Default Vintage Ralph Lauren Safari is awesome

This fragrance never gets much love in this forum. So I was skeptical. I received it today and did a wrist test and it is, in my opinion, phenomenal. If this was released as a niche by Creed or TF, people would be all over it. Leather, Lavender, Musk, Sandalwood, Patchouli - fantastic combo and it evolves beautifully. Longevity is only moderate (6 hours on my skin with projection up to 4 hours) but the smell is awesome. I have no idea about the modern version, but I am very pleased with the vintage.

It's a very nice one and underrated IMO. I've smelled the modern version and it still smells quite good, though I didn't skin test it to offer comments on perfomance vs the vintage.

Coincidentally, I recently tried vintage Pasha for the first time recently, and it impressed me as a smoother version of vintage Safari for Men.

I have no idea about the current stuff, but I received a bottle of the vintage juice as a gift around the time of its release, and while I kept it for over a couple decades before giving it away, unfortunately never warmed to it. I still maintain the only really good Polo releases I have sniffed to date are the masterpiece caliber vintage original Polo in particular, and the sadly discontinued excellent smelling Polo Crest.

How can you not love Modern Reserve? I think its the best mens fragrance the house has ever released. Carlos came back 30 years later and nailed it.

As for Safari, I will say the current version is every bit as good as the Cosmair, but falls about an hour or so short in longevity. I get 5-6 out of the current, and 7-8 (with four sprays) of the vintage.

Safari is easily the best one they have in their lineup right now. If it lasted longer, I would be wearing it more often.

A great fragrance it is. Have no idea how the current version is. I love Polo Crest as well. I also love Modern Reserve and have no idea why on earth they'd discontinue their two best fragrances. Geez.
Is the juice worth the squeeze?

Safari is a wonderfully clean and elegant scent.

It's fantastic, and I agree it seems a bit underrated. Probably the best vintage Lauren for me.

Safari is amazing I love it. You are right, if it was Roja Dove Safari with a moronic price tag people would be talking about it like it was "the best barbershop out there"

Nah... He nailed it with the original Polo in 1978, and while he has shown moments of real talent since, he just hasn't been able to recapture the same magic. Modern Reserve was not one of those moments, IMO.

The bottles are identical, you will need to ask for a picture of the sticker at the bottom which should include the word COSMAIR

I love Safari too. Reminds me of a much better take on Jazz by YSL. I think it's one of the best bottles ever made, designer or niche. It screams classy, elegant, sophisticated. Even the current juice is pretty good, still smells a lot like the older stuff from what I can remember. It's the only empty bottle I have kept, and not thrown out, because it's too beautiful to toss.

A solid piece of classic concoction, I've purchased a couple of bottles in the past and tested it back recently nearby an airport duty free. A quite masculine and exotic scent so crisp, spicy, woody, (finally) warm, comforting. I really recommend it if you are in to classic woody-aromatic fragrances.

I agree. It's a very nice fragrance in one of the best bottles of all time. Something I have noticed is that the newer bottles actually have darker liquid than my Cosmair bottle. From what I can tell, the smell of the current formula is fine.

There is a slight reformulation and the modern version is somewhat weaker but it is good stuff. I used to have a dead ringer clone of the original in a giant bottle I wore in college and I got spoiled because I had so much, wearing it frequently until it was gone. Now I settle for the current formula when I want to wear it.

I wore this a lot when it first came out—I was a fan of Polo, Polo Crest and Monogram, so it was a natural that I should take this one up. I like the ascerbic opening with its eucalyptus and bergamot; from there, it goes straight to dry spices, leathery patchouli and manly sweat. No sweetness anywhere and in fact it reminds me quite a bit of a drier, medicinal Givenchy Gentleman, in its vintage form.
Safari is as arid, spicy and masculine as a khaki bush jacket worn all day in the field, back in camp with a pink gin sundowner in its hand. It is hard and handsome, with a loaded bolt action rifle in hand and a day’s stubble on its sunburned face.
In his ongoing attempt to reimagine—in his own image—the last days of the British Empire, Ralph Lauren has created a harshly masculine, modern scent, seen through a sepia-toned lens, with all the retro trappings of the Raj. This recreation may not truly be a pukka sahib, but is still someone to be reckoned with.

One of my favorites back in the day. Was not impressed with the current version, unfortunately.

I'm glad most are finding the current version worthy. I recently purchased 125ml for the price I would have paid for the bottle alone. I did a bottle of it when it first came out, but can't remember what it was like really. This new one is a bit of a mess when first sprayed but develops surprisingly well. And longevity is good as far as I can tell.
