Default Tommy Lee on: Gender-Specific Scents, Citrus, Gardenia, Gourmands & Kai Perfume

"If it were cool to walk around with gardenia duct-taped to each nostril I would so that I could smell that scent all day long. I could smell that odor of horniness while I went about my business. I'm serious about gardenias. When I've been with women who wear perfume that has a trace of gardenia, I end up spraying it on myself.

The Doctor doesn't believe in gender-specific scents, and neither should you. You are allowed to smell like a flower if you are a man, don't worry. Citrus smells are good too, my students, fresh and clean. If something smells like you can eat it, I'm down. Chocolate, fruit, certain spices - it's all good."(1)

"Tommy Lee, the Mötley Crüe drummer, has been wearing Kai Perfume Oil, a women’s perfume that smells like gardenias, for a decade."(2)

"I love the scent of gardenia and looked forever to find the right perfume but couldn't find one that captured the fruity essence of the flower," Lee says. "So when a friend turned me on to Kai I flipped the f--k out. I like smelling like a gardenia. And trust me, girls don't seem to have a problem with it either."(3)

Gardenia certainly smells good. Too bad true gardenia is not that common in perfumery.

I have to try the Kai oil. Does it smell like real gardenia?

Oh, my. Mr. Lee! Gardenia duct-taped to each nostril . . . . (To riff on Mr. Turin and Ms. Sanchez's bit about Kate Moss in the Guide, I wonder what Tommy Lee can smell, given what he has put in his nose--but let's assume that's in the past).

I haven't smelled Kai Gardenia, but I see it blurbed in the magazines I read at the pedicure salon fairly often. It seems to be something that everyone in Hollywood wears because they really like it, or maybe because there's some endorsement plumping going on--or maybe it is really good. It's the cheapest perfume you can buy at LuckyScent (I think) which makes it still not-cheap.

I am, however, 100% down with Tommy's statements about gender specificity in fragrance. And that is a man who has forgotten more about eyeliner that I'll ever know--and we all know how that has enhanced his love life. Don't be scared of florals.

I'm not repulsed by gardenia by any means but much prefer it on my wife or daughters.

I agree with this thought of preferring the smell of gardenias on a female. I also feel as those there are female fragrances that a male can wear and vice versa.

The only time I think it's a no for me is if the fragrance is widely known as marketed to one sex and the other sex is wearing it. I'm certain there are exceptions to that though. However, I'll give an example. A guy that works for my company wears Spellbound by Victoria's Secret. The first time I noticed it he got into my vehicle and I thought, "he's been hugging up with some lady." Then when he closed the door I realized it was far stronger than what you'd pick up from snuggling. So I asked him and he said he loves it and that's what he wants to wear. Fine. Ok. His smell didn't offend me at all. I just felt confused by it all day. What's he saying here? Do I kick him out of the car or ask him to dinner? Lol!

Maybe the video Tommy was in helps him out in the girl department more than the gardenia.

Even if Tommy sprays himself with a pee spray women still get attracted to him because he's famous and has nothing to lose.

Wow, I guess I shouldn't be surprised that so many would have shot the messenger (i.e. Tommy Lee)...

This is true. Too often what passes for gardenia is jasmine and vice versa.

Florals might be overwhelming for some men, but they should take note that as the fragrance settles (and should the application not be too much), they make for truly unique scents compared to the thin aromatic woody fragrances for men inundating the market today.

There are almost no fragrances marketed towards men with a prominent Gardenia note, but there are a fair bit in the unisex/shared category (which will soon be the dominant share of the perfume market, btw). Offhand, Christopher Sheldrake's Une Voix Noire for Serge Lutens is one I can recall, but mostly because it was made with the American jazz singer Billie Holliday in mind, as she woe gardenias in her hair while performing.

I agree. The only masculine with a prominent gardenia could possibly be Bijan Nude. In the unisex section I've liked Rappelle-Toi by L'Artisan Parfumer, White Musk by Ramon Monegal & Acqua di Colonia Cinquanta by Santa Maria Novella.

    Considering the generally favorable reviews:

HippoPrincess: "A simple and gorgeous white bloom which lends its tropical warmth and creamy fragrance to the wearer's skin. A humid night in Maui in a lush hotel garden."

emt1986: "Island Gardenia arrived today and it is GORGEOUS! It opens a very, very pure gardenia: heady, creamy, warm, sweet, luscious, narcotic, and STRONG. For me, it stays mainly linear, with just a hint of coconut in the drydown."

kbot : "... The price is right, although this does not smell cheap to me at all. Beautiful, classic gardenia fragrance!"

... sure sounds like Tommy's style to me.

Well, its been said many times many ways, but... Everyone is free to wear whatever they like.

Tommy Lee can get away with wearing whatever scent he wants because he's Tommy Lee....which means, he is famous and wealthy, wealthy and famous. He was also married to a very well known babe (Pam Anderson) at one time and they had a famous porn video which made it's rounds in circulation and exposed his rather endowed self. So yeah...if I'm Tommy Lee, have fame, millions and millions of dollars, a rep for getting the babes and am well know to be well endowed...maybe I'd wear something that might be a little off putting or questionable to others and not give a rat's about it myself.

Thanks for the ambiance music for this thread! Here's my contribution:

Meanwhile, we've been discussing mostly about gardenia, but I found Tommy's view on gourmands just as revealing as he said: "If something smells like you can eat it, I'm down. Chocolate, fruit, certain spices - it's all good."

So considering those ingredients (and gardenia too); Black Orchid by Tom Ford is one of the only fragrances with most of Tommy's favorites notes!

I like how people seem to think that him being rich, famous and supposedly (I'll have to take your word for it) well endowed is getting him all the attention of well educated, attractive and classy ladies. How shallow do you think women are? It could easily just be the smell of his gardenia perfume.

Why is he even rich? His band sucked and surely nobody would buy the records. Did he do something else?

Who said anything about "well educated and classy ladies"?

Not only are you incredibly naive Rüssel, but you are woefully ill-informed as well.

I just Googled "How many albums did Motley Crue sell", and the first result that popped up said:

Motley Crue has sold more than 80 million albums since hitting the road in 1981, but drummer Tommy Lee said, "Everything must come to an end."Jan 28, 2014

And that doesn't even include the amount of money made on concerts, other appearances and the sale of merchandise, etc. Maybe it would be a good idea for you to just stick to topics and the things that you know about.

No, I didn't notice any sarcasm (EDIT: and judging from Rüssel's comment below, I now don't feel that any apology for misunderstanding was needed, and believe that I was correct in my initial assessment). After all, I was taking his words at face value....and simply pointing out how many albums they've sold as a response to the "surely nobody would buy the records" (EDIT: and now his "listening to Motley Crue is just plain wrong") comment.

And Rüssel...I didn't use the words "uneducated, unattractive and tacky ladies" and never implied that those were the type women that Tommy Lee or anybody else hoped to attract...so please don't put words in my mouth or imply things that I never said.

I guess if people wish to attract uneducated, unattractive and tacky ladies they could listen to what Mr Lee has stated and try to do so with gardenia perfume and/or by getting rich and famous and being well endowed. To listen to Motely Crue is just plain wrong though and I sincerely hope that most of these albums were sold in the USA.
