    Good afternoon all,

I am not sure whether you have heard about this news floating around, about a project that Bill Gates in working on with Firminch, in producing a fragrance that smells like human faeces with the aim of making toilets smell nicer and more inviting in developing countries hit with extreme poverty. My latest Blog post covers the details, in case anyone is interested in reading

    Well...
To be clear, this effort is about masking the stink of toilets that, evidently, are not being used because they are, evidently, too stinky. In the accompanying video to the OP blog, it is said that 2.5 billion of us are not using the toilet daily -- we simply go elsewhere -- it's unsanitary -- people get sick -- and, yes, think of the children, think of the children. The masking is set about by inhibiting the nasal receptors of those close enough to these toilets to get a good whiff. The premise being, of course, that of the 2.5B that don't use the toilet daily, either some or most or all of them would otherwise gladly use the toilet if it were not for the stink and when word gets around that big frag and mr. microsoft collaborated to develop a solution, voila!, they'll start using the toilet (presumably if treated) again.

    Sigh.

This is a rather foolish way of solving a very deep problem. Talk about putting a band-aid on an issue! Bill Gates proves yet again that you can have all the money, and still no logic as to how to actually do wise things with it to help people. *sigh*

I agree with both your sigh's. The reason I blogged about it, was because I thought it was significant that an organisation like Firmenich is getting involved in this type of project and that its interesting in how they are attempting to use fragrance to fix this issue. If I was in Bill Gate's shoes, I would probably, personally speaking, would concentrate on efforts in allowing these children and people to be able to poop in the first place. There is a huge food and clean water shortage issue - an issue big enough to warrant the cash thrown into this project. I mean surely those children are hungry, at the very least. Once these needs are addressed, the demands of being able to poop and have clean toilets would consequently be addressed.
