Wink Caught An SA Lying About a Fragrance?

I was wondering if any of you have caught an SA at a boutique or a department store lying about a fragrance to entice a customer or to simply get someone to purchase something.

I remember one case where one SA discredited the whole Dior Homme line and Hermes line hoping to veer me into purchasing a Kenzo l'eau fragrance. Due to this incident, I was wondering if any people in the fragrance community experienced something similar. I'm just looking to hear some fun and interesting stories about encounters with SAs.

A Creed SA yesterday told me that all batches smell the same and that the different batches signify different packaging. This was in regards to Aventus.

I have had a number of SAs over the years "stretch the truth" from bottle design to house history to scent fabrication - you name it.

A friend and I chatting yesterday said she went into The Perfume Shop UK and asked about First Van Cleef. The SA looked her straight in the face and said it was discontinued. Now friend is not big perfume buyer likes First and a few Balmain.

So I enlightened her on what that actually meant. If an SA tell you its discontinued, 99.9% of the time that means their store no longer sells it, but other stores will. If they insist X smell exactly the same, get a sample take it home and try it for yourself.

Yes but due to lack of knowledge.
Had many discussions with SA's telling them that the vintage tester really smells and performs different than the one they are actually selling and the result can be that a customer tests the vintage and gets really disappointed when using the one he bought! (examples Kouros vtg vs white shouldered bottle being sold; D&G pour homme Made in Italy tester while selling re-reform UK version, Guerlain Vetiver ribbed bottle tester and selling Habit Rouge shaped bottle as of 2010 etc.).

Almost every time I was told the juice inside is exactly the same bla bla........I told them it wasn't etc. Once had a test an DSA opening a white shouldered Kouros to compare it with a metal shouldered tester from 2006 (not even real vintage!). She was so surprised by the big difference on first spray she gave me the (still 70ml full) 2006 Kouros for free as long as we (me and my gf) bought something else for at least €20 which we did.
My Top '11' of main current rotation in no particular order:

    - Paco Rabanne: Pour Homme (vtg)
    - Antaeus (vtg)
    - Azzaro: Pour Homme (vtg)
    - Armani: AdG Profumo
    - Cartier: Santos edt (vtg)
    - Guerlain: Héritage (vtg)
    - Thierry Mugler: A*men
    - SA: Al Basel
    - D&G: Pour Homme (vtg)
    - Mancera: Red Tobacco
    - Mancera: Aoud Vanille

Yes, several times. How did I know they were lying? Their lips were moving.

You know just because people sell things doesn't mean they know anything about what they're selling. I realized this when I got into skincare. People would just push shit without even knowing anything about skincare. The funny thing though is I work in luxury retail and it's not like I know much about the stuff I sell either... for instance when customers ask how a certain product will hold up after usage, what will happen if it gets stained, etc. I start getting a little nervous because guess what, I've never bought a $1,480 handbag and used it long enough to know. I honestly want to tell them they should do some research on the internet because I'm not allowed to tell them anything other than to wipe their shit with a dry, clean cloth for maintenance but I can't...

Plus chances are they just got that job because well, they somehow landed it. I doubt most of the people that work behind fragrance counters are fragrance enthusiasts. Especially when you realize that most of the time, people that buy the stuff aren't either and are just looking for something that will help them attract girls or smell nice.

Of course it happens but not that much. I'd say roughly half the SAs I meet are very knowledgeable and obsessed with fragrance and the other half are just doing their job. I don't mind the latter half expect they never believe me when I say I am looking for an animalistic scent. So roughly half my interactions look like this:

SA: What kind of fragrances do you like?
ElZ: I like aggressive, musky scents.
SA: OK, I think you will like this bright, citrusy, watery thing.
ElZ: Yes, that's a pretty scent, but not really to my taste. I was thinking of something far more animalistic.
SA: OK you will love this delicate woody floral.
ElZ: Hm, yes, not quite what I'm looking for. How do I put this. I like skanky. Really skanky.
SA: Oo la la, you're not skanky! Try this sickly sweet, honey amber!
    ElZ: Wow, okay, thanks.

I'm not sure why this happens so often. I mean, do I have to enter a store looking like a Wildling from Game of Thrones to be taken seriously?

I would guess that those SAs have an opinion of animalistic scents that isn't very positive and don't want to see their customer as that sort of person (OF COURSE there's nothing wrong with those kind of scents. There might be something wrong between the SA's ears.)

LOL! That's actually my experience 90% of the time. Except the SA's always careful to add "It's NEW!" at the end of every sentence.

To be honest, there have been quite a few inaccuracies and/or inconsistencies in the discussions had with several SAs in the past, usually before and after purchases, but even now cannot really tell what exactly was a deliberate lie and what of it far more an involuntary and/or unplanned, random misinformation, omission, inexactness

The worst I've experienced so far has been two SA's from a local Macys on different occasions, in which my vintage hobby came up, telling me in earnest that their training states that perfumes go bad after two years. I had neither the time nor the mouth-working saliva to explain anything to them, as they both immediately denounced the fact that I own a bottle which is nearly three times my age and still smells magnificent.

To me, what's worse than being undereducated about what you're selling, is to say "This is really popular; everyone loves/buys/wants this." That's the fastest way to lose my attention.

Forgive me, but I know what I like and I really don't give a hoot what anyone else likes. I think for myself, thank you, and I find it insulting to imply that I'd let the masses determine what I like.
