Default USPS and UPS would not ship my one bottle of cologne!

**The title of the thread should, obviously, say "would not".

Hey guys, do you have this problem as well? I went to USPS first and he asked if I was shipping anything hazardous like "perfume". I said yes, it is cologne. He said he cannot take it. I asked him how it is possible I get packages of cologne all the time via USPS. He looked puzzled and said that it was illegal unless you had a license. Went to UPS and they told me they can't ship it either. Unreal, guys.

I have never had a problem, but I do not ship a lot of perfume, and if I do, I do not tell USPS there is perfume in the package. Insofar as I understand it, USPS ships it, but if it is known to be perfume, it must travel via ground.

Try a different USPS office and see if you have better luck.

It can be shipped but it has to go ground.. Ask for a supervisor and tell them to check the DMM

Ha, a different USPS across town said it is no problem shipping ground and that the person at the other USPS is uninformed.

    That's typical of the USPS!

Agreed. I have had at least fifteen different postmen in the last three years. Service has been abysmal with all but one of them. I often get other people's post in my box, and my post sometimes goes to a neighbour's house. Sometimes package tracking will show that a package is "out for delivery," but it does not arrive until the following day. UPS is not really any better. I prefer FedEx over the other two, but none of them is truly outstanding.

You simply say no when they ask you if there's anything hazardous or perfume inside. A lot of us ship 2-day priority (small flat rate box) & never had any problems. But i wouldn't go to the post office you went to the first time as you're on their radar now. lol

I had never shipped cologne before so the question caught me by surprise. UPS wouldn't even ship it. I wonder when the last time a 4 oz bottle of cologne blew up an airplane? And why can we take cologne on a plane with us when we are passengers?

Because it's stored in the cargo hold area & they're afraid it would act as an accelerant if a fire started. Carry on luggage is a different story.

Do we have any precedents of a fire started on a cargo plane because of a properly packed 3.4 bottle of cologne?

    Not that I am aware.

One other thought is that you might use your post office's Self Service Kiosk. A perfume was shipped to me today by a seller who used the Kiosk. It was shipped First Class mail which I believe still travels via aeroplane.

I think not revealing that it is a fragrance and then asking specifically for ground shipped is the way to go IMO.

This is still crazy to me that I almost always get fragrance first class mail. I however always ship ground as I really dont want to risk losing it and having to pay the person back.

Yesterday I went to the same post office I always go to, and I even admitted that it was fragrance. Lady told me she can't ship it ground either, which I have done several times at that exact post office. I will try a different post office as their website clearly states that they can ship it via ground. She said some BS about it being San Diego, even though I only live 8 hours north of San Diego

I wonder how many people/companies are getting caught? do they actually x-ray machines or confiscate/fine people?

I ship via ground too. A few extra days in transit for something that could be used for years, well worth the piece of mind for me.

Packages zoom through the sorting facilities so fast no one has time to randomly select packages for x-ray. The whole hazardous liquid has gotten out of control.

After a thorough reading of USPS Publication 52 (Hazardous, Restricted, and Perishable Mail), I'd put fragrances in the "Above 20° F (–7° C) but not more than 73° F (23° C)" USPS category, given that alcohol's flash point is about 62 degrees F (that's for pure ethanol, any concentration less than that has a higher flash point, but let's stick with the most restrictive case).

Given that categorization, Publication 52 states that such items are "Acceptable (with restrictions) for domestic mail via surface transportation only".

So, they should be shippable via ground. That doesn't mean that every postal employee is going to fully understand all the regulations, though.

Last I heard from one of the workers was a single bottle that has to be less than 16oz.
