Default Above or Under the waist?

    Hello... so...

Yesterday I was at a friend´s house having some beers and snacks, and we ended up (as usual) discussing fragrances...

This time he came with a concept he read somewhere in the web...

The idea is that since perfume obviously evaporates, and that´s what we smell... and evaporation is hot, and hot goes up and cold goes down... if we spray in the usual places, neck, chest ears, hair etc... we end up with the majority of our scent 2-3 feet above us... and, if we instead sprayed our waist, then the majority of our scent would be at nose level from us and the other people we meet... hence, getting more from our fragrances...

    Opinions on this????

Won't dispute the veracity of that, but I am pretty much content with spraying my neck and chest.

I spray my chest and that seems to work well enough.

Experimentation will find out. You are also increasing the distance between nose and source of the perfume, which goes against stronger perception. In fact, spraying legs is often suggested if one wants to avoid too assertive in-your-face projection.

There are times when I wonder about some of the men in the fragrance community.

I'm generally a 3 spray guy. 1 for Interlude Man. 2 for DHI. 4 for something light like Gendarme. But for just about everything else, 3 sprays does the trick. I wear 2 to the chest and 1 to the upper back which also hits the back of my neck. I've gotten more than enough compliments to know that people can smell me. In fact, I'm a firm believer that if I get a compliment from somebody further than an arm's reach away, it means I'm wearing too much.

I'll try not to get too graphic here, but imagine this: You're on a date and it's going really well. You end up in bed together, taking off each other's clothes. And as she takes your pants off, she stops and says "What the...? Are you wearing cologne on your... and did you spray the back of your knees or something?" I can't even imagine how huge of an eye roll you'd get as you try to explain that. Meanwhile, your date is getting dressed to get the heck out of there.

    Be a gentleman.
Wear fragrance as a gentleman would.
There's a huge difference between wanting to smell good and wanting to fill a room.

Wanting to smell good = Dapper.
Wanting to fill a room = Desperate For Attention. "Oh, smell me!!! SMELL ME!!!! Please everybody notice me!!!! SMELL MEEE!!!!!!" ...yikes.

As if I even need to say it...
...Dapper = Charming or even Sexy.
...Desperate = You've got personal issues you really should prioritize working on.

I'm going to say this again because it's important. I usually wear 3 sprays and I get compliments. So, before you start spraying below the waist or wherever else, you might want to stop and ask yourself if there might be another reason you're not getting noticed. Maybe people DO smell your scent all the time but they say nothing. Maybe you're not giving them a reason to say anything.

    Smile.

Nothing is more appealing than a smile. Nothing is sexier. Maybe you're thinking "I don't know... a naked woman is sexier." Picture a naked woman with a smile who is making eye contact with you.

    Smile.
    Make eye contact.

Dress in a way that makes you look good. It doesn't even have to be expensive. I own a bunch of shirts from Kohls that cost me $20 a pop, but they get me compliments from dates. Sweaters from places like Banana Republic and the Gap go on crazy sales every year. They can be cheap and they get compliments so long as you figure out which styles fit you best and look good on you. And that's assuming you have to keep expenses down. Wear nice looking shoes. Again, they don't have to be expensive.

...or, be that guy who walks in a cloud of perfume to announce himself. That's the fragrance equivalent to dressing like this:

That's funny, but there actually was a post on basenotes where a member asked if he'd get better projection by spraying his junk. His junk?

LOL, that gave me a good laugh

I think the logic (about heat rising and starting the fragrance low down) would work fine, if we all walked around naked. Most of us wear clothes and we zip up our fly so, to me, it sounds like you'd be locking all your fragrance inside your pants. We spray to the wrists, which are carried low down and which move, and to the neck and chest, which are open to the air - allowing the fragrance to dissipate.

So I think I'll be sticking to 2 sprays to the top of the chest/neck area, 1 spray on the wrists as an average

To be fair, if you're good looking and naturally sexy then it doesn't matter all that much what you wear or if you smile. Women and men will offer themselves to you all the time for quite selfish reasons, they want intercourse with someone that's good looking. Needless to say this lessens a little once you get older but that can be balanced out by 12 sprays of Leather Oud, which goes well with the new look.

I actually tried the behind the knee thing last week and was presently surprised. The scent had no problem escaping my slacks but was not all in my face.

Interesting concept. Its plausible, afterall, the rancid smells emanating from some peoples feet and shoes have absolutely no problems rising up to nose level. I personally avoid spraying around my neck because most fragrances overwhelm my nose. I spray on my lower belly and calves at times. I can still smell wafts of my fragrances and avoid, sneezing fits and headaches.

My personal opinion is that no scent ever can turn an unattractive man/woman into an attractive one. There is a great deal of delusion going on here. A good scent (used in moderation) can at best underline your charm, your good looks, your personality, and that's it. Nobody will want to have sex with you just because you stink of some perfume, applied on your calves, your "junk" or any other place. On the contrary, they will most likely be repelled by such vulgarity.

Anyway, this is what my experiences have taught me.

I shake my head at those "1, 2, or 3 sprays max" lines... Because each fragrance is different. I have some where 1 spray is enough, or 1 full and 1 short will do. Others require multiple sprays and even still, some need about 5 sprays (3 in the beginning, and then a re-application of 2 later on).

Spraying your chest hair is a good idea for extended longevity and perception. If you spray on your belly or just above your butt, you may find not much projection coming from there until you drop your trousers.
Some favorites: Pasha Incense Royale, Chopard (Oud Malaki, Noble Vetiver), Amouage (Epic Man, Tribute), Versace L'Homme (vintage), YSL (M7, Kouros (1st)), Gucci Envy, Gucci Nobile, Hermes (vintage: Bel Ami, Equipage), Chanel (vintage: Antaeus, Pour Monsieur (+CC), Egoiste (+CC)), Tiffany For Men, Estee Lauder Metropolis, Jean-Marc Sinan VO, Guerlain (Heritage, L'Homme Intense, LIDGE), Serge Lutens Vetiver Oriental, Etro (Palais Jamais, Gomma, Vetiver, Shaal Nur, Patchouly), Davidoff Zino (1st), Acqua di Parma (Assoluta 2011, Essenza, Intensa Oud), Gianfranco Ferre For Man (1st), Elsha 1776, Balenciaga Ho Hang Club, Jovoy Private Label, Monsieur Carven, Diptyque (Hesperides, Tam Dao EDP), Byredo (Accord Oud, Baudelaire)

LOL. Plus, I generally spray my wrists or forearms... so, it seems like I would be achieving the same thing i. e., my wrists are usually below waist level.

Here's something else to think about. Do you wash your pants or your jeans every time you wear them? If you wash your jeans after each wear, you're destroying them, but if you're spraying your calves or back of the knees or wherever (YIKES), your scent will end up in your jeans. That means, unless you wear the same scent every day, your jeans will end up smelling like a mess - and probably downright stinky.

Tried yesterday some knee and belly application and performance IMO was not better... I´ll need however a family member as a test subject since the "personal experience" is subjective...

The "charm lectures" and the "perfume would not make you attractive" one are out of place... (but of course you´re more than welcome to post whatever you want)...

This is a "how to project more" kind of thread...

Why would someone like to project more?

Because he wants to... super simple...

I spray above the waist always. On top of spraying once to the back of my neck, I have recently started applying lower and away from my face.(about 6" under armpits on both sides of my torso) Someone suggested it to help olfactory fatigue and to keep the fragrance from over projecting, and still me able to enjoy it through out the day. Works pretty good!

This. No blood vessels in follicles means that it doesn't cook off the fragrance as quickly as skin. I wear my frags center of chest. How many sprays depends on frag and for that matter, the house (Chanel bottles have high volume sprayers!) The only time I wear frags elsewhere is when I'm testing/sampling and will use backs of hands and sometimes a spot or two on my arms (sampling/testing 4 fragrances is about the limit).
