    Default Vintage Givenchy Gentleman

    Hi all.

Another vintage just arrived and I thought I'd share it with you as I'm testing it.

As you can see from the photos the bottle is in perfect condition. I surmise that it was kept in the box when not being used.

    Two questions:
    1. I recall reading that this "tall" style of bottle was from a time when the "classic" GG bottle was splash-only, and this was a way to differentiate. Is this true?
    2. This is for André Moreau specifically, but perhaps others might know: The batch code on this is F11407. André, according to your superb website, this would date the bottle to 1981. But, there's a bar code on the box, which (again, according to your site) would date it post-1990.
    Comments?

How does it smell? In a word, stunning. I'm familiar with the current version, and they are similar, no doubt.
But this vintage is more complex, deeper, richer, heavier....it's almost intoxicating.

I wore this in the mid to late-80's (my late-teens, early-20's) and smelling it "again for the first time" just now almost brought a tear to my eye.

IMHO this is a pillar of masculine perfumery, it's absolutely breathtaking. I'm going to cherish this bottle.

    Alan.

    As for #1, I don't understand what you're asking.
I will say that I used to have a 100ml bottle of Monsieur de Givenchy (bought used about three years ago), and it was identical in shape to the one you have there. It came in a box that had a green dot on it as well as a bar code, so it couldn't have been older than 1993-1994 "vintage".

I've never seen a breakdown of the production/batch codes for Givenchy fragrances, but I'd say your bottle is early 90s, simply because it has a bar code but no green dot.

By the way, I also have GG in an aerosol bottle. The pressure is kind of weak, but the juice smells great.

I loved, just loved, Gentleman when it was in the 80's. That, Eau Savage, Paco Rabanne, the original Calvin Klein. Loved all of them and the two Halstons way back then (late 1979, into 1983 or so). Now when I smell them, they are different than what I have pictured in my mind's eye. So much so that I can not bring myself to want to sniff their current versions

Thanks again of your comments RoRo.
What I meant was that the taller bottle, I thought, was less common.......older perhaps. And why have two concurrent styles of bottle?
For Givenchy batch codes (and Guerlain, Chanel, Dior, etc.) I highly recommend André Moreau's site Raiders of the Lost Scent.
It's brilliant, with detailed photos and comments.

You are a very lucky guy ! This is , for me, the absolute masterpiece of men perfumery. Your bottle is a real vintage one ; I see that it's a natural spray. If I remember well, the first bottles of GG were using atomizer , I mean they were pressurized bottles. (I had until few months ago a small 28cc vintage bottle with atomizer).
    Great find !

I have a few iterations of vintage GG (it was cheap and plentiful on Ebay a few years ago) and they are wonderful.

Hi, in this case batch F11xxx means definitely "year 1991". True vintage and nice catch! Congratulations!

IMO still the best fragrant illustration of the word Gentleman. A stroke of genius in 1974, still above the norm in 2016, reformulated or not. Luckily, still available.
Nothing else in the range of affordable perfumes compares to it for singularity and longevity... 42 years and counting!
Worn it since early 80's and it is still my Sunday (read best) whiff.

For uniqueness, I hold it up there with the original Van Clef & Arpels Black, the discontinued Moods by Krizia & Yatagan by Caron and the current Black Calligraphy by Aramis / Estee Lauder.
