    Default Something classic, something Italian.......

Traditional in form and structure but possesses timeless feel and appeal. Not stodgy. Stylish, and has citrus in the opening.

    Very classic, very Italian.

Go ahead and type up whatever comes to your mind!

Speaking as an Italian wearing this at the moment (thanks to Johnny, by the way) I'd definitely second this. Genuinely Italian. Either this, something else by Villoresi, or maybe something by Maria Candida Gentile.

Why don't u suggest something as an Italian ....its good to hear from the horses mouth....compared to somebody like me who just has a mental picture of Italian essence / style / smell

Perfect recommendations that only a fellow Italian could come up with! Raw, dirty, sometimes even dishevelled compositions rich in innate, almost accidental elegance. That's my idea of Italian style as well. Herbs, leather, dark woods, damp stuff. Tame posh citrus waters... tourists' stuff.

The Rochas seems very classically French to me. I would add, at least as extras, to the central casting picks already identified: the originals of Ettore Bugatti, Romeo Gigli, Domenico Caraceni....
Possibly a walk-on part for Krizia Moods...
And vintage Tuscany is a skilled imposter...

Coming to my mind on the spot:

    - Lanvin L'Homme & Eclat d'Arpege
    - Salvatore Ferragamo Acqua Essenziale Colonia (Contemporary version of a barbershop one)
    - AdParma Essenza Di Colonia
    - MDCI Invasion Barbare
    - Bvlgari pour Homme
    - Dolce & Gabanna Pour Homme
    - Boucheron Boucheron
    - Creed Green Irish Tweed
    - Dior Eau Sauvage
    - Moschino Forever
    - EDIT: Let's add Maison Martin Margiela At the Barber's
    - One of the OP's absolute favorites : YSL Rive Gauche (If the herbal vibe wasn't too present for me, it'd be a favorite of mine as well...)

were the first ones I've thought of while reading your description. ("Traditional in form and structure but possesses timeless feel and appeal. Not stodgy. Stylish, and has citrus in the opening...Very classic..."). Won't particularly go into the "Italian" thing :P

Speaking of Rive Gauche and "barbershop" like ones, have you tried one I find underrated and overlooked from MFK: Masculin Pluriel? Also has a clear barbershop vibe as well to many ones.

No order there. Hope it can help in any way.

Acqua Di Parma Colonia, Moschino Uomo and Aramis Tuscany from my limited experience. All favourites, though for some reason Uomo only came alive for me now and again

AZZARO pour homme comes to my mind. I have always thought of It as italian style rather than french...

Need some help from Italian basenoters: bought recently on ebay a bottle of Basile Uomo: It's not dark green, It seems It was reformulated. Have you tried the new version? How does it compare to previous one? I quite like It's green sour herbal character. It still seemed like an 80s green fougere too me.
