    Default Nose Dominique Ropion

Every time I visit Liberty in London, I can't leave without testing the vast array of Frederic Malle fragrances. I'm particularly drawn to the creations of Nose Ropion and I've promised myself a few bottles in the not so distant future. This led me to research Ropions catalogue not thinking I'd recognise some of his other offerings but was surprised to discover a few.
The much complimented La Nuit de l`Homme which features on many top 10 lists, the boring and quite generic Burberry Brit, the sickly sweet Invictus, the playfully tropical yet synthetic Kenzo Homme night.
What are your most and least favourite offerings from Ropion? My favourite is probably Carnal Flower, with my least being The Night (due to the fecal notes it's unwearable for me before mentioning the price).
Have you also when researching a nose, discovered them to create a fragrance which you've considered to be a great work of art, but been surprised to discover another which you wouldn't bother smelling twice?

Ropion, who I've heard MegaMav appropriately refer to as "The Spice Master" is, in my book, one of the best perfumers around. I adore Jungle L'Éléphant, bought it for the lady, but I wear it more than her. I hesitate to anoint it with the "M-word" but it is a phenomenal fragrance and off the charts unique.

I'd add Oud Malaki to Kaern's list of hits.

    ---edit---

And how could I forget Alien Essence Absolue, which I actually prefer to the original.

My wife went through 2-3 bottles of it ~15 ago, and she got sick of it, never bought another one. Every time I think of it, I offer her to buy a bottle, offer still stands without taking I never thought of wearing it myself! Now that is an idea. hm...

have you tried the latest iteration? any resemblance/difference from the vintage?

I've been carrying on an affair for years with Dominique Ropion (My husband and I have an understanding about this). And we all owe Frederic Malle a huge debt of thanks for turning M. Ropion loose to create some of his most heartstopping stuff in a house where cost is no object, because those perfumes rock.

My great loves of his include
    Ysatis
    Amarige
    (Angel) Innocent
    Une Fleur de Cassie
    Carnal Flower
    Alien
    MyQueen
    Portrait of a Lady
    Mon Musc et Moi
What We Do in Paris is Secret
Poopoo Pidoo (I know--stupid name, great perfume)
    Cross of Asia

And I am super stoked about the new Malle he's doing. I'm a lover of OTT florals, and Ropion knows how to make them sing. But I don't know if he's ever done anything that I'd describe as a classic aldehydic floral, and that's what I hear this will be.

On the other hand, he's also given us Lady Million and La Vie Est Belle--and all its flankers. But overall, I'd say he has been a good boyfriend .
