    ...what would it be?

Just one undeniable fragrance, regardless of brand, year, price, etc.

The oddly shaped, silver bottle known as Comme Des Garcons 2. It's sweet and different from everything else I own.

Green Irish Tweed. Has a classy vibe. Smells natural. It's very versatile, performs well. Perfect 10/10 frag.

These things are always so difficult, so many good fragrances.

In the end, I'd have to give a plug to Knize Ten. It has it all. Citrus, florals, spices, leather, animalic, wood, and amber. I use it year 'round, but not everyone would I guess.

Anyway, that would be the 'one'. I think...

Most likely Armani Eau pour Homme: not just a personal favorite, but (again from a personal viewpoint alone) combines versatility, elegance, manliness, understatement, timelessness, all in one and at once

    Not an easy question...

I'm between Chanel Platinum Egoiste and Azzaro Pour Homme, and here's why.

Both are absolutely timeless and totally masculine, not unisex by any means. The Chanel is a 90's barbershop with a combination of "metallic" and "well groomed" feel to it. This combination makes it a very classy, bright, versatile and kinda "sporty" fragrance. It's welcome anytime, any weather, and with any clothing style as long as you're at least decently dressed (clean and fitting shirt and jeans, and decent shoes)

The Azzaro is another barbershop, but even more masculine because of it's musky base. It's less bright, very classy, more introspective and more serious than Platinum. Again, it shares the "well groomed" feel, but it doesn't have the "sporty" vibe from the Chanel because the musk makes it more sensual and approachable. It's not much less versatile than the Chanel, IMO. A bit more of a nightime fragrance, any weather and just as well dressed.

So yeah, I can't choose one. IMO, these two cover most of the ground for me. Maybe I could give the nod a bit to the Chanel for being a little more versatile, but still not sure...

    1. No, never blind buy (I do, but do as I say, not as I do. I'm taking no responsibility for your fragrance gambling).
    2. Get them both. You're a Basenoter and you know you're going to end up purchasing them both eventually.
    3. Yes, it has been reformulated.
    4. Looking for a signature scent? You've come to the wrong place.

In it's original version, rich with oak moss, Armani Eau pour Homme, mentioned above by Ken, is a fitting answer.

For fragrances in current production: Chanel Egoiste.

They're completely different - I've just put on a bit of each. Egoiste is a formula mostly able to survive the brutal demands of recent ingredient restrictions. This is a 2014 version, and it's quite ok. The initial opening is fantastic.

An older fragrance such as vintage Armani Eau pour Homme can be more layered or textured, and better smelling for longer, based on my experience.

It would be a tie between Bleecker Street and Green Irish Tweed.

I would have said Straight to Heaven, but it's not for everybody because of the boozy gourmand elements. If I had to recommend a single fragrance, it would have to be a crowd pleaser that even those wearing Axe would like - but a niche scent of high quality.

That said, I would pick Aventus. Even the Invictus and Sauvage diehards would appreciate it.
It's really quite pleasant, except for the smell (...)

Check out the SOTD feature, the most worn fragrances listed there include some of the suggestions here.

When you start getting more into sampling, including sample swaps and passes, you'll get a feel for the range of scents available. There are lots of hits and misses to be smelled.

    Ok,

I will say this. Green Irish Tweed by Creed is the most universally accepted fragrance I've smelled and used so far. No one has ever said it is objectionable or negative. I have only ever gotten "good" or better remarks on it. The smell is much like a minty fresh shower soap with very green elements in it. There is virtually no way it will be thought of as 'overpowering', even if over-sprayed. I have over-sprayed this and only gotten compliments.

I will say this about Green Irish Tweed. No one will dislike it, however, virtually no enthusiast I have read will rank it as their "favorite". So, it seems you get a drawback to a universally liked, happy selection. If you want to smell good to 99% of the public with very 'few' objectors (ie, 'weirdos') then go with Green Irish Tweed. It's a 'can't miss' scent that won't offend and is always welcomed.

Personally, my favorite is fragrance is Creed's Spice & Wood. I enjoy that more than any other scent. However, I have not worn it enough to gauge compliments. I am currently waiting for the fall to start using it regularly. I honestly don't know if it will get universal appeal, but my guess would be 'no'. I've had a few people smell it and they didn't want to buy it. GIT they did. But if I'm picking for myself, it's Spice & Wood.

Maybe that will help you. With fragrances, it's a lot like politics. You can be in the middle of the road and everyone will think you're a pleasant enough fellow, but step too far left or right and you'll get some people who will object to you, but others who LOVE you.
