Just get Vermeil PH. Almost same.

It’s “Davidoff by Davidoff,” aka “Davidoff Classic,” aka just plain ol’ “Davidoff.” There are a couple of bottle variations depending on where it was made (this bottle was made in West Germany; there’s a taller one that I believe was made in France) and perhaps when, though I haven’t read anything indicating a difference in formulation.

I didn't know this scent created by Yves Rocher in 1990 until I saw it on eBay. To some extent, Samarkande reminds me of Drakkar Noir. First wearing today ; nice but becoming quickly a skin scent.

^^^ Briefly sampled it and yes - instant hit! I love the aesthetic of the bottle design, looks almost like an old lantern, but from an usage point, it's not convenient...Invariably, the ones suggested by Darvant has been hits for me (there are quite a few other basenoters whose recommendations have turned out to be good for me)...

To me it's like New West meets Acqua di Selva but better than that sounds. Also upthread I explained my situation about not having tried Davidoff.

Also blind bought Byblos Uomo, the supposedly original 1993 version.

This was released through Diana de Silva and almost every release of theirs were great masterpieces (from what i have smelled - incl the amazing Ettore Bugatti). Any thoughts from the wise crew here about this fragrance? I already threw the bottle into storage as I'm sort of in-between moving...

I have been thinking about buying this one. From the reviews it is not a safe blind buy. Let us know what you think when you smell it

Well, it has a romantic association for me. My wife bought me a gift set of Grey Flannel because she remembered loving it from when she was young. But, we were both dismayed with the modern stuff, so I hunted down a vintage mini, and she confirmed that was what she remembered. I wanted a spray bottle of the original formula—and this one was under $10. It doesn’t have to be a personal fave at that price.

I have a fairly current bottle (2015) of GF that I bought new. A spray. I used it 3-4 times just to get some air into it and then it sat unused for at least two years macerating. It ended up getting this beautiful ambery golden colour and now smells almost just like my '91 Sanofi version which is pretty darn good.
Haven't tried the stuff that's on the shelves today, though.

Given the dark color of the bottle, I don’t know how I’d know if the color changed. Did you decant it?

If I don’t give away the gift set (which I plan to do), I guess I’ll find out if it gets more like the pre-Sanofi juice. But, since it’s inexpensive stuff either way, that’s just idle curiosity. With my collection, I’m pretty sure 60ml will last as long as I do.

I held the bottle up to a light-source and the juice has a rich greenish yellow mossy tint (giving the darkish coloured glass) which means the juice is a rich golden colour out of the bottle. I extracted some juice from the '15 bottle (pretty hard from a spray) to show what I mean. When it was new, the juice was much lighter/paler in colour and the scent was crass and sharp.
Today, it has mellowed and 'beautified' in all aspects.
