Thread: Top 10 Formal

  1. #1

    Default Top 10 Formal

    Thought this might be fun.
What would you consider your top 10 overall for formal occasions?

    Here's mine.....today at least

    Clive Christian no. 1
    Spice and Wood
    Invasion Barbare
    Jubilation XXV
    Bergamot Extrait
    Vetiver Extraordinaire
    1725 Casanova
    Oud Wood
    Enigma (creation e)
    Tuscan Leather

I don't have too many of what I'd consider formal fragrances but these would be them:

    Dior Homme
    Prada Amber Pour Homme
    Invasion Barbare
    Royal Oud
    Eau Sauvage Parfum
    Chanel Pour Monsieur Concentree
    Aqua Vitae Forte
    Aoud Blue Notes
    Equipage Geranium
Narciso Rodriguez for Him Intense EDP

Some of these are even a bit of a stretch (like Royal Oud and Dior Homme) and I don't believe they're that formal. However at least everything on the list can be dressed up easily, and are sometimes difficult to dress down.
My wardrobe is up to date as of 10/09/17, and anything on my "Swap List" is for sale. You set the price and we'll negotiate from there. Inquire within!

This "formal" label is so subjective as I own 3 on your list that I wear completely casually (1725, TL, and Spice and Wood....S&W being the least casual of the 3, but still pretty easy).

But we meet with Invasion Barbare and I would agree with Jubilation (I just don't own it).

I'm not sure about anyone else in this thread, but for me personally, price has nothing to do with whether I evaluate a scent as formal or casual. It's all about its smell; usually, for me, a certain powdery, clean quality, soapy-ness, or an austere, kind of dark, woody aspect and maybe certain styles of leather.

    In no Particular order:

    Creed Spice & Wood
    Xerjoff Richwood
Rasasi La Yuqawam (you could put Tuscan Leather here but I just prefer LY)
    By Kilian Apple Brandy
    Xerjoff Nio
    Diptyque Tam Dao EDP
    Clive Christian 1872
    Creed Original Vetiver
    Creed Santal Imperial
Bond No 9 New York Amber
Roja Dove Vetiver Extrait (can put Grey Vetiver here but performance is far superior with the Roja)

I tried to cover all seasons with this list and reading it over a few times I really like it. I could probably live the rest of my life off of just these easily.

Interestingly. If I asked my wife right now what cologne should I wear to a wedding, she would ask me to wear Dunhill Icon.

Again no particular order, nor niche/designer, currently owned personally or not,
occasionally nor even gender-related exclusiveness (some choices being possibly unisex), namely:

    Armani Eau pour Homme
    Floris No. 89
    Mouchoir de Monsieur
    Penhaligons Blenheim Bouquet
    Penhaligons Sartorial
    Creed BDP
    Knize Ten
Van Cleef & Arpels pour Homme
    Xerjoff XJ 1861 Renaissance
Idole EDP by Lubin (although this mostly interchangeable with Habit Rouge EDP based on personal preferences, since the Guerlain classic seems to work even better in EDP strength, as a serious contender to niche)

I again completely agree. Some of my most worn scents.... Roja Dove Begamot Extrait, Vetiver Extrait, and Clive Christian 1872 to name a few Are, in my opinion, stellar everyday wears, but really shine in a formal setting and polish off a suite and tie Spectacularly.

By no means do I equate formality with the price tag, although by virtue of sheer quality of ingredients, certain "more expensive" fragrances do have a tendency to come across, at least to my nose, a bit more polished and formal.....as well they should.

As a matter of personal opinion I dont consider many of my pricier bottles to be formal at all. I.e. Bergamot 22, Vodka on the Rocks etc.

To the contrary, I feel Less expensive choices like Dior Homme, Habit Rouge, Egoiste, Colonia, etc. really shine on special occasions....they just didn't quite make my personal top 10.
As always with this hobby Your Mileage May Vary

@DandyDude - You should see the ones I left off that almost made the list. I was trying to come up with a reason to squeeze Straight to Heaven Splash of Lemon onto it. Outside of Vetiver Extraordinaire our list could be merged in any way and I would be just as happy.

@Bangkok Hound - That's a nice list too. I strongly agree Colonia Essenza could be dressed up for a formal setting. Your post also reminded me of another that I think is a formal king: Rive Gauche vintage tin can.

    .
Ha! I almost put Vetiver Extrait in place of Extraordinaire LOL! Extrait is my favorite Vetiver for sure but I think Extraordinaire comes across a bit more formal.
That Splash of Lemon is killer isn't it?!
Man I got a couple for you to get your nose on if you haven't already. Tom Ford Vert Des Bois and Formidable Man....these two are really climbing up the rankings for me.

Jubilation XXV is perhaps the most formal fragrance I own and I pretty much only wear that for formal (or dressier) occasions/celebrations.

IMO as long as you keep projection to a minimum, almost any fragrance is suitable for formal occasions. That said there are fragrances with classic and less casual appeal making them easier options for formalwear. Selection may depend on degree of formality: blacktie formal vs boardroom formal? Also consider climate/humidity, indoor/outdoor.

Some of my go to 'formals' ( don't believe in top 10)

    Eau Sauvage Parfum
    Fougere Royale
    Sartorial
    Cuoio Odori
    Cuir Pleine Fleur
    Clive Christian X
    Domenico Caraceni 1913
    Royal Mayfair
    Original Vetiver
    Mediterranean Neroli
    Italian Bergamot
    Invasion Barbare
    Ormonde Woman
    Chanel Sycomore
    Guerlain Mitsouko
    Villoresi Uomo
    Bulgari pour Homme
