Default The Malle Vetiver Extraordinaire Plunge $$$

Running low on my "go to" fragrance, Lalique Encre Noire. Happened to re-sniff Malle's Vetiver Extraordinaire recently and liked it a LOT all over again (had bought it once a while ago, but don't remember the price being high). May have to break down and make the purchase of VE, but want to try Heeley's Vetiver Veritas before doing so, after reading about it here. Also sampled Fiele's Viola Odorata recently, which was surprisingly nice (and affordable). I tend to lean toward the earthiest, darkest vetiver out there (no creamy, powdery, vanilla, nor slightly sweet edge).

There's always the re-puchasing Encre Noire, which is a great deal, but would like to take a slightly different route if possible. Have tried Sycomore, but still leaning toward VE. Any other suggestion? Thanks!

Go with the Malle. You won't regret it.

Sycomore and Vetiver Extraordinaire and very good. A few others that I would recommend are -

    Grey Vetiver
    Vetiver Tonka
    Lubin Le Vetyver
    Guerlain Vetiver

Apparently LesNez (spelling?) makes some nice vetivers but haven't personally tried those.

While there are a few alternatives to the Malle, Sycomore is very unique.

If you like VE I suggest giving Gerlain Vetiver Extreme a shot. I found it to be in a very similar vein as VE. In a blind sniff test my wife chose it over VE too. It's so cheap it's worth a shot if that type of Vetiver is your thing.

If only there was a thread attempting to test a large variety of vetivers and giving reviews on all of them, along with blind sniff testing by his wife. . .man that'd be a good idea.

Thanks for the quick response - just spied the Vetiver comparison review going on, too! Curious if anyone had ever checked out Fiele's Viola Odorata (apparently made in Santa Monica, CA). Probably need to purchase several vetiver samples and get busy (or trek over to the Scent Bar) - appreciate the suggestions.

Certainly Vetiver Extraordinaire would be an excellent choice. Another to possibly get your nose on is Vitrum by Sammarco.

Nothing as fresh as Malle's VE - I have dozens of other vetivers, but this one is the freshest...Go for it b4 they reformulate / ruin it by weakening it...

Between Vetiver Extraordinaire and Vetiver Veritas, the latter is more earthy, dark and bitter. I like both, but prefer Vetiver Veritas, because it stays true to the vetiver roots. VE is grassy green and brighter. The two are quite different so I would sample them. On me, both have average performance, lower than Encre Noire.

Vitrum by Sammarco sounds quite interesting - will purchase a sample and check it out. The rose note is possibly problematic for me, though did enjoy Le Labo's Rose 31 for a short time.I like the darker, earthy and bitter description of VV. Average performance is fine, especially in my work environment.

Malle Vetiver is the "Creme de la creme" vetiver ;-)

Vetiver Extraordinaire is ace, but Vetiver Veritas I've come to respect over time also, it has more than a little in common with Turtle Vetiver Front (read, earthy musty jungle floor Vetiver) Worth seeking out especially as the Turtle Vetiver are all gone.
Well, it's cheaper than therapy... edit: No it's not...

Normally I would suggest trying MPeG Route du Vetiver, but after hearing talk of a reformulation (read: complete re-hash), I suggest VE is your best bet.

Honestly, you can't go wrong with Vetiver Extraordinaire, Vetiver Veritas (as long as you like the raw earthy style), or Encre Noire (which I would re-purchase if I were you since it can be found for $30).

Vetiver Veritas is one of the darkest and earthiest vetivers you'll find nowadays. It's very true to the scent of the actual root, freshly plucked from the ground. It's also 100% natural ingredients. I'm not sure where you're getting rose from -- there is no rose in this scent. Lavender is listed as a note, but honestly, you can't even smell it. You'll just get the earthy vetiver, with just a hint of mint when you first spray it on. It's great stuff.

VE is an exemplary choice but if you like very earthy and sinister MPG Route du Vétiver and Etro's Vetiver are very good too.

Yes. It's absolutely worth it. I happily paid full retail at Barney's, but you can get it for a good price online at Essenza Nobile.

Ironically enough that was one of my biggest issues with VE. The opening would imply it's going to be some harsh earthy Vetiver but the drydown just goes fresh, green leaf, and powdery. I personally find Dior Vetiver just a plain better Vetiver and a number of other ones better fresh vetivers.

I won't quibble -- they both 'open up' very well and yes, the Lubin is very underrated imo

I wouldn't worry about the published rose note at all. I really didn't even notice it. This is a hardcore Vetiver focused composition all the way.
