Default Tried the new Zadig & Voltaire This is Him! EXCELLENT

I bought a 50ml bottle of this gem today. A niche quality fragrance for a respected brand for a nice price (50$ for 50 ml).
The scent is smoky, dark and spicy. Starts off with an incense on sweetened sandalwood base; later on it becomes spicy, cardamom-y with vanilla, incense and some fruity patch working together perfectly.
This is Him! reminds of YSL Nu fragrance from early 2000s. It also share some similarities with Opium ph, especially edp.
Could easily become the best designer release of the year. The sillage is close to skin, the longevity is above average.

Thanks! I was waiting for your opinion on this. I might just spill the beans and get a bottle.

I think I'm going to spring for a bottle of this soon. Really enjoy this house.

I'm curious to try that. Their "La Pureté" line was excellent.

First wearing of this today and OP is spot on with their description.
For the quality at the current prices you can find this at, i'm very happy i picked up a bottle.
Definitely reminds me of Opium PH with a little more smoke and less sweet.

Sampled this and thought it had piss poor performance. An edp retooling could be of some interest but I generally dismissed it after a quick sniff as there was nothing in it that particularly caught my attention as it does naught to distinguish itself from the cavalcade of releases there's been around the theme.

The Opium reference however has me intrigued so I'm going to give this another spin next time I'm out and about, thanks.

Really like this fragrance. Would definitely pick up a second bottle (I initially blind bought a small 30ml bottle).

...thought I was the only fan! Buy two (as I did) before they're gonna mess up the next formulation...! (BTW: This is Him has imho nothing to do with Opium pour Homme!)

Smells and performs good and reminds me a bit of Lapidus TL Lui but without the lavender and less sweet.

    Any official US launch plans?

Reason why I ask is because the local rep for BPI USA (Shiseido's fragrance arm in the US, as Shiseido is the brand's fragrance licensee) isn't on the job yet. But as soon as she is (though I fully expect her to push D&G initially), I plan to ask. And I'm a longtime fan of the perfumer's creations.

Tried this a few times, anywhere between a few months and a few weeks ago, liked it quite a bit as a gourmand, good quality as masculine vanillic perfume relatively inexpensive but also good quality for the price

Funny you mention that: both Narciso Rodriguez and Zadig & Voltaire are part of the Shiseido Group fragrance division, as are other popular brands like Issey Miyake, Elie Saab, Alaia, and D&G. At one time, this Paris-based Shiseido division was known as Beaute Prestige International. Interestingly, there's no plans to quit using the Beaute Prestige International USA name for their distribution arm in the United States.

Finally bought This is Him and Just Rock!, too - after having tried samples of each, when they were released.

Just nice fragrances - there are certainly much worse releases out there and as they are now discounted everywhere, I can recommend to give them a try or revisit them as I did.

I thought it was okay, quite surprising actually, I tried it when it was first released.

Yes, I wasn't too impressed when I first tried it.

But I've found my old samples a few days before and sprayed it on - maybe they aged a little bit? - and thought, they both are really nice. I think, Just Rock! is a little bit more likeable and mass appealing, but This is Him is the more interesting scent with that incense note.

They are both rather simplistic and "synthetic" scents but I feel comfortable to wear them.
Maybe it's a good recommendation for all of you, who like the Escentric Molecules fragrances. This is Him seems to has loads of Iso E Super, too.

I'm of the opinion that they're among the better designer fragrances for men of the last five years or so, at least for stuff that usually retails for less than $120. Yes, deceptively simple, with not a lot of notes, and even a bit synthetic, but there is nothing grating or cloying here like there is in so much of modern perfumery aimed at young men. The incense is first-rate, the sandalwood smooth and refined. Even the vanilla, which I usually dislike works well with the other elements. They're on the sweet side but not sickeningly so.

Probably best suited and obviously aimed towards younger guys, but anyone could wear these, and obviously much better in cool to cold weather.

I literally got sick from all the Iso E Super in This Is Him! I had to return the bottle. I really wish they would put warnings on bottles with high concentration of Iso E Super in it.

This Is Him! is pretty solid. A dirty vanilla scent with a bit of a punk rock feeling. Not particularly sweet as these things go and can even wear a bit sour/bitter at times.

There are certainly official restrictions for the highest allowed concentration of Iso E Super and I doubt that Zadig et Voltaire ignored them.
I guess it's clearly under 20% in This is Him and to my nose it's less than in Molecule 01.

Here's an old thread about Iso E Super: http://www.basenotes.net/threads/295...t-Iso-E-Super)

Probably you are sensitive to Iso E Super? It is used in more and more scents nowadays, just as Ambroxan in all the "fresh"/"showergel" scents.
I personally would be happy if it had to be listed on the package if a fragrance contains either of them.

It could be higher than 20% (Fahrenheit is supposedly around 25% and I don't notice it there at all). I assume it's lower than in Encre Noire, also made by Nathalie Lorson, as the Iso-E Super is noticeable. Around 45% of the compund there to give it that woody, fizzy smell.

I'm pretty sure, that nowadays such high doses of Iso E Super like in the original Lalique Encre Noire or Terre d'Hermes are not allowed anymore.
Encre Noire was reformulated a few years ago when they changed the color of the juice dramatically.

If someone knows the current restrictions of Iso E Super in commercial fragrance use, it would be nice to give some detailed information about that.

And today I watched Sebastian's (aka Smelling Great Fragrance Reviews) new Top 20 Designer Fragrances for Fall list and what did I see?

He's definitely paying attention. He released his review on Bois Mysterieux earlier this week, after it had some heavy talk here a week ago.

Oh I'm not saying that he read my post about Zadig & Voltaire here - I was just happy to see that such a well respected reviewer puts it in his top list.
It doesn't get much talk around the reviewers.

I noticed Joy Amin put it on his Top 15 Masculine Fragrances a few weeks ago, a curious list of high end niche and lower cost designers, with Amouage Interlude Man, Antaeus and Kouros alongside This is Him, Bentley for Men Intense, and Dunhill Icon.

    Thanks for the info!
In my books, Dunhill Icon doesn't fit there, but that's certainly a matter of personal taste.
I see why someone who likes Interlude Man could also be happy with This is Him though it doesn't have the quality and richness of Interlude Man.
I would probably throw in Azzaro Visit as another cheapie.
