Perhaps our community is too small to really make a dent in anything but the sales of their classics, which is what we're fighting for them to keep in any case... Well I guess I see a reason to continue buying Mitsouko and L'Heure Bleue then.

It will be a while before I can wear anything LVMH comfortably, though.

I don't see it as cynical - it's the truth, their sales will not be affected one bit... And I'm in support of Ulrik - regardless of the opinions of many that I respect, the website was one major reason for me to discover many other Guerlain fragrances...

Same here. I think that LVMH will stand like a brick wall against our softer bullets, and eventually new people will come into the field who know nothing about what happened. Guerlain marketing will continue apace, and I doubt sales will be hurt at all. Such is the nature of a corporatocracy.

I didn't disagree, of course. It's just that truth can sometimes be cynical, unfortunately. LVMH has created a rather ugly situation after all.

I have already written such a letter, in English.

It may have a little more weight than mere outraged Facebook comments which tend to disappear quickly.
Sadly, it has no weight whatsoever, because their reply was as follows:

Why on earth did they invite him to events, give him access to the perfumer, even sent him the recent set of reconstructed classics for review if there was a problem?

This pains me more than it does them, I know. I really, really love Guerlain and have since childhood. I do not intend to smash bottles or give into any other sort of emotional outbursts. I won't allow this negative situation to spoil my enjoyment of my beloved Guerlains (and I suspect it would only make Mr. G feel worse if we did). But for now, my money will go to smaller, non LVMH houses.
I do understand this stance. What about buying vintage? That won't put a penny into the pockets of LVMH.

And to expect anything more would have been extremely naive. Some of you really need to wake up...

If it turns out that LVMH handled this unfairly, the best you (and anyone else) can do is to boycott buying their products in future.

Buying perfume is an irrational gesture to begin with. Mr. G's lovingly constructed website fed into our fantasies. His was a labor of love. That is why it hurts so much.

I've noticed that so far, very few people have made their voices heard on the official LVMH page on facebook.
It needs many more people to voice their opinion on that page.

Tell LVMH on their facebook page that you strongly disapprove of their actions !

Oh, but of course! Am pretty well-stocked on my favorites in various vintages and concentrations, for now. But you read my mind, was thinking maybe a pre-1994 Shalimar extrait is in order anyway.

Buying perfume isn't an irrational gesture - it's a luxury.

I'm well aware that many perfume lovers rely on being fed ridiculous fantasises, to fully enjoy perfumery. But do you know what? Not only do the houses and corporations manipulate and prey on such people, with their marketing tactics, so do many fragrance bloggers (especially those who have covert invested interests).

Until you learnt to detach from what is, essentially, a consumer product, every fragrance industry insider (and wannabe) will continue exploiting such people, which makes you nothing but a tool to them.

From what I can gather here, LVMH didn't create the situation. This sort of scenario has always been on the books regarding the internet and what is/isn't intellectual property. They're just enforcing a law that exists to protect their best interest. Lawyers have created the situation. People who have nothing to do with this particular incident.

Yeah, don't think I'd call it fun but that misguided ire is quite expected though, no? Anticorporatism ideologists usually spare their darlings... Apple, Google, Bookface, eBay, etc. Did I get that right David? Also, you won't hear much railing against their own local officials, elected or not, or specifically, for instance, the French Commercial Court that decided in LVMH's favor back in '08 and enjoined eBay.fr from marketing counterfeit and unauthorized LVMH product. All you'll hear is blather about greed, control, and fear-mongering about squashed consumer rights. btw 2 French appelate courts have since upheld the lower courts decision.

eBay fined by French court over LVMH fakes - 01st July, 2008 - BN News

Good BN thread concerning the above. Note: we've seen nearly 8 years pass since this decision and, surprise surprise, (other than France, which perhaps David might elucidate?) no individual I've ever heard of has been stopped from reselling an unwanted bottle of perfume, whether from an LVMH sub or not.

^Re 'how long before they control eBay USA?'... Will likely never happen, at least not like in France. Good reads for the open-minded:
