This is comparing apples and ashtrays. Versace Pour Homme Oud Noir is middling take on rose/oud by way of small chemistry set. By contrast, D&G The One is one of a handful of successful expressions of the perfumer's art since IFRA denatured the olfactory palette. Take heart! In this instance, good taste and a sensible option for an evening in good company are here to be found in the same bottle.

That said, I'd wear The One Gentleman.

D&G The One is better in every way IMO. Not saying Oud Noir is bad - it's a decent scent. But it's not The One.

For a date the best one will always be the one making you feel the best and most confident no matter what others think. That being said your message, and the insecurity it hides, seem to show that you are young so I'd say The One. Much safer and easier to wear, I'd even say younger and doesn't take as much confidence to wear it. Oud Noir is so much better but more different, masculine and darker. In the end it's to find the one that fits with you and your personality the best otherwise even the best scent ever will "look" out of place.

So based on your short post: The One
For me only: Oud Noir All day long. Not even close.
The real answer: Your favorite one.

The One is definitely the safer one for a date. But I personally like Oud Noir much better. The one thing that frustrates me about both is projection, which is almost nonexistent after an hour or two.

A little off topic, but do you know if US boutique houses adhere to that? I'd like to find parfumiers that ignore these regulations and support them as much as I can.

    The One.

I understand comments like "Wear whatever makes you feel more confident" but I disagree. If a guy has self confidence issues, perfume isn't the best way to fix them.

    Here's how I see it:

You want her to like how you look.
You want her to like how you smell.
You'll be funny and charming because you want her to like your personality... right?

Let's talk about smelling good for a date. Go to Fragrantica and look up The One for men. Scroll down to the chart that shows who voted for loves and likes. Notice the part where it says "Total people voted," and then has the option to see the votes by men only or women only, and by age under and over 25?

Female votes for The One are all loves and some likes. Granted, there aren't that many since it's a male fragrance and most of the votes are from men, but the women who voted mostly loved it. And if you scroll down the page, you'll find lots of female reviews.

Now, let's do the same thing for the Versace.

    Female votes are nonexistent.

There's no denying that The One is a female favorite.

I regret not getting my nose on that one when it was still at fragrance counters! Every now and then, I see it show up at Ross, but I'm not a blind buy guy.

Big fan of Oud Noir, but its for my pleasure. I also vote for The One. Lets just hope she sticks around longer than the cologne does. It's quite fleeting.

Versace Oud Noir is one of my favourites but I wouldn't recommend it for a date. It's more of a "for me" or "for someone whos settled down" kind of scent.

I personally dislike D&G The One but a lot of people seem to like it so it gets my vote for a date scent.

I know you're just kidding, so, no worries... but... I feel sorry for guys who actually do believe that. One of the most amazing women I ever dated was allergic to perfume, and that included things like scented soaps and shampoos with chemicals plus the laundry detergent I was using at the time. There's nothing less sexy than when you get a woman in bed and she starts sneezing. Serves me right for washing my sheets, eh? LOL! We only dated for... well, it was a bit less than 2 months... but man oh man, she was a firecracker! And I mean that in the best possible sense. We weren't a match, but she was amazing. AMAZING. Perfume or a woman? I'll choose the woman every time. And I'm not just a guy who buys fragrances. I consider myself an amateur perfumer (side note: making your own fragrances is a lot of fun, but holy moly is it a money pit and a time suck... but it can be pretty rewarding. The best thing ever is when you get a compliment and can say "Thanks. I really appreciate that because it's something I made.")

Like I said, I know you're kidding. I just wanted to say that because it's surprising how often I see comments like "If she doesn't like it, eff her."

I'm sorry to hear that things didn't work out between you two. I'm lucky that my girlfriend willingly puts up with my passion.

You're of course absolutely right and I hope most of us fumeheads can respect the fact that most people may not like what we like.

On some occasions I don't care who I'm offending with my fragrance but on a date, and generally around people I care, it doesn't hurt to go with something easier to like, or if you know their preferences something you know they like.

That being said, my girlfriend likes both Oud Noir and The One. I happen to vastly prefer Oud Noir, hence my comment. Don't let it influence you, OP, I don't want to be held responsible if she runs away
