Default New fragrance: John Varvatos Dark Rebel Rider

The launch party for this was yesterday I believe. From the Bloomingdale's site:

Fearless. Sleek. Unconventional. Inspired by the world of motorcycle racing and the iconic black leather jacket, this daring fragrance captures the essence of bad boy attitude and biker cool. The fragrance delivers a punch with a fearless blend of ultra sexy leather, ambery notes and dark woods that makes a statement of bold contrasts and restless energy.

    - Top notes: Bitter Orange Citron, Aldehydes, Saffron, Marjoram, Hyssop
    - Middle notes: Florentine Iris Roots, Osmanthus absolute, Black Violet, Rockrose, Somalian Frankencense Bark, Sumantran Resin, Tolu Balsam
    - Bottom notes: Russian Leather, Cocoa Beam Absolute, Vanilla Extract, Atlas Cedarwood, Patchouli, Tarred Madras Wood
    The perfumer was Rodrigo Flores-Roux.

I got serious Fahrenheit vibes from the original Dark Rebel on paper but never wore it. I have been paying more attention to this house ever since picking up Varvatos Platinum which also featured a frankincense accord that just floored me. He's definitely a designer after my own heart with all the rock n' roll imagery - if the fragrances start going more in this direction I'll be very excited.

No mention of Jamaican Rum, this seems different from the somewhat recently released Dark Rebel. Will test this once I see it. Thanks for pointing this out!

I think I only sniffed Dark Rebel once, but it impressed me. I'll be interested to sniff this, as I am a lifelong motorcyclist. I may simply have to own it - especially if it becomes a discontinued flanker with a reputation and cult status.

Rodrigo is a very talented guy. He does dainty and floral and transparent well, but when he wants to do dark and strong and gnarly, he's totally capable of doing awesome stuff. I like "fearless", and since I thought Dark Rebel was pretty fearless, this should have an extra helping.

Dark Rebel was the only Varvatos that I've tried that I felt was full bottle worthy, but I've only tried the 2 or 3 that the dept. stores carry all the time. I'm curious to try this one.

The note pyramid looks very interesting, particularly the heart. I'd like to see how the perfumer pulls this off. I recently wore something with both Osmanthus and leather and it works surprisingly well. How the very floral heart is going to work with the much darker base could either be a hit or a disaster. Either way, I tend to like Varvatos fragrances as they always seem to go for something different and original. Curious to see how this one turns out...

Yeah, fearless is a good word for Varvatos as a house - from what I can remember Rodrigo Flores-Roux is their house perfumer and it seems like they give him a lot of creative room to work. They've never put out anything that smells cheap, tawdry or mainstream to me.

Yup. Even their most poorly received scent got pretty good marks from some noses I respect.

Wow. I hope I don't like this. The last thing I need is another bottle!

I like most of their fragrances though some of them are quite fleeting. Dark Rebel on the other hand looked like being a step above the rest in the performance departament and it was interesting enough to make it bottle worthy. Looking forward to this release as well.

Yeah, Varvatos does great bottles. The idea of themes on the same distinct bottle has been very strong, IMO.

I have Artisan, but a friend ruined it for me by pointing out a synthetic note in it, and it was like - oh, bummer. I may go back and revisit, but that was the point where my nose was getting too good for a lot of things, and I'd start smelling aromachemicals instead of what was intended. Same thing happened with Aqua Artisan - I can smell one component with terrible clarity, and it's love/hate.

I remember dark rebel changing completely from a glorious opening to a meh dry down. I may have to sample again but what do you guys think of the performance? Is it good?

I get a tom ford extreme vibe from it and its much cheaper so maybe a good alternative for that spot in a wardrobe.

Really nice, especially for a designer scent. Reminds me of an Amouage, but can't figure out which. Someone help me!

Not sure if anyone tried this, but I gave it a try a few days ago at my local Macy's. Kind of smelled like an expensive leather wallet. I really liked it.

Really reminded me of a wearable version of Rien, basically leather, incense but far ahead of other designer fragrances

Saw and tried this one for the first time tonight. I like it! Very nice....much better than the original Dark Rebel, which was more of a neutral to mild thumbs up for me. This one is a really nice scent, but after only an hour, it's kind of a barely detectable skin scent...so performance could be an issue. Thankfully I got a sample vial to give it a more thorough test ride (no pun intended) over the next several days.

It is a far better leathery scent than most of the recent designer releases...performance is a bit on the weaker side though..

    100% agree.
