    Default Bug repellent perfume

Other member was asking about perfume for fishing that is also a good bug repellent (seriously or not) and there was some mention about patchouli as such.

So, what kind of perfumes would work like one? What oils should be in them? Wouldn't Farmacia SS Patchouli Indoseniano be a perfect choice if patchouli works great?

Usually at summertime I have been an absolute magnet for all kinds of flying bugs wanting to suck me dry from my precious blood. Few days ago when I was out with my wife and kids, they were complaining about bugs and got few bites. I did not notice anything around me. I wore a bit too much Lyric Man that day.

Might be that it was just a coincidence, but I really think it was something in my perfume that kept the bugs away. Have to wear Lyric Man again some day. No idea what ingredient might have possibly been the cause for this.

What perfumes might work? And what perfumes may do the opposite, attract bugs?

Shalimar Edp has a bug spray smell coming from the mothball like civet coupled with the incense. Usually civet has a animalic muskyness scent but not in shalimar, it smells stale and acrid in a mothball way. Though I have no idea if you could actually use it in a greenhouse say to kill bugs. lol

Lemon eucalyptus essential oil is said to be as affective as deet, per the CDC. I'm sure there are several websites offering natural bug repellent recipes that can present offerings with this oil.

Lavender is often advertised and sold as natural insect repellent. I remember one spring there were so many mosquitoes that stores and pharmacies actually ran out of Off and other repellents. And we had a garden party on countryside. We brought some bottles of lavender oil, doused ourselves and kids. It somewhat worked, but only for a short time, because the oil did not last on skin. I don't remember what oil it was, how "natural", how much lavender... But I guess it's worth a try. Pour Un Homme?

I think L'Eau d'Issey Pour Homme smells like bug spray. I've never tried wearing for that purpose (because I do not like it at all), but I would imagine it would keep the mosquitos away pretty well!

There was a researcher-funded study a while back saying that Victoria's Secret Bombshell is just as effective as DEET when it comes to repelling mosquitos.

    I kid you not.
It's really quite pleasant, except for the smell (...)

I'm going to twist this thread a little. I've tried most of the major 'natural' insect repellents (a couple of unfortunate experiences of bottles of DEET losing their caps in your bag does that). The best I've found - and in my experience it repels all flying insects, not just mosquitoes - is Nordic Summer. So, it's not a perfume, per se, but it does have a strong smell that, luckily, I and my girlfriend both like but many of my female colleagues in the past have (loudly) hated. If you don't mind smoke and pine tar I recommend getting hold of it. It comes in a tin and has a consistency like shoe polish.

Always happy to trade most samples I have for anything on my test list.

Tommy T smells quite a bit like Off.
But it didn't seem to have any effect on bugs.
