Default Classic Barbershop Smell without smelling like old man...possible?

    Hello!
I'm new here but have been enjoying the forums for quite a bit. I was on the search of a new signature scent and tried several decants and samples. I find myself gravitating towards more classic/barbershop smells. Unfortunetaly, the ones I like the most are the ones my SO says I smell like old man. I'm in my early forties so perhaps old man is relative

    Dunhill Icon
    AdP Colonia

Any recommendations for something that both of us will enjoy.

My current signature fragrances are Armani Code and Prada Amber Intense.

    Your help is appreciated!

Perhaps your so will change her mind eventually...

There are perfumes that are variously referred to as "nugere" or the like - as in new fougere. Fougere is classic barbershop, so these are modern twists on the genre. There are examples in more expensive niche perfumery, like Invasion barbare or Penhaligon Sartorial. More mainstream, you can check YSL Rive Gauche for men, a fougere that's more clean than the classic examples.

    Hello there!
Rive Gauche by Yves St Laurant is great. Try to snag the vintage striped aluminum can.

Another that I enjoy is woods of Windsor. It has a British Barbershop vibe.

Thanks for all the advice. And so quick!!

YSL Rive Gauche was one of the decants I enjoyed very much. Will need to test drive it again.

I would recommend sampling these: Creed Baie de Genievre and Vetiver 1948. Both have a very classic vibe with a moderately barbershop feel especially the BDG. These are discontinued though but definitely worth trying if there's an opportunity to try it.

I'll add another mention of Rive Gauche. I have the striped can. Great stuff. Very strong. I don't think it's old man.

And, what about good ole Brut Classic The Essence of Man... love it. I imagine somebody might consider this old man, but I think it's great at any age.

YSL Rive Gauche and Penhaligon's Sartorial are both great choices but, in my opinion, Sartorial is the better fragrance.

A few further options could include as well:

    - the Collezione Barbiere line by ADP,

    - Scottish Fine Soaps EDT (the strangest, but oddly well-crafted combination between Givenchy Gentleman, Eau Sauvage and maybe the slight animalic note in Le Male without its even a minimal hint of its gourmand sweetness, as if Le Male was stripped of all its sweetness and combined with the first two classics)

    - The Bluebeard`s Revenge EDT

Consider L'Occitane - L'Occitan, Azzaro pour Homme, Versace - L'Homme and Ferragamo - Essenziale Colonia.

Another to consider if you're looking for a powdery barbershop vibe is PS Fine Cologne by Paul Sebastian. This is available at most fragrance counters. If you sample it and like it, consider purchasing it online because it's much cheaper.

Another to consider is 1818 by Brooks Brothers.

+1 for Sartorial. I love this and wear it often.

Truth be told, the ultimate barbershop scent is Pinaud Clubman. Dated? Maybe. Classic barbershop? 100%! This can be bought at most pharmacies for about $7.

While I would also recommend most of what others have already, I'm curious to find the note breakdown of "old man smell" - kindly share for better recommendations!

I suggest Acqua di Parma's Colonia Essenza. Much more modern than the original Colonia. It smells clean, fresh, and it's long lasting. If you use it as a signature scent I would also recommend the deodorant, shaving balm, and shower gel.

Santos de Cartier has a wonderful barbershop opening with lavender and sandalwood, backed with a rather classic (and classy,) fougére, although sweeter and softer than the average.

It pulls off an old-school "clean" barbershop vibe and a late 70's fougére without going over the top or cornering itself into either, as long as one doesn't go full-on cologne guy.

(Although I sympathize with questioning the idea of an "old man smell" or "dated scent," I also definitely see OP's point – there are strong cultural notions of certain characteristic scent profiles feeling outdated. They evoke the aesthetics of eras that are inherently linked with certain age groups, cultures, etc. Not hat I agree... My oakmoss! Give it BACK, damit!)

Agree on the Rive Gauche recommendations. I had the same concerns about it being too mature for my tastes, so I bought some samples. I have worn it a few times and it's definitely one of my favorites now. I find nothing "old man" about it. It's very clean and refreshing.

Domenico Caraceni 1913 is an Italian-style barbershop, as opposed to British. It's also my favorite in the genre, although perhaps not considered "classic". I wore it in my 20's, but whether or not I smelled older than I should is not something I can qualify. All I know is that I love it and co-workers seem to really enjoy it as well.

I see a gentleman in his 40's easily pulling it off. There is some rose in there, so don't bother if that's not something you're into.

Well, classic barbershop is by definition what some unenlightened folks call "old man smell" - so you won't get one without the other, it's a matter of perception. That's why Sartorial is an excellent suggestion - it's an ironic classic barbershop fougère with a modern ozone note and some other tongue-in-cheek features. Along those line I would suggest Burberry Brit (at least in its original version) and Richard James EdT which both do modern takes on the English grooming tradition. Geo. Trumper's GFT and possible Skye also come to mind and that whole line is a must if you dig barbershop scents (many are "old boy" scents, never old man). Oh, and if do you ever come across Crown Perfumery's Buckingham, buy it just for kicks - Veterans of the First World War have called that an old man scent :-)

Like your moniker, by the way!

This is, in fact, my favorite of the Acqua di Parma line...and one of my favorite fragrances period. Unfortunately, it makes me nauseous. I had to return the bottle. I simply can't wear it.

Thanks for all the recommendations! I stopped by Penhaligon's and tried out Sartorial. I liked it but my wife and I preferred Endymion. However, after a few hours, Sartorial just keeps growing on me. Definitely the barbershop smell....yet it smells remarkably familiar. Incredibly so! I've smelled this before....just can't pinpoint exactly what or where.

Tomorrow I'll be trying Rive Gauche...though it's not the tin can version.
