The Roja Vetiver Extrait is my favorite, easily. Glad to see it is getting some love. Samples can be found at Osswald NYC through their online sample service, $9 for a 1 ml spray I think.

I was wondering when anybody was going to bring up the absence of MPG and Villoresi on this list. Profumum Fumidus is also a great one, as is my current favorite, Oriza de Legrand's Bourbon Vetiver. (Sorry if I've screwed up the name, but it's a fabulous pepperminty vetiver.)

I like several on your list very much (Prada, Givenchy, Sel d' Vetiver, Goutal) but there are also some left off the list that would give an interesting comparison. These being vetivers from Oriza Legrand, Zegna, LesNez Turtle Front or Back, Sammarco Vitrum.

The response has been so great to this thread! Thanks everyone.

I've decided I'm going to expand the game more and try to get some more samples of some of the ones you guys have mentioned. Tensor9 was kind enough to offer two vetivers, and while I certainly don't expect anything like that kindness, they do fit the bill as vetivers I've never tried or really even read much about so I'll include them into the game.

I've looked at multiple vetivers already to add, unfortunately Roja Vetiver I couldn't find anywhere from a place I trusted and it seems Osswald doesn't do the sample service anymore. So while its one I'd gladly add to the list unless someone can link me to a trustworthy place to get a sample I'm not sure what I can do for it. The same goes for LesNez Turtle Front and Back. Because they were limited runs you can't really get any samples of them that I've been able to find. I will look at some of the most popular ones multiple people have said and try to pick those samples up as we go along, there have been a ton of suggestions so far.

Just to reiterate, I own a bottle of Original Vetiver and it was my signature scent for at least a couple years. I think it's a great Vetiver guys. I didn't include it in the game because I've smelled it and this is about the quest to find *THE* Vetiver for me. I will be comparing the ones on the list to it and other vetivers I've smelled in the past too. Who knows, at the end I might just say I had the best one all along. I have no idea how all this will play out.

As far as when I will be getting my samples so we can get this game started, I'm still waiting for my shipping information, as soon as I know something I will update the original post and I'll get started as soon as they arrive.

Wow, Osswald must have just stopped it's sample service - this is most unfortunate news. That service is one of the main reasons why I've purchased a few bottles from them, since it was one of the best ways to properly test their more expensive lines before making a purchase. In the absence of the Osswald service, I don't know where else a sample might be procured.

I will keep updating the original post as I add more samples to the list. Due to the sheer volume of mentions I have already went ahead and purchased a sample of Hermes Vetiver Tonka and added it to the game.

I apologize in advance for not being able to sample every Vetiver mentioned. Some are either extremely hard to find samples of or the cost just won't allow me to since I've already spent quite a bit on these samples. I will try my best however so keep mentioning vetivers .

Alright guys. It all starts tomorrow. I went by Sephoria today and picked up a sample of Tom Ford Grey Vetiver EDT and EDP. Since it will still be a few days (and possibly the beginning of next week) before I receive my samples I thought this would be the best way to start.

Disclaimer: I have smelled both of these fragrances while at Sephoria before, however, I've never even sprayed either on my skin. Use your own judgement if this will somehow taint the game/review for you. I just wanted to get the game started since decantshop still hasn't shipped my order.

Tomorrow I will be wearing Tom Ford Grey Vetiver EDP version. Let the game begin!!

    @Mythrol
    Excellent thread!
I have to say that Vetiver is a difficult note for me, possibly because I find it can smell a bit 'sour', however on the recent Synchronized Friday I joined in with Vetiver Oriental from Serge Lutens and I rather enjoyed it. I think the hint of chocolate (and melange of other notes) helps to smooth it out for me, in fact I like it so much I'm going to spring for a FB soon. I'd like to read your impressions of it, although I think you have quite an undertaking ahead already!
I'm rather intrigued by the Hermes Vetiver Tonka, it sounds wonderful and as I've discovered Tonka in a big way I shall be seeking it out.

It's quite funny that 'difficult' notes can become desirable with time, that's the good thing about explorations in perfumery keeps me open minded and curious

@Buysblind Yep. Sel de Vetiver is one of the decants I have coming in and will definitely be trying.

@La Flâneuse I agree Vetiver has such a range that it can sometimes be a bit much if done incorrectly. The inky black note in Encre Noire might be perceived as bitter or sour by some but to me it's just an amazing earthy Vetiver.

I've seen a couple people mention MPG Route du Vétiver unfortunately I've been unable to find a sample of it on the internet so I fear I won't be able to add it to the game.

In preparation of starting the game tomorrow I wore Encre Noire and Original Vetiver again today. It's probably been 2 months since I've worn OV and man was that stuff good. I've been wearing the Sport version of Encre Noire and after trying the original again today it shocked me just how much stronger the original is. The Sport version is absolutely what you have to wear in the summer but it's no replacement for the original. This stuff is really good. All the vetivers I have coming really have a lot to compete with.

BTW my wife rated both EN and OV 10/10. Said they're too different to choose one over the other but loves them both the same. So that's where she is at the start of the contest.

@NeoXerxes and La Flâneuse Yes I will be giving my wife's opinion for every fragrance. I've already let her smell OV and EN yesterday as a kind of control for her which she rated both 10/10 and too different to choose a winner.

One thing I am very specifically doing is NOT telling her the name or price. She already thinks I spend too much on colognes and will skewer her answers if she knows one is expensive. I already told her I just want her opinion on the actual fragrance, nothing else.

I started the contest today with Tom Ford Grey Vetiver EDP. Yes, I've already gotten my wife's initial opinion on it this morning but I won't spoil anything yet and I want her to smell it again deeper into the dry down. What I will say is her opinions I think will make this game really interesting. I was already really surprised by one comment she made and we are only on the first fragrance.

That's a little tease for you guys before I write my review this evening.

Day #1: Fragrance - Tom Ford Grey Vetiver EDP.
    My Ratings: Scent - 7/10. Overall - 5/10.

I have to be very clear here. I wanted to love this fragrance. I still think the scent is good. The problem on my skin is this fragrance is a skin scent basically throughout the entire dry down. The only times I ever caught a whiff of the scent was whenever I was very active. At those times I thought the cologne smelled really nice and I could see where it got so much of its praise. However in normal settings it just wasn't there. I thought maybe it was an old bottle I got the sample from so I went back and asked them. They actually grabbed a new tester for me and let me try that one. Unfortunately I had the same results. I thought maybe it was me going scent blind to it so I reapplied about 2 hours before I saw my wife this afternoon and she could not smell the scent at all on me. Even when I showed her exactly where I sprayed and she pressed her nose against it she said she could only detect the slightest of scent.

I wore 5 sprays this evening when I went out with my wife and neither of us could smell it unless we got our nose extremely close to it. While this fragrance just won't work on me, I do think the actual scent is good and do think if someone is interested in it they should definitely try it. The problem for me was performance. Maybe Louisiana weather just kills this one.

    My Wife's Rating: Scent 6/10.

Im not going to ask my wife for an overall rating just what she thinks of the scent. She said she had a very hard time smelling it when I was wearing it so I fresh sprayed some for her and she caught me completely off guard with her comment. She said this cologne has something in it that smells like bug spray. Not the entire thing, but something when you put your nose right up against it after first spray she picked that note out. She did say when I would just wave my scent infront of her she thought it smelled alright. Overall she was not impressed and gave it her above rating. She said she wanted something that stood out more and would catch her and this just wasn't it. Not bad, just not anything amazing either. Middle of the road for her.

Finally got some updates on the samples.

Emailed decantshop and they said order was shipping out sometime in the next 24 hours. While I'm disappointed that I ordered on Monday and it's taken an entire work week to get shipped out sometimes that's the way it goes. So my big order of samples will be here middle of next week it seems.

Vetiver Tonka is listed as arriving tomorrow the 12th. So depending what time it arrives I will test it either on Saturday or Sunday. Meaning it will probably be next.

Cartier Vetiver Bleu is listed as arriving Monday. Then there might be a day or two and I should be getting my package and we can hit it hard. In the meantime if people want to keep suggesting vetivers I will keep looking into adding the ones I can.

As a tease for my Tom Ford Grey Vetiver EDT review coming later today I will say I got a comment from someone else about it without me asking. Was it a compliment or a complaint? We'll see in the review.
