for Edgar Allen Poe's Fall of the House of Usher. The fact that it was just that kind of morning here today adds to that creepy & almost sinister feeling. The burning smell intensifies over the first hour, but it's not unpleasantly acrid, it's the scent of woodsmoke mingling with the mist that drifts through the trees in the gathering dusk. At around the three-hour mark, it slowly begins to mellow, with hints of incense & tobacco, but never sweetness. After feeling lost in the immense, dark forest, in the distance l can sense the presence of a cosy cottage lit from within by a blazing fire, & the terror recedes as l make my way towards it...

This one is not listed on Neil's site, but it's worth asking for by email or in a comment on your order. lt's not often that l get such powerful images from a scent, but this truly is an outstanding work of poetry in perfume. lt's calmed down by the seven-hour mark, but l think it'll last a while yet before fading out. lncredible stuff!

I smelled that one. It reminded me of wet pavement after a heavy rain along with the leaves and branches on the wet asphalt with the smell of chimney smoke in the background. I suppose the use of pine and cypress combined with coffee, leather, and amber can make an impression as such.

IMO the scents that aren't listed on his website are much more interesting.
