Default Why do Women Get the Best, Most 'Artful' Looking Bottles?

    Hmm,

This doesn't seem fair for the male fragrance collectors. I've viewed some fragrances on the female side and they have MUCH better looking bottles to collect. Sure, there are some men's fragrances that look great, no doubt, but in terms pure artistic aesthetic and attention to detail, the women's bottles just look WAY better. And in my research on fragrance atomizers, this trend also bears out historically as well.

Now, I'm not saying to make men's bottles feminine looking, but rather to put some more attention to the art on our bottles. Male collectors care just as much about what our collections look like as the ladies.

I recently borrowed an idea of old-school women's atomizers to dress up the display of the classic 4711 fragrance while at the same time giving me the functional ability to atomize the fragrance of the much cheaper 'splash' bottle by buying an old-school atomizer.

I would show some pictures of a few of my upcoming shave kits, but I'm still waiting for some items to arrive in shipping. It won't be long now. Maybe a week or two.

Because perfume is "a women thing"...

On a side note, we have well decorated cans of beer...

Perhaps, at least in part, because it is (mostly erroneously) assumed that fragrance is primarily geared towards them as their main focus group, while men are supposedly not just easier contended with using one aftershave or, at most, one fragrance brand during their entire lives and thus not so focused on design, in fact, preferring more puristic, more streamlined presentations altogether

Well, I am talking about men in terms of being fragrance collectors, not just 'men' in general. hehe. Admittedly, until 8 months ago I was apt to only use the aftershave named Brut. So, obviously I was exposed to some lab accident and gained super powers I didn't ask for.

Market financial consideration? I don't think companies are willing to put as much into bottle design, when they don't think men will pay for it. Woman are used to paying more for all things beyond bare necessities -including fragrances from the same designer ; the femme version of the same scent will cost more. The prices are closer now, but that's usually always been the case.
You notice this changes when it comes to niche-they already know their male market will spend the money and thus don't ignore the bottle design regarding their male vs female marketing.

I think it's as others said. Men were not suposed to use perfume, so nothing conspicuous that might be mistaken for female perfumes. things have changed a bit, and now some male bottles are good looking too (for instance, the latest Ferragamo has a really nice bottle-sadly the content is not).

True, but the industry traditionally has been geared to pleasing the "woman aesthetic."

The atomizer next to the 4711 bottle looks nice. I like the colour coordination. Agreed that bottles used for perfumes marketed to women seem to be given more elaborate designs on the whole but I believe there is something to be said for the simpler lines of packaging aimed at the male market. Mixed in with the well designed bottles there are a lot of tacky ones out there containing perfumes for women. I tend to like bottles with clean lines, like Chanel, which are sleek for both the women's and men's perfumes. In Annick Goutal I personally go for the squared bottles marketed to men better than the rounded, fluted ones geared toward women--even though the juice in both is the same.

Just as a few more examples, the Guerlain bee bottles have been unisex through the decades and they are some of my favourite Guerlain bottles; some other classic bottles for men's perfume have or had original design, like Eau Sauvage, Bel Ami, Patou pour Homme, even the Old Spice container like an antique shaker bottle is very distinctive in an old-fashioned kind of way and think of the quality bottles of some of the Hermès men's fragrances. In my view a display of women's perfumes in competing bottles set out on a shelf or dresser may not necessarily look any better than a grouping of men's perfumes.

I completely aree with you there, it really depends on your idea of aesthetics. I'm a woman, but I think most typical "feminine" style bottles fall firmly in the cheesy-to-ridiculous category. I much prefer clean, minimalist designs, so most of the stuff marketed towards men is more up my street visually.

    I have no idea!

    Sorry - couldn't resist.

Actually, a great question. I think men really need to demand the same fine packaging for fragrances that they do in watch innards.

I concur entirely. That's why I'm drawn to the boxy Chanel and Jo Malone bottles, for example.

I like what you did with the 4711. I also pay attention to the bottle. The male female divide may not be the answer, as in the 'cheesy' cases described above.

I often prefer the sobriety of the masculine/classic bottles. I like the 4711 bottle, for example, as well as bottles like Acqua di Parma and Eau d'Orange Verte. Don't forget we women have to deal with the rubbish discussed here:

Oh god yes! Boys, if you think you have it bad with bottle designs, check this thread out. It's hilarious and will make you feel better about the simple square shapes marketed to you

I also prefer Chanel style bottles.

Me, I love plain bottles with good sprayer. Chanel, yes they have it right. I have a number of male fragrances and love the simple easy to use bottles. I have commented many times on the nightmare that was the Donna Karan Signature in the infamous Klingon Phaser bottle. Yes, it look great and arty, but its a f**king nightmare to spray the damn thing. I hate those bulb things, as the rubber rots quite quickly it seems the Prada one is a point commented on so many times.

alien absolute.jpgMost Feminine targeted perfumes I find silly for my aging Masculine hands, but there are some like this I find enchanting. I often pick this bottle and cup it in my hand.

They still get the best fragrances also imo.

Males are still second class citizens in perfume world -- Invictus, Made to Measure, Sauvage .......etc

    Well how cool is THAT!

We had a BN wedding - two members who met here and got married.

How about you? Did you introduce her to BN, or vice versa? Or did you two meet online?

My wife is not at all into online discussion, but she is very into fragrance, and wears it every day.

I don't see myself as an überthin, under age, sexualized waif? I aspire to be a healthy elegant grown up woman!

    Thanks RP.

We met through mutual friends. She was always into fragrances but it was I who introduced her to Basenotes and having seen and exploring my collection she began to take a much greater interest.. She doesn't post a lot but she is always here reading reviews and searching for new scents.

She has gone from hating Kouros to wearing it herself around the house on occasion. I bought her a sample of Coromandel a few years back and she has never looked back.
