Default Do you just wear the scents you love to smell?

It might seem a silly question but I have been trying lots of samplers and have found some scents that I absolutely love - like Lalique Encre Noir or YSL M7 Oud Absolut - but I don't think I've got the (*ahem*) to actually wear them. Other times I love the way a scent smells but for some reason it doesn't make me feel like "me" when I wear it. So:

    • do you just wear when you like the smell of? OR
    • do you only choose the things you like AND which you think suit your personality? OR
    • do you ever wear things that you don't like so much yourself but you know will get compliments from other people?

Can't imagine there are many people who would wear something they don't like, other than if sampling something and thus discovering it's not to their taste.

Think it goes without saying you should like what your wearing, as for what I wear and when, I try to pick a scent I feel comfortable wearing for the given occasion. I would never wear something I don't like no matter what other people think of it.

A combination of the first two (it is difficult not to imagine having at least some minor personal with the fragrances one likes or even enjoys to certain extents of enthusiasm), but if option three can happen as an added bonus, however with the fragrances belonging to the first two categories, even better

I don't wear any fragrance simply because it's likely to elicit compliments. I wear what I like, depending on mood and occasion - but I also sample fragrances several times before deciding whether I fundamentally enjoy them or not, since perception is subject to many variables. There are some scents that I've changed change my mind about over months (even years), so being open to possibility plays a big part in the evolution of my tastes. On days when I feel daring or curious, I might revisit fragrances that I haven't warmed to in the past. For me, it's all part of what keeps the journey sparkling and alive. At times, dissonance or some degree of aversion adds interest and is worth investigating.

Yes. Also, M7 Oud Absolu isn't particularly challenging and I don't think you need to be brave to wear it around people. Personally it's a rather sweet scent that I'd happily wear on dates (or even the office).

Depends on the situation. The more out there fragrances I tend to reserve for wearing around the house or in the case of Encre Noire on a date because my wife loves it.

If I know I'm going to be around people, like at work, I almost exclusively will wear crowd approved scents.

I feel the same way about Chanel Egoiste. Love the smell of it, feels very screechy on my skin.

Most of the time this but I also wear fragrances that I think do not suit my personality that much if at all but I do like the smell/performance of (mostly some sweet or gourmand scent like eg. Joop! Homme, 1 Million, DHI, Jacques Fath, Strictly Private etc.) Those are definitely ''not me'' but are fun to wear now and then.

I wear what I like, as in I wear it for myself. There is one that I own that I'm not totally comfortable wearing, Xeryus Rouge.

Also, I don't exactly love CK Obsession but my girlfriend thinks it's the best thing since sliced bread, so I wear it often for her and not myself.

3 things are a must for me...

    1. I have to like it...
    2. It has to be "women approved" by women I know...
    3. It should be priced properly, and fill a "need-occasion"...

    That's what I wear...

Only time I would spray on something I didn't like is when I disliked it the first time but think I may be able to appreciate it because there was something about it that I found intriguing (or I thought my sensitivity was way off when I first sampled it).

Reckon I'm in the 2nd camp. Having said that however, if I like - holisticly - some scent isn't it also an indication that it suits me at some level? So, 2 and 1 for me

The first one only applies to me. The only exception is if I am forcing myself to wear a composition due to a full skin test for a review (in that case, my thoughts about a given composition don't play a role in my wearing it). Even in that case, scenarios two and three never come into play.
    Current Top Favorites:
    1) Portrait of a Lady original formula (EdP Frédéric Malle)
    2) Giorgio for Men vintage/V.I.P. for Men (Giorgio Beverly Hills)
    3) Dia Man vintage edt (Amouage)
    4)
Anat Fritz Original Formula and Classical (Anat Fritz) - tie
    4) Lalfeorosa (O'driù) - tie

    6)
Les Nombres d'Or Vetyver (Mona di Orio)
    7) Captain vintage (Molyneux)
    8) Tzora (Anat Fritz)
    9) Javanese Patchouli (Zegna) - tie
    9) Monsieur de Givenchy vintage (Givenchy) - tie
    9) Coeur de Vetiver Sacré (L'Artisan) - tie
    9) Polo vintage (Ralph Lauren) - tie

Yes. I don't care how much "others" may like something or think that it suits me.....if I don't feel that it is "ME" or my style...then I don't wear it. (and coincidentally, I really tend to just like the scents that I find DO match my personality and style)

Quote Originally Posted by Cheburashka View Post

No. Don't get me wrong...I like the trifecta....I like to wear things that I like, that matches my personality, AND that gets compliments...but the compliments are least important, and are more like icing on the cake. They are a considering factor when I'm trying out a new scent for the first time....I'll even ask for feedback from close female friends and family, etc., and if I'm getting random, unsolicited positive feedback then that's even better! And it damn well better be "acceptable", if not a compliment getter from the women in my life! But even If I get compliments on something that I don't like and don't feel matches my personality....that isn't as important as wearing something I like that matches my style and personality. For example, Dior Homme Eau for Men got me SEVERAL compliments.....while Sauvage has yet to bring me a single compliment. Yet I personally enjoy Sauvage a lot more than Eau for Men and feel that it is more "me"....so, I've got a bottle of Sauvage, and I sold my bottle of Eau for Men. End of story.

I will ONLY wear something that I like and gain enjoyment from. That being said, there are fragrances that my wife enjoys on me that aren't my favorite, but I like them. So, I'll wear those scents when we are going out or "staying in", because she likes them and that brings me enjoyment.

As for choosing scents based on personality, nah I just go with how I'm feeling that day and it will depend on my schedule. Am I in the office or going to some event, with the wife or without, or just working around the house...all are factors in what fragrance I'll wear that day. My personality isn't affected by my fragrance nor is my fragrance affected by my personality;-)

I only wear what I feel comfortable wearing and what I like. But I do know what you're saying.

There are certain fragrances that I like (and may have even bought), but I don't buy/wear them, either because I can't think of a situation to wear it, or I wouldn't feel comfortable wearing it around people who are important to me, much less others.

These tend to be very strong scents or scents which tend to be rather polarizing. Encre Noire and Bentley Intense are examples.

I wear scents for my own amusement and to help me project a certain image. With that being said, I'd never wear a scent I hated even if it garnered tons of compliments.

Wear what I like and what suits me (hence ended up selling most of the gourmands/vanilla stuff and more and more women's perfumes) and consider the situation. Similar to wearing clothes.

I like the scent of lemon pies. Do I want to smell like one? Absolutely not. It's perfectly OK to be selective with our choice of fragrance. If pleasing other people means more to you then pleasing your own nose, by all means go right ahead and wear that...Aventus.
