    Default New Perfume Guide

Dear Friends, here is some news:

    ************************************

We are marking the 10-year anniversary of the publication of Perfumes: The Guide by Luca Turin and Tania Sanchez (Viking 2008) with a new phase. The book, hailed as a pioneering work on an under-appreciated art and featured on many best-of-the-year lists, still stands as an important cultural phenomenon. It is long overdue for an update.

Therefore, we are working on a new incarnation: a twice-yearly compendium of reviews, fall/winter and spring/summer, including as many of the year’s notable perfumes as can fit. We mean it to be on the table (or in the tablet) of every person in the world with an interest in perfume.

Naturally, we would like to include your perfumes, and we kindly request a sample for review. Any perfume from the last few years is welcome. New launches are especially appreciated.

While it is possible for us to smell these in shops, we prefer to get guaranteed authentic, fresh samples from the firms themselves, so we know we are smelling each scent at its best. Full bottles are always accepted but not necessary: we need only enough to get a few good trials.

    Where to Send

Please mark all samples “Samples - No Commercial Value” and mail to

    PO Box 60022
    15310 Agia Paraskevi
    Greece

We know sending perfume by mail is subject to strict postal requirements, so please check rules with your delivery service. Greece is —for the moment— still in the EU. Samples sent from outside the EU with customs fees owed will not be accepted.

If you find it difficult to post samples from your location by mail or delivery service, please contact us with details and perhaps we will find a solution.

    Contact: mail@perfumestheguide.com
    Phone: +30 69 84 52 49 57
    Skype: lucaturin

We look forward to writing about your perfumes. Please let us know if you have any questions.

    Regards,

    Tania Sanchez
    Luca Turin

    About Us

Luca Turin wrote the first book of critical perfume reviews in 1992, in French, before co-authoring, in English, two editions of Perfumes: The Guide. For 11 years his columns and essays were published in translation in Swiss magazine NZZ Folio, now collected in the original English in the book Folio Columns. His writing has also appeared in The New York Times, Style (now Vogue) Arabia, Women’s Wear Daily, Cosmetic News, Votre Beauté, Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, and several anthologies, for which he has been awarded both the Jasmine Prize and the Prix Jasmin. He is a judge for the annual Art and Olfaction Awards, has lectured at TED, TEDx, Future Fest, and the Smithsonian, and given a course on perfume in Provence. His work on the biophysics of olfaction, still ongoing, is described in his book The Secret of Scent. He is married to Sanchez and lives in Athens.

Tania Sanchez is co-author of Perfumes: The Guide. Her own writing on perfume has been published in Intelligent Life, Psychologies (for which she was awarded the Jasmine Prize), Fashion, Marie Claire, and others. She is married to Turin and lives in Athens.

It's good to see you back, sir. You are "The Guide" for many perfumery houses here in Asia(Seoul in particular). Awesome!

Good news about an updated version -- my original copy is in pretty poor condition now

    Best of luck.
    Who's the publisher?
Could you explain your thinking behind the twice-yearly issue idea? An electronic format makes good sense, but hard copies? I just see problems, e.g. stores not willing/able to carry back issues, trying to locate a particular review quickly across multiple volumes, etc.
    Perhaps I'm misunderstanding...

Twice yearly: nearly 1500 perfumes a year released plus some older ones, every six months seems like a good format
Hard copies: print on demand from Amazon, and we're looking into alternative distribution channels.
Index: good idea, we will keep an online issue index. Thank you.

Sounds like a great plan - and the index will be enormously helpful.

Have you sampled anything from MadHat scents as yet? If not, I'll ping him about the solicitation for samples.

Fantastic! You are providing a much-needed service, with the paucity of reviewers of good taste, good writing style, and extensive historical and scientific knowledge.

and love your writing style. Can't wait for the latest book.

Very happy to have you here, Luca, actively participating in our special community. Even happier that you live in beautiful Athens

Can we pre-order the book yet?
