But this vintage is more complex, deeper, richer, heavier....it's almost intoxicating.

I wore this in the mid to late-80's (my late-teens, early-20's) and smelling it "again for the first time" just now almost brought a tear to my eye.

IMHO this is a pillar of masculine perfumery, it's absolutely breathtaking. I'm going to cherish this bottle.

    Alan.

IMO still the best fragrant illustration of the word Gentleman. A stroke of genius in 1974, still above the norm in 2016, reformulated or not. Luckily, still available.
Nothing else in the range of affordable perfumes compares to it for singularity and longevity... 42 years and counting!
Worn it since early 80's and it is still my Sunday (read best) whiff.

For uniqueness, I hold it up there with the original Van Clef & Arpels Black, the discontinued Moods by Krizia & Yatagan by Caron and the current Black Calligraphy by Aramis / Estee Lauder.
Great comments promoco, thanks for your response!
    Alan.

Yes, www.checkcosmetic.com tells as well, this is from 1991. If batch codes are still intakt, you can always try to check them with this site or www.checkfresh.com. Not all brands are supported but it's a good start to find out more about the age of a bottle.
Congratulations btw, I would die to test a 25yo batch of this scent!

This one was recommended for me in the 'post a picture' thread. Where does one find such a vintage?

Patchouli with some hair on it. Exceptional juice for sure.

I got mine a couple of years back from an Ebay seller. You might check there for it.

Prices have crept up considerably on this one in recent years. It used to quite inexpensive. Factor in the decline of the Canadian dollar here and it's become prohibitive, in the Fahrenheit range for vintage prices.

If you keep looking though you can still find bargains on this one. And I wouldn't even bother ever buying the modern version, as they're so dissimilar.

Poster Derangedgoose might have a bottle for sale. You can sometimes find vintage minis on eBay if you want to sample. This forum and cf are good for vintage samples as well.

    Greetings fellas,

Do you feel any noticeable difference between Alan's type of bottle (natural spray) and earlier atomized ones? (with g not ml)

I have them both and for my nose, the older one is a bit more pungent, rough, from up close smelling (just because of the gas?) in the air they seem very close! Feeling the same creaminess...

Oh man, how I love this one...my first grown up fragrance when I was 14.

    All the best...

I haven’t tried Givenchy Gentleman with an aerosol spray, but I have with some other fragrances, and your description sounds right. It makes a little difference at first and up close. It’s not a big deal to me, even if I prefer natural sprays.

Yeah just bought a nice vinatge of this and honestly not into it at all. I guess it's the patchouli I smell?

    Mhhhm.

Same dilema with Macassar splash and atomized version. (first edition)

Splash is cleeearly more creamy, atomized being packing a punch in your nose...

One of the better patchouli scents that I've smelled. I find it rather easy to wear.
